Making a living as an explorer

You can make a lot of money ferrying high-paying passengers around local to the Bubble - within a Kylie or two - but it's not really *exploring* as such. The payouts for the longer trips are larger, but that advantage is more than offset by the greatly increased travel time. Nevertheless, if you're going in a particular direction anyway you might as well bring a passenger along if you can spare the space and the mass.

Agreed, as a quick side note, explorer passenger mission payouts do NOT count towards exploration rank. Which is a shame, really, would've eased my way towards Elite quite a bit... :)

So I found myself in a slightly poetic frame of mind this morning (never a good thing) and I'm afraid I'm going to have to inflict this on you all:

For those of us who roam the black,
It's a different kind of life.
Not for us the lure of trade,
Or combateers and strife.

We surf the winds of nameless suns,
And bask in neutron beams.
We gaze in awe at vistas raw,
And sights that none have seen.

We pierce the veil of nebulas,
To see what they conceal.
We hear the lure of 'one more jump',
And see what is revealed.

And one day we may not return,
And our ship be never found.
A tangled mass of metal,
On some cold and alien ground.

But 'till that day we'll live the life,
And journey more and more,
For we are those that call ourselves,
Explorers evermore!

That's nice.
Don't knock your self, it's not Vogon Poetry!
:)

Scanning neutron stars and black holes, they're right there and they'll double your money, plus, if you're the first, you'll get a 50% bonus. It can be worth your time to scan Earth-like and Ammonia Worlds if they're not too far away (I've gotten 100,000 cr off of one planet before).

New since yesterday: 'sightseeing adventure' passengers rewards contribute towards explorer rank.

I'm assuming those long-distance 'explorer' passengers do the same, but haven't confirmed yet. Will know after weekend, when I come back from this 7k ly passenger ferry mission...

You can also do the Guardians mission that's available now (for four more weeks, perhaps?), where you can go to the first alien ruin site (others haven't been found yet) and run about with your SRV doing some xeno-archaeology. For every data you manage to decode, you get one million credits, so it can be a pretty good way of getting a nice amount of money. No idea if it counts towards exploration rank or not though.
