Hello, I just recently started playing the Elite Dangerous Beta and I am having a hard time understanding the earn credits system as well as mining. So it starts you off with the pulse laser and 1000 credits. Can you mine with this laser or is it strictly for combat. And another question, I got my first 200 credit kill last night, Ya me, is this the only way to gather credits starting out until I progress to mining for credits? Thanks in advance.

Pretty much what Joe nose said. Trading and bounty hunting are the only ways (currently) to generate cash.
There are some trade route tools posted on the forums if you look - they'll help you out in finding a good run. Conflict zones, Federal Distress beacons, and resource extraction sites are great places to collect bounties.

I just started a week ago and can say that
Federal Distress beacons
are the best way of making credits while learning to fly. Just make sure you pick a side, or you get nothing.
Go to right menu screen, last tab, and pick a faction.
If you have not done so already, I highly recommend you do the single player scenarios first.

I'd suggest the extraction sites. Here you can try and pick on wanted federal fighters which might be the easiest fights. But you might also manage to scoop up some cargo other people drop. Scoop is raised and lowered the same way landing gear is then you get a new UI element to target the cargo and fly up under 40m/s. If you have cargo it is marked as stolen and you sell it in the black market from the contacts section. I did this once then had enough to buy a second laser and then fight with a bit more punch.

One last thing - at present there are no police forces or protection in PB2 so don't be discouraged if you get taken out - it's happened to us all.

And do not forget that you do not play the game, you test it. So do not invest in a strategy of game at the moment. You can lose everything in a few seconds now. And welcome to the great family of the Elite
You have to request permission to land. Look at the contacts panel i think it's (button 1)then move tab to the right (button E) then select the station and then select request docking. You have to be within 7.5km for them to accept.
