So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

Lol, no worries ;)
Yea I also didn't get enough sleep, late night, couldn't sleep in too much + low blood sugars during the night didn't help :p .......... I think we'll all be falling asleep at the helm searching planets later on! ;)
.
Re Latitude & Longitude, I can never remember which is which
.
I had to Google it (Wiki),
Latitude = lines parallel to the equator, the equator being 0°, the poles being 90°
Longitude = lines going from pole to pole, The longitude of other places is measured as the angle east or west from the Prime Meridian (Greenwich,UK for Earth), ranging from 0° at the Prime Meridian to +180° eastward and −180° westward
.
What I don't get is how the prime meridian is chosen for other planets, but regardless, does the surface map show it? Or do we just find it flying around in SC?

I'm on the planet searching in the big impact craters that the planet has. Tried to use supercruise at 20 km around the craters with no luck, then used normal space at 4 km whit the external camera whit no luck as well.

I just use the Jimmy Buffett song "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" to remind me. :D

Who? Sorry I don't know him ;)
I've read which is which may times over the years, but I never remember! I need some sort of rhyme, like we do for scoopable stars (Oh Be A Fine Girl Kiss Me) ;)

With :p
.
For the big planets especially, we do need a co-ordinated grid search, wasn't Sterlino doing it with a table? I can't find it atm......

Just to Clarify you cannot search for these settlements like a normal POI. they do not show on the radar. they can ONLY be eyeballed from around 4-5km at most.. unless you have a super high def monitor then expect to look out for little xmas tree or Y shaped settlements.

Finding anything on a planetary surface in Elite: Dangerous is a laborious task. I've never found so much as a fumarole without the help of a tourist beacon. We need better tools. Not just for this particular search but in general.

Exactly. We've been having a bit of a discussion on this topic on the Canonn thread & there seems to be general agreement but some concerns that it could make searching too easy if not properly balanced, however I think some of the recent suggestions have that covered. How do we get FD to listen to us?

Force devs to stare at barren landscapes for 40 hours looking for settlements. No need to suggest anything.

I changed my settings so it would be more easy to spot the base. I know what to look for. Tested in the 2 known bases and i could spot them at 10 km, that's why i'm looking at 4 km to be safe.

well i been out here now 5 days on RA-G i have spent in excess of 50 hours scanning. nothing so far.

At 8-10 km high I can spot my ship's shadow/shape easily, a base should 2-3 times larger - so if I happen to fly above it, I'll spot it. At only 4-5kms high, the field of view is relatively small.

I spent about 2 hours near the equator searching the remaining unfound base at the Gap, found only a normal human POI (which was an event itself, haven't seen any since months).

Had a System Defence Force POI on the planet.

I spotted Delta in Gap from 10km as black spot, not much different than hundred of others I checked for 4 days, but hey, this was what I came to do so I did fly down to check it as well and bingo :). But my terrain setting were changed to mix of low and medium for that. You can go for all low, but this makes your work very boring as all looks like sea of pinkish pudding, so I set all up so I could get some false positive to keep me entertained :)

To improve exploration mechanics? Good luck, some of us have been trying for 2 years! Though more people have started noticing the last few months, but if anything big happens before we can Walk around on the surface / get Atmospheric Landings (delete as applicable depending on which comes first ;)) I'll be amazed.

Oh yeah just trying to let people know they cant come here expecting to find a blue circle for the settlements like a POI. As that will be a false reading as its turned off for them.

I know what it is in theory, I just can't use it in game and get confused about where I should be flying!

Search made "easy"

Get to the north pole - top coordinate (latitude) on your hud should be 90° (-90° for south pole), the second coordinate does not matter to get there. Just turn your ship to bearing 0 (compas on top of your hud) and fly (normal, sc, glide, does not matter) till you get to 90° - you are at the north pole.

Then pick up any number you like on the bottom coordinate (thats longitude -180° to 180°) , this is the one you will be searching along and you need to stick to it, turn your ship towards south pole (bearing 180 in the middle top of your hud) and just go. Make sure your bearing is 180 and the bottom coordinate is what you selected (so let say you picked up longitude -57°, on the bottom part it should say -57°, if you move away from it to check something, then just come back)

Bum! after 6 hours you arrived at the south pole (top coordinate -90°) , then pick up another longitude ie.135° , turn your ship to bearing 0 and you go for the north pole along 135° - another 6 hours :)

Getting to any pole, pick up any longitude you like, especially choose day or night, depends whats better for you.

This is how I did find Delta site anyway :)
