Like everyone else I guess, I got a tip off mission to go to a location to scan wreckage (ha!) on a planet a 100 ly away for an insurance company. The job was to be completed in an unrevealed but limited time, for an unknown reward. Should I go. Let me think….. Perhaps like delivery missions, I will just be landing when I get told that the mission has now moved to the opposite side of the galaxy.
More seriously, how long do you normally get. Or am I missing the exciting immersive gameplay aspect.

I'm not sure how long you get - but there was enough time, and I didn't get redirected... the payout was more-or-less worth the time, and the missions were kind of interesting. Should you go? worth it for the novelty value I suppose - and at least you won't be left lying awake wondering what might have been... ;)

(Disclaimer: I've done a grand total of two of these missions, one was to a wrecked ship, the other to a base which tried to kill me, so...)

I had lots of these missions but didn't have time to complete them. Hope someone who completed tip off missions shares more information here. I really would like to know what is tip off missions.

I've done 10 or 12 tip off missions. In some cases I waited a few days before doing them and they still worked. I guess you have at least 5 days to finish them, maybe longer. Most paid very good 1,000,000+ cr. Some paid ok but not spectacular. One mission was bugged (Mant system). IIRC that is the mission where you find a base that tries to kill you but there is nothing to scan at or near the base.

So far the missions (both of them!) involved flying to coordinates on a given planet and scanning a data point of various types (one was in a wrecked ship, the other in a base).

If you really want to know, do one of them! ;)

Thanks to all for the responses. The mission said 'hurry!', which I guess is an indicator of the time, so I may not bother.

Do you not get to read the data core contents any more? I've had a couple of Tip Offs (Athena A2, and I can't remember the other) and on scanning the data core, I don't get any additional info. (I do get the data package claim though).

You get a few days, maybe a week. But be advised that currently many of these Tip Off missions are bugged, and will send you to a location that does not have a crashed ship to scan, or in some cases they specify a location that doesn't even exist.

I used to enjoy these, when they worked, but flying out there just to discover it's bugged has caused me to stop doing them until it's fixed.

Did my first "Tip Off" mission yesterday, actually found the ship and located and selected the ships' Data Core from my SRV, but nothing happened.

Not sure what else I was supposed to do so I picked up the cargo laying around and left.

I went to the system and crash site almost straight away, so I should have been in the time window it was at Athena A2 - might be bugged I see.

Any suggestions regarding other actions to take at the site?

I had a tipoff but I think my ship was destroyed after doing stuff.
I have 4 tipoff missions in my list that I have not responded to. Got to much to do with starting a clean Python.

You have to scan the Data Core with the data link scanner in the SRV (bound to fire button 2 by default IIRC). Works best if you switch to turret view.

wow, i assume these took a major nerf with the last patch?

got the tip-off from a completed mission, it promised to compensate me, in the past that meant somewhere from 1 mil to 2 mil

fought off 4 attackers, major damage to my 'conda but i survived and carried on - 350k in repairs, but it will be worth it i'm sure

argh! 3g world. i know it was 3g, because i read it on the hud while my ship was rolling sideways down a hill. no damage luckily, one ring left

success! i locate the wreck, scan it and return home to claim my millions.

22k. i read it again. still 22k. TWENTY TWO KAY - i risked my life and wasted 2 hours for some recty's lunch money.

nice troll, FD. you got me.

I did one of these and it was not worth the effort. The message was misleading because the planet wasn't in the system the message gave, so double the travel. I ignore them.

I read about the payouts and they are pretty paltry, you can make more money running missions and collecting the bounties on the ships that interdict you in much less time and travel.

Only ever had two such missions offered to me. Couldn't take the first one - RL. But did do the second and really enjoyed it. Wish there would be a few more. Take it I say - you might be pleasantly surprised.

Hi, Rrobes. I have 4 tip offs and was hoping we could do them together. Doesn't matter though.

I wonder if I can tell another player the tip off details and they can do the mission? It seems a waste tp throw 4 missions away if somebody likes doing them.

Some Tip Off-missions are obviously bugged. I got my first today: "Go to system x, planet x a1, land, and scan data core of crashed ship." There are two problems: I do not have Horizons, so: no landing! And the planet in question is an ice world, so even in Horizon, if I am informed correctly, it is not possible to land on it.

well that was a nice trolling. I was hoping it had something to do with being shot down by the new "Aliens" thing. Nah, just a chump change data package and some animal meat. I flew 400LY from my active zone for this? *sigh*
I think I made more money scan skimming the stars on the way here.

I've done one, they gave me 5 days to do it and it clearly said when it expired in the message. Mission was to go to planet xa1 at coordinates xx xx and scan something. Spent 4 hours getting there to the exact coordinates and trying to find what I was supposed to scan. was difficult due to high gravity, there were a few things to scan and some cargo on the ground, nothin valuable no real indication of what I needed to do or confirmation the mission was completed. Got about 12k for the scans, obviously missed something but have no idea what. Very very frustrating, complete waste of time with no reward, could have earned more in a res sight in 2 minutes. Definitely won't be bothering with these types of missions again

No - there's usually a rider on the description to say the encryption key has been added to your computer or something like that.....and you need that to be able to scan the beacon or whatever.
