Rift face pad uncomfortable, CMDR suggestions?

Hello CMDRs,

I just got a Rift today, and its face pad is extremely uncomfortable on my large head. It's tight on my temples and feels like I have sinus pain after a few minutes of wear. I've tried adjusting the straps but have not found relief yet, and I can't play for more than 10 or 15 minutes before my head hurts enough that I need to stop.

Have any CMDRs had a similar issue with the Rift but found a solution?

I'd advise letting the straps out. I play with the straps quite loose - I find that helps a lot. The Rift has never fallen off.

Don't rush - take time to get it adjusted.... once the adjustment is finished, you can slip it on and off just like a baseball cap.

It only just needs to hang on to your head - make sure the rear triangle is comfy, then make sure your looking through the 'sweet spot' in the centre of the lenses.
Finally adjust the front tilt up/down.

I only have a very slight 'rift-face' indent after several hours of using the Rift, and can slip the Rift on with just one hand.

I've been looking at that site, even before I posted here. Glad to hear some positive feedback about VRcover. I might buy the velour pad and do what you do — wear it without the plastic interface. I think the plastic part is just too narrow for my face.

Have you noticed a diference in godrays now that your eyes are closer to the lenses?

Thanks for the reply. I'll keep playing with the straps. But so far I've found that even when the straps are loose, the headset sags down on top of my cheekbones, which becomes painful quickly. Maybe I need a new face. :D

Take your time to find the best fit for your rift. It can be modified a lot and it's worth experimenting.
They advise to place the triangle quite low on the back of your head (where the bones are protruding a bit at the lower end of your skull) and I agree with that. Then use the top strap to bring the Rift in the right position. Let the side straps all out an pull them in just so much that the Rift keeps in place.

Using that method I was able to improve comfort a lot. I had the side straps much too tight at first.
Now even after 3h playtime I only get a very light hint of a "Rift face".

Thanks for the great suggestions, everyone. Good stuff!

I wanted to try a proof of concept before ordering third-party padding, so I removed the Rift's plastic insert and replaced it with the foam earpads — which are very soft and cushy — from my Corsair H1500 headset. The results were a comfortable 45 minutes of bounty hunting. This solution is neither ideal nor permanent, of course. But it gives me a reason to believe that one of the options from VRCover that has thick padding would work for me.

However, even with the H1500 earcups as eye pads, I still feel some uncomfortable pinching from the sides of the Rift's strap. I plan to experiment with makeshift foam inserts there, too, and also tweak the strap's position and tightness as noted above.

I also feel the foam could have been better on the rift not a very nice feel. Have played about with the straps get it feeling comfortable. Then I move the ear phones to where I need them and the headset moves again seems to loosen off when you push them up

Will look into adapting the foam some how. A nice memory foam would be nice

Sounds like you actually need to tighten the top strap so the top of your head takes some of the weight of the Rift.

It takes a bit of balancing - I had the same issues when I first got the Rift and it took a good 10-15 adjustments over the space of several days to get it just so.
Now I can take it off and put it back on with one hand, even if I'm holding both Touch controllers too!

But, you could be right... you wouldn't be the first in here with a weird shaped head! :D

not for rift, but I do second the recommendation for vr cover..
I got one for the vive (memory foam velour washable) and have to say ill not go back to std one..

If you do get from vr cover, the price you see is for 2...but shipping takes a while

I want to get the memory foam velour for the Rift. Oddly, they don't sell it with their custom facial interface, just by itself or as part of a deluxe pack. Did your replacement pad connect directly to the Vive?

Has anyone got a suggestion for the reverse mohican the top strap is wearing into my already thinning (and short) hair? ;)

I really think about shaving all my hairs to be more comfortable with the Rift and been able to remove it and go out without having to reorganize all that mess on my head. Life have some priority, and Rift is now an important part in my life ;)

Correct better to buy the deluxe pack than spend the 49 for the main frame and another 29 for the velour. I ordered that pack has not arrived yet so cannot comment on whether it is worth the price but has to be better than the standard one

Please post back here with your comments when your set arrives. :)

I ordered this microfleece insert from Amazon, which should arrive tomorrow, because of its quick shipping time. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HRGPRAC/ref=ya_st_dp_summary

However, I am getting used to the RIft's default padding, though I definitely would prefer a softer cushion.

Well it finally arrived all the way from Thailand took 3 weeks and at first I was nervous to open it as the box was a little trashed from all that travel but wow what a difference. The frame fits exact like the original and the Velour goes on as velcro simple 2 minute operation and the comfort is 200% better than the original foam. Happy with that purchase 75 dollars for the kit and unfortunately I only intend to use 2 of them but I feel it was worth it the foam was starting to irritate my face. [yesnod]

Nice cleaning cloth came with it for the lenses also.

AH! good tip! I was just browsing to see if anyone else gets huge welts in their face after wearing the rift, so it's good that there seems to be a solution.

The side straps can be quite loose, but the top strap needs to be adjusted correctly to support the Rift, with the triangle on the back kind of low on your head.

You may want to try this. Raise your eyebrows like a surprised look, set the Rift on your brow, and then relax your face. With me, I can feel all the weight on my brow, which isn't much, and the pad barely touches my cheeks. I change how I wear the Rift for longer playing sessions. Of course, it could just be my face.
