News Elite Dangerous - Oculus Rift update

Zac, perhaps you could explicitly clarify in the OP that as well as Horizons, Elite Dangerous Season 1 will support Oculus Rift.

Since the Rift runtime 1.0 itself requires 64 bit Windows (Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer), Elite Dangerous Season 1 running on 32 bit Windows installs won't be able to use the Rift.

No idea whether 32 bit ED installs on 64 bit Windows installs will be able to run with the 64 bit Rift runtime, perhaps you could ask a windows engineer? It would appear to on be the list of Things Your Mother Told You Not To Do But You Did Anyway that QA people tend to think of.

That is great news! Thanks Zac & the FD team, this has made my day. One of the main reasons I pre-ordered CV1 was for Elite and now I know that support coming on release I'm a very happy chap.

And to those comments above that VR is only for "rich kids who cry for their daddies to buy them", please remember that not everyone is a 14yo kid, some of us are adults and have jobs which pay well enough for us to buy nice things. Bring on the VR!

I did NOT say anything like VR is only for kids. I said the overpriced, buggy first release of any new technological toy`s audience is kids which are eventually hyped-up and have no idea how money is earned. No need to get defensive here because I was referring to a certain group of consumers, not players of ED. I am 33 years old and can buy a VR every month if I want to but I am doing the "logical" and "responsible" thing having a family, etc. and waiting for it to come out with a lower price and bugs fixed and has more supported software (mostly games).

Peace out

Hey, at least recognize that we "ILlogical" and "IRresponsible" :)p) early adopters are paving the way, by demonstrating commercial viability in VR products, for you to be able to buy more advanced and less buggy VR hardware in the future. If EVERYone waited until the products were perfected to purchase, well, then they would never come to exist because the first generation of VR would die out immediately. If you want to help accelerate the VR revolution, nothing would help more than supporting the industry with your hard earned $$. That's how I see it anyway.

I was kind of kidding making a reference to today's kids nothing that serious. Still I still back up my claim knowing that especially in japan kids form a line in front of stores to be the first one to buy new tech items from weeks ago regardless of any kind of budget awareness. This is just an example but a major one. I have nothing against supporting those companies by your choice at all and I respect it. I still cant help but not agree with consumer purchases affecting the future of VR at this point however. Because those manufacturers are already backed up by big companies and funded enough for their development of new technology. It is not like they are risking anything, the VR is the next big thing therefore it will inevitably thrive and be the standart anyway. just like a smart phone. I simply find it more reasonable to get a better product with lower cost in the future and see it as an investment....I mean...who wouldnt if you look at this way?

There are a lot of early VR adopters in Elite's players, that's not a coincidence that this game is a reference for VR, and Elite's players are a lot older than the average players of other games.

Happy news!

I put my DK2 back in its box when I upgraded my laptop to Windows v10. I'll be delighted to take it out of the box and plug it back in when the update arrives :)

Me, I don't! :D I'm not rich by any means, but I have enough disposable income that it's not a big deal to buy... so I am! I had a DK1 and DK2 (incidentally - sold the 1 for more than it cost, the 2 for what it cost, both after many months of use) and love VR, even in this "poorer product" phase - I literally do not, and would not, play ED without VR. Since I sold the DK2 haven't been in the game.

This is very great news indeed. But, the big question for me, having been away from the game for quite some time now, is has the dev team fixed the issue in the game where frame rates tank just because lots of ships exist in a system, and not necessarily on-screen. That has always been the big downside to using VR in this game.

Great news... at last a smile from me:D ...just gotta build that awesome PC to run the CV1 (pre-ordered birthday present) when it arrives[noob]

As a kickstarter - lifetime pass holder; will the 'pass' be valid on Oculus site for a limited time or only the Frontier one for ever (life)?

It was fixed so framrates are no longer dropping in inhabited systems.

Hi, can we please get an update if nvidia game works vr SLI support (or the AMD equivalent for crossfire) will be supported? SLI support is extremely important for the current generation of gpu's, if we want to play at acceptable frame rates in VR with settings turned up. Will SLI for VR be supported now or in the future at all?

Hi Everyone,

We know that you’ve been eagerly awaiting news about Elite Dangerous on the Oculus Rift, which is why we’re pleased to be able to confirm that Elite Dangerous' official support for Oculus Rift's launch SDK will be available with the launch of the consumer version of the Oculus Rift.

Oculus made a post about this on their blog, which you can read here: https://www.oculus.com/en-us/blog/elite-dangerous-brings-deep-space-to-oculus-for-rift-launch/

Before the Oculus launch we will be releasing an updated Elite Dangerous build which will contains support for the latest Oculus SDK, available at no additional charge. All of the existing and future customers that have an Oculus Rift consumer headset will be able to use it.

For our existing and future players who wish to migrate over to the Oculus Store, they will be able to get a free code from the Frontier Store (as they do with Steam keys currently) .

In addition, the Oculus Store will be selling a Deluxe Edition bundle which will include Elite Dangerous, Elite Dangerous Horizons Season Pass, a starter pack of paint jobs and a bobble head. As with Steam, Oculus Store customers will also have to create a Frontier Store account (for no extra charge) as part of the purchase process.

Frontier and Elite Dangerous are at the forefront of VR, and we’re delighted to be able to confirm our support for Oculus Rift when they launch their consumer headset.

As always, I will be on hand answering questions for a while so let me know if you have any questions at all. :)

Thanks,

Zac

So do you support SLI-VR as it could boost performance for lower cost.
Or do you plan to support it ?

i'm delighted too, and i bow in awe and respect.

i've been very critic with frontier but these last 3 moves are an awesome streak. you guys are truly special. godspeed!

Well, as I don't drink, don't smoke or go on holiday abroad (or even on holiday at all really) the pennies saved this time round went on a CV1 on first day of pre-purchase. Just hope they get it here as soon as they can from the 28th......

Ever since trying ED on a DK2 it just hasn't been the same on a monitor.
At first I was like most here and willing to wait it out until VR was more established etc. Demos and early games showed it had potential possibly in the future, but nothing was that good that it was a must have....until ED came along and changed that in a heartbeat. ED shows that without doubt VR can (and will) change the gaming landscape if done right.

While this may be the wrong thread, will Frontier also (in the future, sometime) be providing any support for the OSVR platform? (Some of us were hoping that the Occulus would be affordable, and we don't have a lot of disposable income! ^_^;; )
