I still find the old trick from Elite ][ works wonders.
Look for a panel where opposite edges are moving in different directions. That panel is either the one with the docking port, or the back wall. Either way you now know where the axis of rotation is.
Next align yourself with on that axis. When you work out which side the docking port is on pick a point on that axis about 10km out from the station and fly to that. When you know where the docking port is stop flying at the station, but at a place that gives you room when you get there to turn.
When I get this right I find I have to make almost no corrections to line up with the port. Easy peasy; lemon squeezy.
Speed wise I find I can fly full throttle to just before the turning point. I reduce speed to best turning speed and request docking. Flip back to the front view, and turn onto the station, and make any any adjustments to line myself up.
Like most things in life. It'a all about giving yourself time to react.
