The idiot explorer...

In early December I decided to hang up my trading cutter and go exploring in my anaconda.

I decided on a safe 22k jaunt to Jacques Station. Here are a few of the idiotic things I managed to achieve on the way...

1. On one boring long run to a far off planet I wanted to scan, I found out the hard way if you try to do field maintenance repairs in super cruise it kinda damages your ship rather badly.

2. Trying to get an FSD super charge at a neutron star doesn't work well if you head to the centre of said neutron star to obtain said boost.

3. Going AFK to let dogs in the garden while FSD is charging requires more heat sinks than a ship can carry.

4. Trying to find a black hole in the system map doesn't require 10 minutes clicking on every planet in the system, just look for the blacky black thingy.

5. Refulling and restocking at Jacques station was a brilliant idea. Forgetting to Repair before leaving Jacques, and then travelling 4k before realising, was stupid.

Finally... As I approached the bubble I wanted to dock at the closest station I could before hitting founders World to make sure I didn't have to go back to Jacques if I died.

A normal, intelligent person, would open up galaxy map and find the closest station. An idiot like myself will rely on finding one on the plotted route to founders World... which I did... 3 jumps from founders world!

So yes, I've been playing since beta but never went further than a few hundred light years out. Even someone playing this long can be a certified idiot when exploring properly for the first time :)

If you ever fancy going exploring don't team up with me, your ship will hate you if you do. I tend to find the wrong ways of doing everything :)

What else is gaming for? You sound exactly like the companion we all need.

Well, now you have done all these major mistakes you should be safer to Wing up with. Intelligent Players never make the same mistake twice (they find a new way to foul things up!).

Thank you for being so kind :)

The reason I didn't repair when I was clicking the other refuel, restock buttons was I wanted to keep the battered look of my conda. I was going to google to see if repairs also cleaned up the battered look.

Whilst researching it I got side tracked by elite YouTube videos embedded in posts, then I was enticed by YT's recommended videos... and before you know it, I'd forgotten how that 3 hour YouTube fest started and left the station without repairing.

Happy days :)

I don't think I should have started this trip by saying "I've been playing since Beta, what could possibly go wrong?"

:)

Facepalm moments are great teaching opportunities.

I fitted my Anaconda for a trip into the black, flew 8KLy, landed to do some driving and then realizing I fitted everything but the SRV.

I have been playing ED off and on for a year, primarily as an explorer. I went on Distant Worlds 3302 in my ASP Explorer, made it all the way to Beagle Point for the big party, then had a cryo pod mishap where I ended up being in cold storage for 7 months. When I woke up, I explored my way all the way back to the bubble. I just got back about a week ago. And after all that exploring, yesterday I learned two very valuable things:

1. When you have a min/maxed Exploraconda that requires severe power management, and you land on a planet and power up your planetary vehicle hanger; if that puts you over 100% power usage including the powered down thrusters, after you dismiss your ship it experiences a power failure, it does not go anywhere and completely powers down on the surface. Because it is powered down the planetary vehicle hanger will not allow you to board the ship and fix the problem so after a couple minutes of helplessness. your ship explodes right in front of you:

2. When you submit a ticket because you do not fully understand what happened at the time and they respond and are sympathetic, respawning your ship for you, and you summon it back to the surface to leave and go home(being thankful that you are in the Pleiades Nebula and not 20 kylies away from the bubble)the ship still has massive power failure so you have to watch it do a complete nose dive from high orbit and explode again, right in front of you.(no SS of that because I was so stunned that it happened)

SO see? Even somewhat veteran explorers learn new things all the time!! [haha][big grin][haha]

P.S. after another ticket, they were able to guide me on how I can respawn in orbit and fix my power management issue to get the thrusters working again. I lost a smidge of exploration data, but at least I did not have to rebuy at all. Lesson learned!

Here is another one. I installed a 1D Power Distributor in my conda to gain some LY. When I landed on a planet and went in my SRV I could not dismiss the ship. Nor could I board the ship anymore. I re-logged and the conda was in orbit. After recalling the ship, it dropped onto the planet like a stone. The ship was lying on its back. I re-logged and the recalled the ship again. This time the ship exploded when it dropped on the planet. I re-logged into ED (No horizon) and I was back in orbit in the conda. Problem was, I now had a zombie ship. I could fly it. But I could not board it with the fighter or SRV. FD came to the rescue. I reckon that the conda needs a working boost, if you want to dismiss it.

I don't care about lightyears so much anymore. Better safe then sorry.

Fly safe Cmdr's. o7

WOW! I am loving these tales of woe... the happy ending ones anyway :)

Leaving without the SRV... haven't done that one... yet :)

In a cheeky, evil grin sort of way, I'm kinda glad I'm not the only one who will admit they have made silly, idiotic or even downright dreadful mistakes. I just need to learn from them all hehehehe.

no major "mistakes"... you made it back in one piece. I once was out 12 kLy for an explorer meet up on a planet. Thought a nice lowpass would impress the others. And of course I was happy to see other CMDR's again.
Well, I just slightly hit the ground and found out that it is enough to explode with D Shields.

So I would definatly team up with you :)

You sound like the perfect team mate :)

Yeah!
I will share my facepalm moment with you too.
I left Jaques fresh repaired and refilled to do some exploring AND SRV-racing 5kly out I found a nice planet to do some canyon jumping. Crashed my SRV, thought "no prob" there is another one in my hangar.
There isn't! Bought just one😲

YAY! Welcome to my World Antoni! Together we can take down the universe, one mistake at a time :D
