A safe "return" from Distant Worlds!!!

Almost a year to the day later, I have finally managed to make it back to inhabited space today in Colonia. I decided to dock here to secure the data I'd collected in what I hoped would be a relatively safe space. I practiced controlling my craft a bit on a moon 3 jumps away and made sure all my controls were still bound right. Then came the moment I'd been waiting for for months. I dropped out of cruise and had the station there in front of me. I repeated the words "landing gear" and "docking clearance" several times like a mantra until I'd actually received clearance and ensured my gear was lowered. Then came the shoot through the mail slot. A maneuver I'd pulled off effortlessly hundreds if not thousands of times prior did not come easy this time. My stately glide through the slot in my Anaconda was tarnished when I ground off all my topside antennas when I misjudged my alignment. The rest went fine once I landed on the pad in the back. I generated roughly 50 million credits of data from the voyage. I'm sure had I spent the time farming bounties or trading I'd have made exponentially more in the intervening time, but somehow this feels like a much larger accomplishment.

In short, I've never had a release of breath and a total body relief that compared to that moment when I'd successfully docked. Only a meager 22K LY's to go back to the bubble and the start of my next phase with engineers!

Glad you made it. Did you let out a huge sigh of relief when you knew you were safely docked?

Might be worth spending a little time around Colonia, acclimatising to civilisation before you head back. If you have Horizons pick up an SRV and try out some planet landings.

One more thing in case you don't know, there are small bases between Colonia and the bubble where you can sell data, refuel and repair. It helps break up that last 22ly.

I know that feeling well.

When returning on my first trip out I nearly hyper-ventilated as I arrived in my first inhabited system only to be interdicted within seconds. I had no idea what control button did what, attempted to high wake out but pressed the wrong button and low waked instead with the loss of a couple of rings of my pathetically weak shields. Low waking seemed to be enough though and after a comical arrival at a landing pad in the station, breathed a huge sigh of relief. It really is a moment like no other in a game.

Second trip out I was fortunate enough that on return, a beta release had just occurred so I had a fair bit of escape and landing practice there before trying it for real.

Welcome back commander! glad you could make it :)

It's weird, isn't it? When you're out in the black and making planetary landings then your landing gear are second nature, but once through the mail slot of a station it's like 'landing what now?'

Anyway...welcome back :)

Always a sigh of relief from me as the lift drops your ship down into the safety of the station interior, welcome home Cmdr :)

Wow, so epic. Last stragglers of DWE are still coming in.

I left before DWE out west and have been out there ever since. It is amazing how many things are out here that you just stumble across.

Welcome back commander! I’ve been seeing you inch your way closer and closer on the galaxy map for a long time now, there are still a few others like you out there who haven’t come back yet!

From what I read on the odd e-scrap of Inter-Stellar Newsweek my battered Receiver picks up...it really does sound much safer out here.

Still 54.6k LY away from "Home" and I don't think I'm coming back. Can someone put my apartment on GalTree, please?

Thank you all! I'm now about 1/2 way back on the neutron highway between Colonia and the bubble. It's actually pretty user friendly and is an element of risk / reward that I think is tuned about right. I'm looking forward now to modding my Anaconda to 55+ LY's and doing some shorter range in depth exploration between now and the next distant worlds expedition. Also, I was pretty happy to see that we have a DW emblem that I can plaster all over my ship!
