News 2.3 Dev Update

How about this? New player joins the game, you invite him to crew on your ship. He does nothing, just sits there, while you rack up a bunch of bounties in the local Haz RES. Newbie gets all the bounty money, also. Goes out and buys new ship with money he did nothing to get.

You can kick him from the ship as OP says.

Dunno, I sort miss buying a new shiny Asp, the sitting on my bum for what feels like hours while waiting for the missing NPC crewmembers to be available. Will that be a feature of Elite Dangerous as it was of Frontier - First Encounters?

Otherwise, looking forward to the beta test and the update!

:D S

So. I'm out 20,000ly from inhabited space after being out exploring in myy Anaconda. I've been out here for months now, with no contact with any fellow human being and.....hang on a minute. Who the hell are you...and YOU?

OK, I know it doesn't work exactly like that but I can see this really squashing the unique feeling of isolation and just how vast the galaxy is, if all of a sudden you can have commanders join you out in the void or alternatively you can nip back to Sol for a spot of ship bashing.

I know that this is player choice, but I can see many a player having been out alone for so long, nipping back and upon return..well, it just not seeming so lonely and the size of the galaxy suddenly seeming ever so slightly smaller. I know I'd regret making that decision to multi crew up for an hour.

That's such a good point and really crystallizes some of my own concern.

Player teleportation fundamentally would change the tone and feel of the game entirely [sad]

That sort of thing is so difficult to pin down in terms of circumscribed game mechanics, or features, or assets, and yet the intangible feel of a game, or any media really, can be the difference between it feeling somehow more than the sum total of it's parts & awe-inspiringly vast, and it being a sugar rush arcade game.

Please rethink teleportation FD!

It changes the nature of your game entirely.

Give us another bone FDev. What else do you have in the bag planned for v2.3? Obviously, multi-crew appears to be the ugly bride of this upcoming release per many expectations here; though, can u give us something coming that we will all love/enjoy...even if its a touch of spice?! I for one hope for further enhancements of station interiors to include moving avatars/people. Basically, "life" inside the station other than plants and the car traffic driving around the loop.

"" is no right way to consider someone's else opinion, or to voice it at least.
There are so many examples in ED that I can only really get caricatural. I'll restrain. Again, just have to play the game, it's the same as mine, to see that "No ETA future" is no excuse for shallow details. So many examples of "not going for it", which seemingly don't even require vast amounts of work.
They're not all that bad, nobody's dead, it's still a game.

But nice of you to show patience and to enjoy the placeholders (indefinitely). I wouldn't grow too sympathetic though.

You can just name one game who has this all and I will shut up :)

Well if players can instant travel to each other to get added benefits I would like an instant travel wing feature too...you know so that it is fair when piloting small ships.
Magic Instant ship transfer with pilot inside it? that would be horrible in my opinion.

Small ships are great , I love them. I dont like the big ones , the biggest ship I ever fly outside of trading is a FDL and from time to time I fly a eagle.

You can own anything with good skill.

However I do think smaller ships should get a few buffs that help them against the bigger ships (such as more speed)

Is just not the same. What are you supposed to do when you are trying to fill your ship with crewmembers, just wait in a station? what if you already have another member, but the third one is coming, should the two players wait? When you are in a wing you have full independence. You can play the game as freely as you want while you wait for the rest to meet you. In other words, wings don't limit your game in any way. But with multicrew is different. If you make it so that you need to meet, you limit your playtime to just waiting.

Also, what is being transferred in this case is only the avatar, not the ship. Once the crew is disbanded, you are back where you were on your ship. Instant transfer of ships for wings would totally brake the game. It would make the size of the galaxy meaningless!

This point is crucial when you have a full time job and/or a family. Try to make different schedule and timezones coincide. On another hand, I don't think "fair" is the right word. How can this difference be unfair? However, I do hope that, if legs arrive, then there will be a wait to multicrew the hardcore way.

Well.. there is a difference, though. Being able to 'Agent Smith' your way into crew that supposedly existed on the ship the whole time takes a bit of suspension of disbelief, yeah, but not more than what we have already with short range fighters being operated by tele-presence. The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks, imho. Then again I'm not totally married to the idea of having delays for ship and module transport either, although I supported that addition to the game.

I think with this there's a spectrum of players and to be honest I think this is the best COMPROMISE, both from an accessiblity point of view which enables gameplay, and a technical implementation point of view, where putting such barriers in place actually requires more work.

Some people want players to have to pick up and drop off at stations, others want agent smithing into other bodies, others just want to join and leave with no restrictions.

You are not going to please everyone but I think that this is fine, that dropping in/out on a whim is easily overlooked for the sake of gameplay just as the player insta-respawning many LY away on death is overlooked.

This all sounds good.

Apart from the magic teleportations.

Please FD can we have it so that to ''teleport'' we have two charecters? one who is our pilot and a hired pilot for the other? magic has no place in elite , unless you find a lore reason for it to be in.
Its not game-breaking like instant ship-transfer but its still a bit of a letdown to me.

or have it be instant as long as you are within a range (like a 100LY sphere)

But regardless of that gripe this is great news and I am very happy to see something like this.
It will flesh the game out and add new ways to play as a unit.

And I do feel that ''punishement'' is a bit low , but that seems to be part of the modern take on elite , so I will not whine (too much)

Hope that one day we will be able to play with our console friends (as long as that does not bring any nerfs to the PC version)

Anyway I very happy and looking forward to finding out what the side-features are (I tend to love those even more lol)

Thats never going to happen.
FD could fix all the bugs and cure cancer and many will be against it.

I like the sound of this update outside of magic teleportation and the lack of engineer role to control pipe and so on. but it sounds like this is going to be a very cool addition that might change the world for those who fly in the larger ships. and I can even see special multi-crew loadouts being present.

Don't have the patience to read the whole thread as on a first glance it looks like there's nothing new to expect for solo players.
Am I wrong?
Potential improvement to the external camera. A full 360 degree 3rd person-like camera if they decide to pass it on to everyone.

Other than that consider yourself lucky that you have no stake in what happens in Open. I think you'll be getting more visitors in Solo soon [yesnod]

Sounds great, however time will tell as the network issues with wings are bad enough, now we will be in the same ship. or ship launched fighter.

Multicrew is a "meh" content and is going to hard to balance it out.My question is what will we get beside it, what is the future improvements and which new ship will get it's turn to get in the game with 2.3!

Just an FYI for everyone, we won't be able to answer all the questions in the thread today, but there will be plenty of time in future to answer as many questions as possible...

...and there will be livestreams showing off the cool new stuff, too, of course!

Can't wait for those live streams.

Is not a full description of 2.3. Is just about the two already known headline features of it, about which you already knew when buying Horizons. You can consider 2.3 something for everyone though, including solo. And it was announced the addition of a new camera to actually see yourself.
