(Moved)
I really hate this forum (otherwise I'd be spending significantly more amount of time in here. Maybe this is a good thing
)
But really, it is aesthetically very very boring, it does not make good use of high resolution displays (as in everything is cramped to the middle like we're on some 1024x768 resolution monitors) and it seems to me like it's using very dated code, although I'm unsure which as it does'nt say on the bottom like on most sites.
I mean look at the Star Citizen guys! That's really shiny, that's doing it right
A real good mix of colors sticking with a blue theme, making good use of the contrast between light and dark blue as well as white.
But that's also asking way too much. For them they used that website's aesthetics as a huge advertisement, and it worked, it worked so damn well people are still spending money on the game. Why do they stick around? Because it's the most beautiful website on the whole internet! Really awesome design!
But this forum I just suffer through using. It doesn't need to change much but it definitely could use an upgrade. For example, forums I frequently visit, the Arch Linux Forums I'm really comfortable with, it uses the full width of my screen so everything isn't cramped up like on here. It uses no graphics (icons) rather than ugly graphics (like the icons in this one, hideous)
And one interesting thing is that they make good use of a color code for visited/not visited links. Blue for unvisited (blue is excellent as it makes you attentive and alert, it makes you "awake" like looking at the sky, the color for windows's welcome screen was not chosen at random, it was designed to catch attention, and blue does this very well)
And grey for visited (not black! grey!, which is slightly less boring than black) You can look here too (random post) and see how none of the "bodies" have the same background color. Luckily this site does this too, it's just that black and grey are... not as interesting as colors, and they don't exactly grab your attention like the white and bright greys of that site! (and the blues, this site uses dark orange, orange is actually not bad if it's used properly and can actually have a similar effect as blue; by being the colors of the sun) I'm not saying this site should use a white background though, I prefer reading white on black than the other way around. Easier on the eyes.
But overall, I think this site needs an aesthetics upgrade, and a usability upgrade. It really does not take much (very similar design as this page, but much more modern).
What do you guys think?
I think the current site is fit for smart phones, but not for FULL HD or bigger monitors (unless they are vertical)
As for colors, gradients can work wonders for aesthetic design if they are used right (usually should be very subtle), transparency can also work wonders. (For example on the SC site, if you look at the background it has a transparent grid over it, and the forum box itself is also very subtly transparent, this means you're not always looking at the same thing)
