I suppose I am hooked now

I'm from the class of '84, so to me Elite was a space combat & trading game. Right?

Right, then the "Silly ships" expedition popped up, which looked like fun. I was already eye-balling the Hauler to try exploration because of the low price and good jump range. So I bought one, prepped it, engineered the FSD and took it for a test run to see if it could survive with it.

Having hardly any clue what to look for and what would be a rare or special discovery I just dropped diagonally down from the bubble and looked around in the untagged systems that I crossed. Basically, just jumping, scanning, scooping and relatively boring.

Then I came across this purple planet with a really wide set of rings. Don't know if it is anything special or rare, but I knew I liked the view. A bit further out in the same system, a planet with nice tints in the rings.

So, I took some snaps, prepared to jump to the next system and then it hit me: I feel reluctant to leave. I know it is just a game and it is all just generated, but I am the first one here, I really like the view and I want to stay a bit longer. I do not want to leave...

So there it is, I want to be an explorer now. When I return from this trip, I'll probably get me a T6 (which is within reach, financially), get some engineering done and head out again.

Cool atmospheric pictures.

Try flying in some ice rings around a blue gas giant for example.
If the light is right it will take your breath away, with those white ice boulders, and that huge blue orb in the background.

Welcome back CMDR, and enjoy happy travels on board of the Hauler. The T6 will be awesome, it is a very good exploration ship.

Awesome images, but if I may a little tip: if you exit supercruise, the same image will feature the ship's engine blast too. :)

Great story, thanks for sharing! Exploration is what kept me in this game. Money is a means to an end and once you have a ship you love, have outfitted the way you want with whatever modifications you want there is nothing keeping you in the bubble. If they ever give us the ability to repair our hull in space I can leaving port and not coming back for months. Safe travels, Commander :)

The tether has broken. Another one to join us.

I've probably take hundreds of images but never noticed the bit about engine blast appearing if you exit supercruise. Thanks for the tip, I must look out for that in future :)

Might as well use this thread as a travel diary now :D

Currently on my way to the Silly Ships meeting point, with the little Hauler. It's been baptized "Hommel" (bumblebee in Dutch), for obvious reasons.

And this baby is waiting for me when I return. I used the MKIII to get an A4 FSD engineered. Getting a ban of a week in Deciat was not a smart move, but managed to get to grade 5 before the Silly Ship expedition departure. With all exploration goodies, the T6 still jumps well over 40LY. This will be quite an improvement over the fragile Hauler. Paint job will be "Turbulance" in green, yellow and white.

Good choice of ship, Cmdr. The Type-6 is a damn fine mistress.

Look forward to meeting you out amongst the stars.

Flying happily

Currently tweaking the T6 and I am in doubt. It's a big boat and not too sure about the cockpit. I'll have a run in it anyway. I am programming a couple of tools to get data from the players journal (see above) and I am missing sample data on a couple of exotics like Supergiants and Carbon stars. See if I can use the T6 to visit some known ones.

I am tempted by the Imperial Courier, but that would require ranking up at the Empire. No problem, I don't mind swapping game modes a couple of times.

And a couple of snaps from the expedition:
