Confirming my role as an explorer

I really wanted to upgrade my Asp's FSD to grade 5 before I went out on my first long range missions. Sagittarius A is my destination. My grade 4 upgrade rolls were pretty bad. I maxed out every negative and got a 38% boost to my jump range. Which is good, don't get me wrong but it'd be nice to not have every other stat maxed in the negative. So I wanted to try for grade 5. I was not prepared. Chemical manipulators? Yeah. I just got killed in my Python by a Type 9 (go ahead and laugh, I did). Confirming I am a horrible, horrible combat pilot in this game. (though I'm very good in SC, not sure what the difference is). Have yet to find a single arsenic despite hours of searching a planet with 2.6% arsenic and after 2-3 hours looking for the chemical manipulators I only have 3. So, after the 3.7 million kick to the pride I'm getting back in my Asp to do what I enjoy and am good at: Exploring.

I hope to join the rank of Elite's soon (17% into Ranger) and join the Sagittarius A visitor's club. :)

Wish they allowed trading of Mats...I'm having to just leave chemical manipulators adrift in space...but I do love killing refugees. You are welcome to come root through my debris fields if ya want? send me a PM.

I would point out that FSD engineering is not strictly necessary if you're just heading to the Core and back again. You really only need an engineered FSD if you're needing to go long distances quickly or you're wanting to explore the Outer Fringe of the galaxy.

This from the point of view of someone who does have a moderately Level-5 engineered FSD in an Asp (41 LY route-plotted max jump range, 45 LY theoretical max, about 180 LY max for a neutron-superjuiced jump) and is slowly working their way back from visiting the Core.

Very true, been most of the way to the core in an un-engineered Python with a 17ly jump range, only turned back after the last proper beta when they introduced SFL's. I am on my way back to the bubble to buy a Keelback and equip it with a SLF, not sure if I will bother engineering FSD and thrusters yet, not a big priority. Then after ticking a few boxes I am off into the black again.

My un-Engineered Asp gets about 30LY and some change, and it hasn't been a problem. If you go where the stars are thin then yes, longer range is better.
