Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: Grom in 60 Seconds (16th - 22nd December)

Why Cookiehole Why
Imperial Clipper
As it says on the tin.

And the "Best Ship Christening of the Year" Award goes to...:D

No more time available for me today, I'd have liked to go for a last attempt but had the evening booked (early Christmas present for my mother, she had never been to a theatre to see a live show before...real life, priorities and such)

I declare myself out of the competition, but still it's been one hell of a fun ride, good luck to everyone that may still be trying, may your pad be good, your slot free and the belugas away at sea!

Submitted my final entry for the race. I ended up having to sacrifice a little distance in Gone for the ability to actually complete the jump in time. Thanks for the advice, everyone!

And thank you, furrycat, for the... interesting... race. Despite all the many, many, many setbacks, I had a lot of fun, and as always I learned some new skills I didn't know before.

And to those who were able to make that 37.98 LY jump: 07

Che figata (at least that is what the interwebs tell me)

your priorities are correct, take her again tomorrow!

The interwebs told you right, we have more elegant ways of expressing this, but usually "che figata" is the one that delivers [big grin]

She surely would go again tomorrow if she could, you may see someone on tv doing incredible things, but you can't grasp what "talent" really is until you see that someone doing the same things a few meters from you. It costed a little fortune for my limited means to bring the family, but her amazement after seeing in person one of her favourite artists was completely worth it.

Anyway, I couldn't have beaten cookiehole even if I tried the entire day and night, better to leave the task to others for once :p

Where do I start...

Finally I finished the partition copy to the new disk about 10. Then there were issues, of course. I run a dual boot linux windows system that I'd very carefully kept all linux stuff on one physical disk and windows on another. I'm guessing after my free windows 8 -> 10 upgrade that windows decided to change that as once I'd put the windows disk back in unmodified it wouldn't boot...

So I put the failing disk back in, all was well but it was gone 11 and I only had a conda at sinclair that I hadn't managed to get to the jump point in time in. I thought I'll give it one more go. I boost out the slot into CMDR lightspeed in his FDL, cue rebuy for both of us lol. Sorry CMDR o7. I decide to guarantee an entry with a dash back to Shinrarta to grab A7 thrusters, I know my jump range will be compromised but at least it is an entry.

I get back, I do the jump, decide I'll have to self destruct or won't make it back in time as it is now 11:45 ish.

Grab the FAS for the SC run, goes ok, 4 minutes to midnight so self destruct again.

Grab the cobra make it to 25km within the 60 seconds with about 1 minute until midnight. All good :)

Exit game and go to grab screen shots from video capture.

No video capture, strange.

Then I realise that since I had shrunk the partitions ready to copy them there was not enough space left for the capture... so no evidence, except the tens of millions in rebuys :( Look out skimmers ;)

Thanks for organising an awesome race furrycat. My apologies that fate was not with me this evening, but I'll be back :)

As "Grom in 60 Seconds!" concluded, sponsored by the Buckyball Racing Club, this scene was captured outside Sinclair Station:

my remarkable knack of not being able to press the correct button at the correct time coupled with shadowplays inability to function correctly and a general lack of time I haven't managed a complete race entry, thus I will withdraw my joker so i don't potentially take away points from anyone (i doesn't feel right). I have submitted a Grom and an F&F run, just for fun!

i had a blast doing this race, many thanks furrycat. Last nights bump with racer1 was unfortunate but "That's Bucky for ya!" i could have spent another week on this as I have loads of configs i wanted to try. If we could have used Ship Launched Fighters it would have been two weeks!

Might as well post this now, my final entry.

Interesting videos, thanks for posting them!
.
I have learned from this race and comparing what I've been doing against your videos and the big difference is all in the first second or two leaving the pad. I fly with keyboard and mouse but the mouse is for mouse look only (sometimes subsystems targeting and it is perfect for the SRV turret), so I do not get the smooth take-off: I ascend vertically to clear the structures around the pad then try and quickly align with the slot and boost. My Cobra's loadout was the same as yours and in addition I was using FA-off to try and reduce the bleed of speed and I had also completely drained my main fuel tank to save some extra mass, yet the very best run I achieved was 25.0 km. That was why I shifted my Cobra to the Cannonball Run category: it can clear mass lock really quickly, so I have longer in supercruise (though it took a few attempts to get a run where there was not a significant mass-lock from Beluga's, T9s, T7s, Orcas and Asp Explorers coming and going).
.
I still don't get the large variances in distances I was seeing in supercruise, though. My best entry was one where the planet was not exactly at my back but about 45-60 degrees off. I think it's best to start out pointing a bit away from the planet, so you don't lose valuable seconds turning away from it in supercruise, but it feels like there might be a sweet spot somewhere that allows you to just pull away and gain speed quickly. I also note that my best entry was taking a path parallel to the planet's orbit line but I would need many more attempts to determine if that was a coincidence or not.
.
Great racing everyone, whether you managed a time in the end or not, and congratulations to cookiehole for (undoubtedly) winning and thanks to furrycat for staging the race! 07

So I guess it's over then. Thanks to furrycat for running such an interesting race, congratulations to everyone who perservered in the face of adversity and commiserations to those who didn't manage to finish (I'm especially thinking of racer1 here - that's a heartbreaking tale!).

When we have the final scores I'm planning on doing a little summary of this years races (if I have time) and, just for fun, I'm going to attempt to do a seasonal scoreboard (awarding points for final positions in each race). I think we all know who's going to come out on top of that one eh?

Happy christmas everyone!

Plenty of action on the last day including notably a tale of woe from my old Black Riband rival CMDR <-lightspeed-> who struggled to get an entry on the board. To compound his misery he must now become the first competitor I've ever had to disqualify as his hyperspace jump was initiated after 47s.

The good news is that 4 points in the normal space category keeps <-lightspeed-> above Cheetah, who played the joker card to secure 2 points instead of 1 for ninth place in the hyperspace category.

At the other end of the table cookiehole held off the challenge of Bruski and Brother Sabathius to win the hyperspace category by just three seconds in the tiebreaker.

CMDR cookiehole is the winner of all three categories and, consequently, the overall winner. £20 worth of Frontier store goodies to him!

Bruski takes second place ahead of Aken B. with only two fewer points.

In the middle of the table Brother Sabathius finished ahead of regulars Alec Turner, Inga Stevenson, Polly and Edelgard von Rhein with MrDragonRaaaar completing the rankings.

The sound you hear is me pounding my head in the panel in front of me for forgetting about the "Supercruise assist" feature for the cannonball run. In other words, if you have a station or signal source selected as a destination, your FSD helpfully spools down to lower your speed when you're near your target. If you were like me, you already had Sinclair Port as your navy target before you even launched. So instead of simply escaping from the planet's mass shadow, you also had to escape the station's virtual "mass shadow" too.

Look forward to seeing that Alec :)

My woes were my own fault really - I'll just swap out a terabyte disk on the last day of a buckyball race, what could go wrong lol...

Sorry again to cmdr <-lightspeed-> it was a classic coming together, shame I have no video. I boosted out, I even had him targeted, just as I approached the slot I thought, lightspeed's hollow square is suddenly moving quite fast, then we met right in the letter box at the worst possible time lol. I finished off his 10% hull FDL and the station finished off my conda.

Wow. I did not know that it had an effect when leaving a station.
Good to know for future races :)

WooWho!

a dominant performance by cookiehole and some valiant efforts from the supporting cast. well done all and thanks again to furrycat for a fiendishly entertaining race.

......the first competitor I've ever had to disqualify as his hyperspace jump was initiated after 47s.

blugger , probably should have checked that. another failing to add to my ever expanding list! i was pleased to get a 37.24Ly jump out of my Hauler though.

... shame I have no video. ....

i think i probably have. i'll dig it out tonight.

I'm going to attempt to do a seasonal scoreboard

that sounds brilliant, hope you find the time!

I didn't get it immediately...had to look at it for a good whale.

No rep to give around, but you know I'd do it if I could ;)

Congratulations to cookiehole because is the usual, relentless crusher of hopes and ambitions, to Bruski and Wolverine for giving him a run for the money in the Gone in 60 Seconds race, and to everyone for taking part in this.
I hope to see this race concept used again in the future, thank you furrycat for coming up with this!

Good news everyone three people. CMDR cookiehole displays generosity as well as skill, offering to pass on £15 of his winnings to the second, third and fourth placed competitors.

So Bruski, AkenB. and Brother Sabathius you can claim your choice of Frontier store goodies up to a value of £5 each. Send me your game account email address and choice of item(s). I'll try to dish out the prizes this afternoon/evening.

Sorry I saw a small typo here, of course I meant "generous, talented and humble gentleman", damn autocorrect...here, corrected. :D

You really can't find nicer gentlemen and ladies than around here! Thanks ;)

For anyone who could still be interested (in the mighty T7 performance :p), here are my three runs:

Thanks for hosting this great and quite educational race, furrycat!

Congratulations to Cookie, Bruski and Aken B and Merry Christmas to everyone!
