Elite / Frontier Just to say Hi! .. and a quick question re galaxy views

Hey folks, i am a dedicated 80's retro gamer having played elite on the acorn electron and then frontier for my amiga (and again in the late 90's on PC - but had to reconfig the set up to work!) - i missed FFE the first time around.

having had a few years away from really getting down and dirty with the old gaming experiences (thanks to tony blair and george bush:mad:) i have been looking at the elite franchise to rekindle that flame.

Having tried oolite and found it somewhat lacking for me i came across FFE with the glFFE mods and Whoa! - its like being a (very) early twenties something again!!:p

anyway its great .... and i'd like to thank any and all contributors to it for getting me going again.

whilst i am on i'd like to say i have a problem when looking at the galaxy view, it kinda 'shimmers' as if there are two galaxy images i am looking at - any ideas anyone - i can live without it if not and will have a look at it myself (my programming exp is limited to making addons (very basic) for MS flight sim)

good huntin'

Rob

Hello to a fellow ex-Electron owner.

I played GLFFE all the way through but didn't have any problems like you are experiencing. You could try reinstalling i suppose, but it's more likely to be something do do with your graphics settings in the config file for GLFFE.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge of this sort of thing will help.

I agree; Oolite is nice but...

The galaxy rendering is a known bug in glFFE but Kolijico took a "who cares" view
I find by clicking on the galaxy icon a few times the shimmering stops. Also after you've zoomed in or out, clicking on the galaxy icon stops the shimmering again. To be honest though, I've never found the galaxy view very useful. Interesting yes, but not useful. :)

thanks Steve, thats exactly the fix ive been using (clicking a few times), as you say its no biggy, i'm having far too much fun with the rest of the game (maybe should read more like - having too much fun with the rest of the 'experience' - cos thats what this is):D

Hi to you too Turwhitt - thanks for taking the time to drop me a note - i still have the electron collecting dust at my mums house, gonna set it up one day and show my son the joys of tape deck loading!! - if i can find a tape deck:eek:

cheers Guys
Rob

I'm certain that he'll be just as impressed as we were all those years ago....
We're always waiting for something. In the days of the BBC, Spectrum etc it was waiting for the tape to load the game; now it's waiting to download music and stuff

how true Steve, only the other night my lad was giving it some because the xbox was 'taking its time to load up', bl00dy 'ell, i remember having to type in programmes from 'computer and video games' magazine for about a couple of hours only to get god knows how many syntax or run errors and then have to debug for another hour just to run the program and find out it was crap! ... oh to be 15 again

but y'know i would go back to those days in a heartbeat:D

by the way i've been on your site and enjoyed looking at the content, good to see astronomy is still alive and kicking in some corners of the world

and thanks for the blue earth fix - worked a treat (but i dont fancy working the code to get London on solid terra firma - in 1000 years it probably will be in the sea anyway)

take it easy
