News Elite Dangerous - Oculus Rift update

I just hope they fix the judder problem in Supercruise. I can get Vertical Sync 75fps no problem in normal space but the fps progressively slows down in supercruise and makes it very uncomfortable. i7 @ 4.00Mhz with GTX 980 on Low settings. This is a well known problem and hopefully they will give it priority for Oculus Runtime 1.0 as we've all put up with it for a long time on the DK2.

Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus, the young genius of virtual reality has made the journey to Alaska to deliver himself the first copy.

While still waiting for my pre-ordered RV Rift, I installed to software (including the Oculus shop/home/launcher-thingie) and got my key from Frontier. Only problem is that is seems Oculus wants me to reinstall ED under their C:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus\Downloads\frontier-developments-plc-elite-dangerous folder.

I don't suppose I can trick Oculus, using junctions and such, to use my existing installation of ED? Feels like a waste of a lot of perfectly good (and not too cheap) SSD disk space to have two full installs lying around, both needing updates etc.

Anyone who have tried?

I haven't tried, but it should be possible to run the standalone ED installation. You might need to find the 'enable unknown sources' checkbox in the Oculus settings, though.

Yeah, that's what I thought too (and I did), but that's how far I got. I see no way of registering games from "unknown sources" into the launcher...

On a side note, the tyrannosaurus rex in the museum from the Oculus Dreamdeck is awesome! :D

Does Elite not just start by using Frontier's own launcher? With mine, the oculus software is woken up by Elite.

It would be nice if Elite did appear on Oculus Home. It would also be nice if their games could be installed onto other locations. hopefully they will make improvements to their software.

It does, but the first time integration between the Oculus launcher, the ED launcher, creating a Frontier Account and activating VR mode in the game is not good. I transcribed Giant Bomb's experience of getting from Home to The Black in this feedback thread for FD: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=240431 .

I feel for FD, I face the same challenges in my day job. And I've felt the pain of seeing a technically inferior but better packaged competitor eat our breakfast first hand.

I see what you mean. That video is bound to affect sales. I reckon their opinion of the game might have been higher if they had a smoother start. I hope that the version of Elite they sell on the Oculus Store comes with VR as the default option.

I've being trying Elite on the DK2 and it looks fantastic. Landing on planets feels 'REAL' , dog fights are impressive (being able to follow your target with your eyes), and with the fix for the camera when driving on planets, driving and all the acrobatics are really exciting. I also tried the supersampling at 1.5 and it worked very well although sometimes the fps would go down (but that's because of my rig). Thanks FD. Very good work. Keep it up.

I've been playing ED for about a year. I just got my Rift CV1 in, and I'm getting ED Horizons to work in Steam VR with the Rift. I play on keyboard, so it's a bit of a challenge. Looks like I've got everything mapped the way I need EXCEPT for one thing: When I'm in Galaxy view or System view, and the blue selector circle is over a planet - the usual small panel pops up giving me options to "target", "map route", etc. But there's no way for me move the focus off of "target" to anything else. The mouse, of course, doesn't work in selecting stuff in that info panel in a galaxy, in VR, for some reason, though the mouse works fine for steering my ship. But I can't go into a system and check info. None of my existing keyboard commands work, and I can't find that command in the "Options" panel for moving the focus off of the first selection "Target" to stuff like "Map Route".

Anyone else run into this?

Thanks,
Robert

Hello VR guys. After saving long and hard for a new PC capable of running an Oculus Rift, I finally have one and at Christmas I bought a Rift. Having watched the various introductory 'video' clips, I was blown away. I eagerly downloaded and installed the VR version of Elite. Everything went fine. I started the game having heard people raving about it, I was disappointed at the graphics. I could not recognise ships until I was on top of them. I have done nothing other than start up the game. I assume there are settings that I need to change to get things corrected. I have a 1080 graphics card and an Intel I7 processor running on Windows 10, so things should be pretty good. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to set things up.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Stag,

I have a GTX 1080 and Oculus Rift setup. I use the Ultra VR setting with no further adjustments and find the clarity and quality awesome.

One thing I did do very wrong when I first got the rift was position the headset on my face and calibrate it properly. I could get the green bars in focus easly but I always felt when I looked left and right nothing stayed in focus, so I ended up moving my head around a lot in game just to get the centre of view in full focus.

The problem was the screens were too far from my eyes and that made the peripheral vision and focus when looking off center poor. This was due to the nose area not sitting snugly to my face, i.e. there was a gap and I felt I needed to push the headset down into my nose at the low end of the headset to get it fitting right.

Oculus support suggest removing the facial interface (uncomfortable yes for sure) and try using the rift without it. WOW, the clarity and focus improved drastically. In elite the ships and hud text all became clear, even the mic sounded better. I ended up actually cutting part of the foam off the rift facial interface and putting a VR Cover on it so it got closer to my eyes. Oculus, for their part actually suggested I try this and sent me a free new facial interface incase things went wrong with my mod. They are also going to release a range of facial interface sizes in 2017 as not all people have the default Rift facial interface shape.

So I doubt that the setup you have is the problem, more the calibration.

Do you get really high clarity in other games? Can you look left and right with your eyes keeping your head still and what you see is in clear focus in other games? If peripheral vision goes out of focus then it's likely the same problem I had.

Cheers,

Bert

1st off disable steamVR, ED support the rift natively and this should be better than using steamVR.

i cant help you with the rest as i use hotas sorry

One thing I did not mention is that I do not use Steam. I got Elite direct from Frontier. My monitor display for Elite is excellent at 1920 x 1080. I have not bought any other games yet as I was so disappointed with the graphics in Elite. When watching the introductory 'videos' and the free 'Dreamscape' 'video' the images in the Oculus where very good. I have seen lots of posts from people with older versions of the Oculus and HTC, and how to set the graphics up, but very little about the latest version. I could find nothing in the Oculus 'Settings'. They appear to be just general settings. May be I am looking in the wrong place. I am a plug and play person and not very good at what goes on behind the scenes with games. It would be nice If Frontier gave a little guidance. May be they do and I just don't know where to look. Thank you for replying.

In the Elite (NOT the Oculus) graphics settings menu, most settings have a small button to the left that expands the options. A bit fiddley with the Rift on as you have to use the mouse. Hope this helps.
