A question for throttle users...

I've been wondering how things work with a throttle controller and when the game does something to the speed of the spaceship.

For example, there you are pootling along at full speed on the throttle and 'something' happens that alters your speed. This could be, for example, the new landing gear speed limit. Or it could be something as simple as pressing a key on the keyboard or issuing a VoiceAttack command to set your speed.

So, my question is...what happens to the speed setting of full on the throttle controller? As far as it's concerned, you are at full speed but the game thinks you are at 50% speed.

Does nothing happen until you move the controller, at which point, the speed is set to what you have physically set the throttle?

Ok, I'm not sure if I'm explaining this very well, but hopefully well enough to get my question across.

without testing (now off to bed)

landing gear lowers your top speed, not adjusts your throttle setting.

I will guess that if you alter your throttle by any other means it will change to the new setting until you move your joystick/hotas throttle

Assuming I understand your question correctly, if you have the throttle set to 100% speed and 'something' happens to decrease this, if you leave the throttle at 100%, you'll just start to speed up again to the maximum speed possible, or when 'something' has passed.

e.g. deploy cargo scoop = lowers actual speed, but still 100% throttle set, put the scoop away, and speed climbs again to max' speed.

I hope that answers your question!

Bootsock is right.

Your throttle, if set at 100%, will remain so - and when your speed penalty is removed, you'll go back to full speed.

I wish there was some way of having your throttle itself roll back to your new maximum speed through force feedback or something :) Unfortunately, the X52 just stays put :)

I wish the X52 throttle had a detent at the 50% mark. It'd be much easier to find the zero setting (in full mode) when kicking flight assist off.

Oh well. :(

Well the detent is essentially a cam, isn't it? I'm not taking mine apart quite yet, but it should be possible to either add a detent, or move one (or both).

Hmm - maybe a project for the weekend.

Ooh a little google later - and found this. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=115981

Moving those two throttle nubs and adding one in the middle section should have the desired effect.

If you alter the game's throttle setting by a key press (which VA will do behind the scenes, of course) then the new setting is sticky; the physical throttle has to be moved before it registers again. It now works as it should, IMO, both in FAOFF and FAON.

If your physical throttle is at 50%, and your ingame throttle is 100%. AS soon as you touch your physical controller it will go to 51%

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks for the replies.

Another question, leading from some of the replies, is do you set the throttle up as 0-100 across its full travel and have a button for selecting reverse thrust or do you have a zero position with reverse thrust being below that point?

I'm guessing that would be a personal preference thing if E: D supports the option.

I have mine set to 0-100 and use a separate button for reverse throttle. I did try the other method with zero in the middle but it was too easy to accidentally go into reverse. :)

Full range (i.e. pull back for reverse) is much more usable if your throttle provides feedback, through a physical detent or through scripted audio, at zero.
