Deep Recon X - Mind the Gap

Well they say it is the journey, not the destination. Unless being there quickly is most important. Not too many shots of the Corvette next to the Sag A black hole I'd imagine.

I'm on my way home now to the Reynes system from Sag A & Jacques. My first trip out there :)

No, but then there probably aren't a lot of commanders nuts enough to make trips of that sort in a Corvette either. At 18.02ly per jump, I'm not getting anywhere quickly, and with nearly 12,500 jumps behind me as of right now, I'm exactly that kind of nuts.

I had forgotten to ask, but when I start getting near the area of Hawkings Gap, what are some things I should be looking for? I'm researching the area and its histories as I travel, and I'm finding information, but what specifically should I be reading up on/looking out for? I knew little of the area prior to setting out last week, but I'm learning as I go.

Well, I'm due to set out tonight from Nganji, heading for MP1. Already set out once a couple of weeks back in my Anaconda and then turned back after the first meet up and swapped for the Asp Explorer. After spending the week out investigating the bases in Hawkins Gap, I've since returned to Nganji and have now prepped my new ship for departure. This must be a record.....3 different ships on the same expedition!

Here is a list of settlements and the info found in them

DATE: 26 January 3303
CODENAME: Mind the Gap
PROGRESS: Day 12

LOG ENTRY:
Only 12 days? Feels like months already. We are dispersed across the sector. Some are still in raspberry yogurt hell, searching Plaa Aec XZ-Z for the mysterious settlements. I personally have spent 30 or so hours scanning the surface for the slightest sign of technology, but without success. There are others who have spent longer. The Gap has claimed several victims already including the well known explorer Bongo Baggins and more recently Torrigwynt, both of whom have been safely returned to populated space in order to re-equip. We have various commanders either in the bubble or returning from the bubble, all hoping to rejoin the fleet at the first Muster Point.

Some of us are starting to make our way towards the Muster Point in preparation for Saturday's re-grouping. Our advance party, MissingSea, has already made landfall and will hopefully be scouting the area and getting the kettle on for our arrival over the coming days.

MESSAGE ENDS.

You know how long it takes to accurately survey one square kilometre? Well on this planet there are 144 million of them. Finding this settlement is less likely than winning the Euro lottery.

But on I search. I will find this thing.

... and your Avatar sums it up nicely :D

Maybe you could start with the Hawkins Gap Beta Settlement :p

Fly save o7

I didn't set out specifically with searching the Gap in mind, but I figured that since I would eventually be passing through the area I would lend my eyes and my time to the search. I'm doubtful I'll make any significant discoveries, as I can't even seem to be able to locate even a simple geyser, but I didn't think the searchers would mind a Corvette helping out as it slowly made its way to the core.

Safe travels, commanders.

Don't worry. I haven't seen a geyser, a fumerole or even a barnacle yet.
Well I have visited a barnacle, but I forgot to take an SRV [noob]

To gird up your loins, CMDRs, I give to you,
Henry the Five, 1st part of the 3rd bit, the Iconoclypse edit:

Once more unto the breach, strange but dear friends, once more;
Or close the docking slot up with our DRX dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a CMDR
As modest silliness and humidity:
But when the blast of alien scans blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the Eravatian swamp-tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the micro-g supplement-fortified blood,
Disguise fair nature with oft-favour'd saltiness;
Then lend the viewport a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the helmet
Like the plasma cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled asteroid
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Like those of storm-tossed Acamar.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height.
For frequent exercise is necessary to stay in shape in micro-G.
On, on, you noblest Pilots.
Whose blood is fet from progenitors of war-proof!
Yes! From the fiery crucible of the Dangerous Discussions itself!
Fathers, Mothers that, like so many Alexanders, so many Boudicas
Have in these parts fought like Geordies all damn day,
And sheathed their lightsabers for lack of argument
(Or when the System Authority Vessels arrive):
Dishonour not your progenitors' other extended family members; now attest
That those whom you call'd whatever you called those who did beget you.
Be copy now to pilots of grosser blood, like the idiot who shot at the Thargoids first,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman, aye, like Janice Rand,
Whose limbs were made in the south-western-ish part of the galaxy, show us here
The metal of your landing pad; let us swear
That you are worth some breeding, much, much breeding, I say!; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That DRX doth not consider you a shout fellow.
I see you stand like Tungusian redhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's a broken mess, if you believe some court jesters:
Drink your spirit then follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'Good for a laugh, Elite, and Saint David B!'

That's girded my Loins alright, and I'm not even there!

I have only seen them when other people have found them first and I have definitely been looking. In many, many places.

PROGRESS: Day 14

Muster Point 1: CPD-65 2513 AB 3 A
NGC 5315 (Qing Long Caverns)

Those in attendance:
JT442
Dell Tarrant
Twiggiervenus3
Brenfitz83
BongoBaggins
Dudge
MissingSea

SCIENCE:
The Caverns has been rumoured to have been destroyed following the 2.2 update. This waypoint was to investigate the geological state of the area. We are happy to report that the Caverns are intact.

Log Entry:

Surprise ship entry of the day - Cmdr Dell Tarrant with a Beluga.....

We managed to get seven of us together at a single location... pretty amazing given the poor navigational systems of the XBOX control interface. As per standard DRX protocol, much ing Around (TM) occurred. The usual SRV mayhem was prevalent, with CMDR MissingSea claiming the jump height record of 250m above a level surface. I managed to take a picture of him above my SLF...

CMDR Bongo Baggins led the next phase of hilarity with a cry of 'Follow me!'. He stopped at the kilometre deep chasm... most of us didn't. Sportingly, he also launched off the top for a spot of base-jumping..

Screenshot-Original.png

Surprisingly, we all survived and managed to get back up the sheer cliff face in a variety of ways. We lined up for a group photo next. Cmdr Dudge was so keen on lining up the perfect shot, he reversed his SRV off the cliff edge again, but this time did not survive the plummet.. he is currently en-route to the bubble to collect a new buggy...

Red Squadron, under the command of CMDR 'Backwards' Dudge will be heading towards
The Lighthouse

While Blue Squadron, under the guiding hand of Cmdr 'Follow me' Bongo Baggins will be making the long haul towards
Red Coral

A very fun and successful meet up at Muster Point 1. Everything went almost as expected...for a DRX commander get together.....So, for your viewing pleasure , some images of tonight's events.

Starting off with a brief glimpse of typical DRX shennanigans at a get together......or as we like to call it, 'in About' (tm)

And as JT mentioned in his previous post, yes, I did bring the Beluga....and this image explains exactly why. The stunning panoramic view from the bridge.

Epic pics guys and the clip with those two flying buggies was monumental!!!
Quite typical DRX meetup yeah :D

Fly save out there, I wouldn't want to meet up with you guys back in the bubble because of a rebuy!

I seriously had no idea that drop was there!! I'd just followed Bongo and Lost Legends up the hill, and then spun the SRV at the top, before trying to reverse into position ..... straight off the cliff edge! Bloody hilarious!
