[PSA] For those using oculus rift and are aware of internet security, please take a look on this tweet.

Interesting.

With the design of the camera it's also extremely difficult to tell if it's on. Like you have to be looking for it to know. You wouldn't just happen to notice it.

The best advice to give is to cover the sensor when it is not in use.....if anyone is concerned.

Mine stays unplugged when I'm not using it. Same as my Kinect.

COMSEC, people. Best not to be fighting with your wife over finances, discussing personal issues, or doing the dirty-nasty in front of these cameras. ESPECIALLY with with people who make their fortunes by collecting as much as they can about your personal life, like ole Suckerberg

I'm sure it's fine, it's not like the Rift is produced by a horribly unscrupulous company desperate to invade your privacy as much as possible or something. Oh, wait.

When I read 1984 I used to wonder how on earth people would ever accept having constant surveillance in their homes without the government mandating it upon pain of death.
Oh yeah! Sell it to people!
Only people like Zuckerberg can take as the message from dystopian images of the future: what a fantastic way to get filthy rich!

The problem is that not everyone knows that the sensor is a camera and capable to capture such "high" quality image.
For vive, everyone knows there is a camera at the front. They will unplug the hmd when it is not in use.

And it is a well-known fact that facebook collects data from oculus rift.

This is why I don't use Facebook and all that crap. The amount of data about a person that can be gleaned from that:
If the Government mandated you to tell them all that every day there'd be riots on the streets!
Sell it to someone as a product and it's suddenly OK. I trust corporations as much as I trust politicians, royalty and the occupants of Wandsworth prison.

You guys are forgetting the general complacency and dont give a attitude most people have to technology.

There are still LOTS of people who have a attitude to privacy similar to "well I've got nothing to hide, and I don't break the law so why should I care about got surveillance "

Just thinking if i hack the oculus sensor, then record the video of you and your wife having some FUN time.
Place it to the internet (well you know what it is) and earn a lot of money.

Once there is some incentive for money, the hacker will do anything.

Also note that many people place their computer and rift next to their bed.

If I had an OR, or a computer that could use it for that matter, anyone watching the camera will likely just see my cat zooming about.

Nearly all phones have 2 high resolution cameras, with no way to know they're recording, so adding another one somewhere else doesn't really make much difference.

The TrackIR is a fairly low resolution camera, it's only meant to pick up the lit LEDs and nothing else so I'm not too worried about that. On the other hand, a high res camera hooked up to a service run by a company whose business model is to find out as much as it can about you...

Oculus say its sensor and most people don't know what sensor really mean, in many chases like this it mean same as camera. They should at least mention that its camera that can record view able material. When people buy laptop or phones those products say they have camera and you can easily check the image by yourself, but with these oculus sensor/camera regular consumer most likely won't know it can film him as its not obvious from store page/ product information or when using it..
