FOVE Headset Is Here!

Kickstarted 4 July 2015. Delivered twenty minutes ago. I didn't realize what it was, until I opened the box.

I won't be able to do anything with it for several hours (my editor has issued me a non-negotiable deadline), but I'll get this set up with E: D ASAP and have a review soon. May be this weekend before I can give it a full workout.

Really looking forward to testing the eye tracking. [up]

I have a Vive already. The FOVE can supposibly use the same base stations as the Vive, so that is an extra bonus.

Are you sure about that? As far as I know it comes with it's own camera for positional tracking and the tech specs even list "Position tracking camera"

Very interested what will be your findings, especially in the foveated eye tracking (though not sure if ED is required to support that feature though)!!

Great I cant wait I also use a Vive and would like to know your thoughts on a comparison with Elite Dangerous. Especially the resolution bump and tracking vs Vive.

This was my source:

Fove is today announcing that the company has received an undisclosed amount of funding from Samsung Ventures to further their eye-tracking VR headset, and additionally firms up their commitment to support Valve’s Lighthouse positional tracking technology.

Also, from their Kickstarter page:

You want Lighthouse! We want Lighthouse! We’ve already begun speaking with Valve to explore the possibilities. From our AMA on Reddit, to the comments on our Kickstarter, we’ve seen the demand for Lighthouse integration with FOVE explode, and it brings us great pleasure to reveal our plans to integrate with SteamVR.

If supported, The Lighthouse base stations and any additional controllers will be sold separately from the Kickstarter bundle.

With the integration of Lighthouse and the support of OpenVR, the potential for incredible virtual reality content is limitless! Can you imagine the possibilities?

They made that stretch goal. The lighthouse stations will be sold seperatly, but as I already have them the FOVE *should* (knocking on wood furiously) work on the Vive hardware. I'll be testing that this weekend.

Thanks for the source! That's interesting. So did they actually include both the photodiode sensors and IR leds in the headset because those two tracking technologies aren't compatible? Their website only mentions IR tracking. I guess we need to wait for ifixit to crack it open or someone with a vive and fove.

Did you get beta access to the Steam VR driver?

We are currently preparing SteamVR and OSVR drivers for the FOVE HMD. Hold tight just a little longer! We apologize for the delay. If you wish to sign up as a SteamVR beta tester, please fill out this form and we will send you your access key by email.
