IAU Star Names Cervantes and Shakespeare

Hi Commanders!

IAU (International Astronomical Union)has created a Working Group on Star Names (WGSN), was approved by the IAU Executive Committee in May 2016 to formalise star names that have been used colloquially for centuries. WGSN has now established a new catalogue of IAU star names, with the first set of 227 approved names published on the IAU website.

Elite Dangerous already use IAU star name like Achenar, this suggestion post has two objectives:

1) Change Mu Arae system name for the IAU approved name, Cervantes. The planets names have been approved for the IAU according the system name to b (Quijote), c(Dulcinea), d(Rocinante) and e(Sancho) then change the planets also.

2) Appeal to ED community in a quest for search an unnamed system and promote it as Shakespeare system for the IAU.

I Hope all the community understand this appeal like a demonstration of our love for the universe.

A very smart and good idea! I wish I 'd had it before! [big grin]

Seriously, I think that at least frontier should name stations and cities in that system using names taken from Don Quixote. It would be fun and a deserved homage to Cervantes and his novel.

That would be some quality culture added to the game, especially if it's a name already aprroved by the IAU. All the spanish community would like, no doubt!! :D

Any eventual Shakespearean references can even make the game gain some brownie points with regards to local content requirements by British authorities if applicable... :D

Note: If some admin can correct the thread le to "[Suggestion] IAU Star Names Cervantes and Shakespeare"

Wow!! This is a great idea !! It is very cultural and this also reflects the reality.

Stars in ED do not always use the IAU recommended name, or even the "common name" if a star is given a common name. Search the galaxy map for "Deneb"; you'll find the star Denebola, but the star commonly known as Deneb is actually known as "Alpha Cygni" in ED. So it would be entirely reasonable and consistent if Mu Arae/Cervantes were still called "Mu Arae" in ED.

Further, while the ED planets in Mu Arae appear to be accurately modelled on the IRL planets around that star as far as they were known when the ED starmap was compiled, their names are another matter. The planet Mu Arae 1 (IRL a.k.a. Mu Arae b, Cervantes b or Quijote) already has a name in ED: "Dawlings Rest". The space station orbiting this planet is "Herreshoff Hangar".

Mu Arae is not a "legacy system" from the earlier Elite game maps, so these names given to them in ED are presumably Kickstarter reward-names. If so, then that person (or perhaps those two people) paid real-world money to get those names into the game; they cannot simply be deleted and changed. Those names would have to be transposed to another system.

Then you'd have all the problems of players saying "I used to be friends with the Mu Arae Black Hand Gang, where did they go?" and "I bought cheap cobalt from Herreshoff Hangar a month ago, but now they're an agricultural station?".

I'm not saying it shouldn't be done, or couldn't be done, I'm just saying it's not as simple as edit-save&replace. There are ramifications to every change they make on the starmap, which is why FD changes it only rarely, and even more rarely for places of any consequence.

Last time I was in Mu Arae (a year ago), the planet Mu Arae 1 still had "Mu Arae 1" as a name. Y have to check if it has been changed in game or your information is wrong. And of course there is no need to change the planetary or orbital bases, just system and planets names. Also, Mu Arae 1, the closest to the star with an orbital period of about 9 days, would correspond to the planet Dulcinea. Rocinante, Quijote and Sancho (orbital periods of 310, 643 and 4205) are suposed to be gas giants.

Faction names are just variables that can be changed without affecting reputation, and again, there is no need to change economies.

Yeah, I don't get his logic, why would changing names mean you need to change everything else, too? I'm sure I wouldn't suddenly be a scientist just because I legally changed my name to Albert Einstein.

Guys, Remember this a appeal searching an change that would have repercussion nothing more than a change of name in the map, in honor to IAU and Pamplona planetarium work who requested that this system be labeled as Cervantes, in honor of science and culture.

Ah, double-checked the databases and Herreshoff Hangar actually orbits planet 4, not planet 1.

I've never been to Mu Arae and the system population is too small for it to be flagged as pre-Explored, so I can't see the system map for it in-game; I have to go by what's in the off-site databases to see what's in the system (I linked to the EDSM database page for this system in my previous post). And those report the first planet in the system is already named, not un-named as you've depicted it. It's entirely possible the EDSM data is wrong; it's also possible FD renamed the planet themselves sometime in the past year.

If someone else has been to Mu Arae (I can't go there now, I'm way out near Colonia) or is in the vicinity, they can verify whether or not the first planet already has a name. If it doesn't, good; that would remove the obstacle to renaming the planets.

I mentioned changing the name of the orbital base because Elfino mentioned it as something that should be done in post #2. And I mentioned changing economies because that's what would likely have to happen if the name "Dawling's Rest" had to be reallocated to a different planet in a different system.

Seeing as this topic raises interest, if you've been near Colonia, I invite you to have a look here. Good thing about Colonia is that it's virgin. I'd love to see pretty and meaningful names in that area someday ;)

Thanks for the offer, but this appeal refer to an official IAU (International Astronomical Union) system name, to make ED more realistic.
