Irregular users

I've been signed up from the start of Kickstarter and like the vast majority of those, I'm guessing I'm not alone with not having engaged with the community, simply because I have better/different/other things to do. If my own (snowboard) forum is anything to go by, forum activity represents less than 5% of "users". So, my question is...

What features (if that's the right word) are in place on Elite Dangerous for those people who can only dip in and out of the game on an irregular basis? What I'd hate is to have a game that's great that I can't come and play every few weeks when I have a spare evening.

You can play as much or as little as you want, but there's no elite faeries thats going to make it seem like you put hours a day in if you only play in small doses.

The more time invested the more progress you make.

something better than the elite forums?? :) I heard forums are about 10%-15% playerbase. They have become more popular as time goes by.

Do what a lot of us already do, come in, have a nose around at some of the systems and stations and simply enjoy the ambience.

Pop in, get griefed, pop out. I imagine that's how its gonna be given the people I've read about so far. you can't compete with those who have nothing better to do than play this for weeks and be so good you will get 'pwnd' mercilessly.

No reason you wouldn't be able to do that, in fact the non-sub model makes it very friendly to occasional players. If you're badly worried about being outclassed in equipment or skill, then the group and solo play options could be for you.

Good grief :( Oversensitive much?

You asked a question, I gave you my answer. I apologize. No trolling intended.

Ah, the beauty of the written word :) The troll comment was in response to the kids pwning me response.

I think the 'griefing' thing is getting blown out of proportion somewhat. I've logged about 5 days in game since Alpha 2.x, with 6 hours in the current beta, and I've only seen two mildly irritating things (ship camping the space station in the anarchy and a co-ordinated attack by people 'roleplaying' a situation on Team-speak that got me shot).

Not saying that some people aren't unlucky, but...

It's an open-ended game, so as long as you're not bothered that someone else has a shiny Anaconda, there's no problem.

At the risk of opening the cash4credits can o' worms, there almost certainly will be an ability to buy credits direct from Frontier (they said they'd likely do it, but that was a while ago). If there isn't, then you will be able to buy credits from somewhere like this. So if you find you can't be bothered to get up to the Cobra by playing the game, you can effectively buy one. The sale of accelerated starts (i.e. always being able to start with an Eagle or a Cobra) has been mooted on the forums (no official word on this though). As a KS, you may or may not already have an accelerated start.

I've not kept up with the state of mining. Given the general philosophy at FD of trying to avoid EVE-style play and also the need to avoid having to recall where millions of mining machines have been deployed, I'd guess that you won't be able to set a mining machine up to do its thing whilst you're AFK.

The fact that they're trying to keep the focus on the individual rather than effectively forcing membership of a clan/corporation means you can just dock, walk away and come back a few days later with no problems. Sure, you'll be poorer than the guy who's been flying 18 hours a day (if they're any good), but that shouldn't matter. If somehow it does, there's always online singleplayer.

Agree on that. I have played since start of PB and in that time I have had one occasion where I was attacked outside of a combat zone by another player and that was some muppet who thought it would work out well to take on a heavily armed Eagle in a starter SW (it wasn't a major inconvenience) Apart from that never been attacked inside or outside of a station or in one of the unidentified signal zones. Not saying it isn't happening, just not to me ?

I've spent far more time since Alpha finished making in game videos, rather than actually playing it.

Part if that is down to not having a quick and easy method for HUD less capturing, partly to taking my time with the videos, and partly for taking a bit of time in selecting what to film (for most of them anyway).

Mostly though, I want to get a feel for the game, but I want to retain that freshness for the full release.

Plus, I just enjoy exploring and seeing nice angles of stations or planets and what not. It's what I will probably do most with my limited time in the game also!

Some nice replies there. I was worried Frontier may have been taking too much on from the vocal few in the forums and forgotten about the busy majority.

I'm personally against credit buying.

It sort of tempts me to do an end of run Stargate Universe, set myself up on a huge jump and see where I end up a week later real time!

Now... just need to sort out a suitable Nvidia card to power my third monitor.

There's not a game centered goal, the galaxy is just out there, for everyone's use. Sure, iut'd be nice to be the first to have this ship or that weapon or jump into a certain system, but there's no end goal there, more just a goal that you set. And while the established players might be pushing the boundary of exploration, the systems they leave won't just shut down. Indeed, they might come back and wonder what they heck happened while they were gone.
