Certainly an exhausting grind to unlock the totem combinations.

I too have begun to notice the ones that do not note the fail combinations - is there possibly a combination requires to complete only those for data?

Later I will exhaust the list of combinations I have and see what is missing - if there is, I got a whole new list to re-do to hound those specific blanks.

EDIT; I am certainly hoping it does not require some fancy combination of scanning specific ones with no fails to get the data list. I will hate it if I gotta go through that much to complete it.

It seems like when you get hate mail, both are wrong, and when there is no message at least one is right. So is it then a process of trial and elimination? I couldn't relate the data types acquired with a bad scan and the ancient piece required. I was on Mobius and some obelisks lit up that had never done so before, so that's a thing.

There are more than 15 obelisks. What i have seen and noticed during my stay in the ruins. When done on solo the obelisks default to a set opening pattern, when in group or open a lot more active obelisks appear sometimes upto 4 in a bank of 6 of them, i thought this was because multiple commanders scanning each one and then extinguishing them and therefore more active obelisks would show up, but this is not the case exactly, every active obelisk each commander scans stays active for the next commander, the one who had scanned it however sees it extinguish, this has been confirmed before. So for all 103 ish or more possible texts this can only mean that the obelisks need to be unlocked to provide more data points. This is a pure hypothesis but today i proved it for myself when i saw a different light on at an obelisk location id previously scanned and so scanned it with a combo i had tried before at the same area. This time i got a new data entry.

This isn't meant to sound critical of your comment, it just happens to be relevant to my comment.

I think the understanding that it's possible for other obelisks to light up is a given now... but the important part is working out *how* that happens beyond "sitting in open and basic dumb luck". Clearly there's something to do, which we haven't worked out. It's incredibly likely, with multiple commanders possibly trying multiple things and the way instancing works is that the effect of scanning particular obelisks is the key. **

Reason it's really important to work out for me personally is because I had a route which I always used. And on the 8th scan my game would *always* crash with an adjudication error. If scanning certain obelisks with certain things in the hold is the key, and any of those combos need more than 8 scans, then it's a gamebreaking issue, but I want to be sure before I put the effort in reporting the bug.

** Say you have two obelisks, O1 and O2, and five different combos you can scan with a casket, C1,C2,C3,C4,C5.

Assume you need to scan O1 with C3 in your hold, and O2 with C4 in your hold.

A single-player brute-forcing that with one attempt at each, each instance would take a lot of effort... (O1-C1, O2-C1 Fail), relog, (O1-C2, O2-C1 Fail), relog,(O1-C3, O2-C4 fail) for literally hundreds of attempts.

What probably happens in Open/Groups is say Player A scans O1-C4 (incorrect) and O2-C4 (correct). In solo that wouldn't work, and you'd have to relog to try again. But in Open/Groups, if Player B came along and scans O1-C3... the players are in the same instance... that instance has already recorded a scan of O2-C4 even though it's by a different player, so bam, for all players the unlock happens and new obelisks are available for anyone, even if they haven't even scanned an obelisk.

Has anyone thought of a more...inclusive numbering system for the obelisks? The 1-15 works for getting the first 13 data points in solo, but it's pretty bad for open, when a lot of different ones can be running.

Hey its you! We were in the same instance a little while ago, and kinda chatting about this ingame. I'm also thinking about the numbering but really have no idea. Best thing would probably be to set an identifier for the different banks, and number each obelisk within that bank.

I think the real question is, would the devs make it so that it can only work through such a completely random and near unknowable manner? It would require a pretty massive effort by the players (a bunch working in concert in private I guess?) and a lot of time (is even the approximately one month given enough?) to produce enough data to put it all together. They like to obfuscate things somewhat, but that seems ridiculous to me. One thing in particular that strikes me is most of the biggest breakthroughs in this game usually involve one person having something of a eureka moment (albeit using information figured out by others) rather than a group of people grinding numbers.

I kind of wonder if this may all be just overthinking it. Since in open it's acting more like a MMO kind of thing, could this just be their way of keeping people from getting in each other's ways?

Now, all that said, one thing I've been wondering if we work along the lines of the former assumption -- that something we're doing changes them like this -- then what if it's dumping of the parts? Eg where specifically they are dumped -- perhaps related to something else (like having the beacons active.) Maybe just try dumping them all in a pile in various places with and without the beacons? There are some areas where obelisks seem to point, that semi-circle area where they arc around an empty spot, and of course those big round areas that all seem kind of fishy in general.

By the way, does it bug anyone else how incredibly asymmetrical this place is? *shivers*

Also, for what it's worth, I just discovered with my scanning route, with the exception of the Tablet group, I'd never scan a whole "bank" of obelisks before I'd hit a crash, so I'd never have really observed much in the way of effects.

Using this map, my route was:
14, 10, 11, 12, 13, 9, 8, 6, 7(crash)
7, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 15

With that in mind, I'm going to try the following (again using that map).

Take two that have an "unlock", e.g Casket and Urn.

Go scan all the ones in the Casket blob, and then check all the ones in Urn blob and see if any extra have unlocked.

Reason I'm going down this path is that at one point (maybe I tried something different) I scanned some, and went to 8 (which I hadn't scanned), and it wasn't active. Naively, I relogged and it was active again.

I usually get about halfway though the obelisks before I get kicked to menu.

Strange. The only crash I had was when I suddenly dumped two pieces at almost the exact same moment and it lost the connection to the transaction server it said. This was very near to the end of the shutdown warnings, so maybe it could even have been their side that did it.

Oh yeah, double-dropping from an SRV is gameplay suicide. If you do it from your ship in space, you jam your cargo hold open permanently and have to relog in order to supercruise/hyperspace away.

But yeah.. guaranteed about halfway through I get an "Adjudication Server Error", and when I relog it's as if the game has forgotten where I was and what state I was in. E.g the error might occur at obelisk 7 (having worked my way anti-clockwise from Obelisk 14) with a totem and a tablet.... and when I log back in I'm back at 14, with an empty cargohold (and my cargo in the ship), but if I got a successful scan before the crash, that message will be in my inbox (and the reward added).

Same. Unless its intentional. So my thought was that the only current way to solve it is in open.

I like to assume FD wouldn't be malicious like that.

They did say it was going to be hard. But who knows.

(quoting is hard if you mess it up.)

I did not visit the ruins since the patch because I'm in the Rift right now, but I try to follow this thread.
I remember, before the patch we discussed about the diagrams shown on the obelisks.
Are they still there?
If yes, could they contain one ore more information about the following:
- combo or item for successful scan
- result of scan
- next active obelisk

Sorry if this was already mentioned and I overread it

That is an interesting idea I haven't seen yet.

I'm available for some group testing if you need a SRV at the site. I've got my 13 data files and I'm parked on the planet. We should setup a discord server so we can all talk it through.

Thanks,

If the obelisk required Orb + Tablet or whatever, we both had to have it in our SRVs. When one of us scanned the obelisk, we both got the research. If one of us had Orb + Tablet, and the other had just Orb, only the guy with the Orb + Tablet got the research on that scan.

Although it seemed to be something weird early on. I was scanning obelisks (hadn't look a the spreadsheet yet) and the guy I was winged with got the research, not me. Only happened twice, but I don't know if it was just a glitch or what.

Sounds like the combination required is defined by the instance, but did you try this with *different* pairs of artefacts in your SRVs?

If we are going to be dealing with a lot of obelisks, then could someone come up with a numbering system? We have the 1-15 maps, but it may be better to number ALL the obelisks.
