Its very courageous to make a sequel to the masterpiece that is Blade Runner.

Everything from the music, the look, the acting and the dialogue just hits the spot in the original.

To truly appreciate Bladerunner you need to experience it in the cinema, it is one of those films.

Oh boy, they'd better not mess this one up.
My very favorite sci-fi/cyberpunk flick ever, AND in addition - one of the best soundtracks in cinema history IMO. This really needs to be seriously good to live up to my personal expectations :)

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no.

By the way:

No.

Make new movies. Stop rehashing stuff. It hasn't worked with Total Recall, it hasn't worked with Star Trek, it hasn't worked with Star Wars (IMO with both new ones, but you'll see just how dire things are in the coming years). GITS and Blade Runner will be the same. Mark my words. It'll be forgotten in three months.

If GITS means Ghost in the Shell I agree with you. In no way does Scarlets Johansson even remotely resemble Motoko Kusanagi. But I'd be so bold to say the new Star Wars movies are great movies. Star Trek as well. We just need to grow with the movies.
The only issue initially I have with the new Blade Runner movie is Ryan Gosley seems a little misplaced. And Mr Ford is too old haha.

Some movies, like Logan's Run, deserve a remake because the story was good but the execution was terrible.
Blade Runner was a masterpiece they'll never live up to. Either the movie will be a cheap attempt at story telling lost in the movie's attempts to be trendy and relate to our contemporary level of technology and commentary on current events, or it'll be it's own great piece of fiction that will constantly be compared to it's predecessor and won't get a fair shot as it's own movie. Half the reason I moved to Vancouver was to eat noodles in the rain next to neon lights. I can't be the only one who's passed out with this movie on repeat and heard "To bad she won't live..." in their sleep.
It's all about the atmosphere of melancholic slight-dystopia. More important than the story or the acting.

This. As a story, Blade Runner was meh. But the atmosphere and mood was second to none. It was an eye-opener.

I should note that not all reboots are bad. Case in point: GITS-SAC.

When that TV Series was announced, I was ready to hate it. I really was. The first movie was a masterpiece that had etched itself into my brain, not because of the (weak) plot, but because of both the atmosphere, the topic at hand, and the way it was executed. Hearing that they were planning a Series was bad news for me.

But the series managed to not only live up to, but surpass the original movie. It reset the story, it changed the tone, switched from a bleak dystopia to a bright (if troubled) future. It had its own rather intelligent plot. And it featured some of the best soundtrack ever made by Yoko Kanno. It won me over very quickly. But that was because they had a story to tell, and executed it solidly.

Did you eat Memberberries? ;)

New Star Wars: Flat characters with little or non-sensical motivation, weird dialogue (Han + Leia, what a cringe), the bad guy stops going after his objective for no reason, the map plot itself made no sense, oh and you can see planets explode in another star system across the galaxy just by looking up into the sky. Oh and R2 wakes up on his own because

New Star Trek: Terrible music by Copy Artist Michael Giaccino, the engine room is just a beer brewery, Spock is an emotional psychopath instead of a vulkan, and instead of James T. Kirk we essentially get Zap Brannagan in the captain's chair. Oh and everything you know about Trek didn't happen because JJ. Remember Lost? Remember how awesome the ending was? Yeah, that guy.

I agree that Star Wars was at least more fun than Trek, but overall I stand by my opinion: We don't have to "grow with those movies", just like we didn't have to hold the iPhone differently.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Toumal, you have some great points there. I do agree that often times these kinds of remakes/reboots/sequels do fall flat in comparison to the originals. Also it's commendable for filmmakers to be as original as possible.

I'd counter-argue that there are stories out there so timeless, so beloved, and so universal as to practically necessitate retelling and interpretation for new generations. There's a reason why tropes set up in Beowulf and the Odyssey are still rehashed today. To stick to the sci-fi genre, I'd use the example of Forbidden Planet. That's one of my favorite movies of all time. It was was ground-breaking at the time (all digital score, special effects that still hold up today, fantastic look and feel), and yet it was itself just a retelling of Shakespeare's The Tempest. The fact that it was ripping off The Bard didn't make me dislike it. I loved it for telling that story from a new angle.

Yeah, the new Star Wars movies won't live up to the originals in my old eyes, but Force Awakens and Rogue One are a damn sight better than the prequels anyway. Lol. Yeah, the new Star Treks are weird and don't exactly fit with the established lore, but at least they're trying something new. Blade Runner 2049 may will suck, but it's a story (and especially setting) that I think really deserves a retelling for a new generation. The old movies still will exist. Just because we have JJ Trek and Disney Wars doesn't mean we can't also re-watch the classics and enjoy them. For me...I'll be positive and hope for the best. :)

Nicely said Jenner.

Thing is, we have so much love for our favourite movies it can be hard to be tolerant towards sequels that tries to be something new rather than trying to mimic the old.
Our love for something old, blinds us for the new so to speak. But sometimes, the new can be downright . That's undeniable.
But at least we have to be open to the new. In fact, there might even turn out to be good, if we can just see things for what they are.

I've never been a fanatic for both Star Wars or Star Trek. So being open is quite easy for me.
Right now Square Enix is remaking Final Fantasy VII, a game that I love so deeply it's impossible for the remake to pierce through my memories and place itself on top of the original. But I have to be open and objective. Who knows, it might turn out to be amazing. :)
