Pre Orders and Incentives?

When do you think pre orders will open, and what incentives would you like to see? Early access? Paint jobs? Special Digital Edition and season passes etc.

Not sure if it will ever happen.

Frontier publishes their own games to reduce costs.

But, once its there, there are probably special editions you can buy that will give you special cosmetic items. Or ingame currency.

A lifetime pass would be great but that is not the way Playstation works. Hundreds of season passes and updates at a cost. Actually I think that it works out well without the devs having to package and distribute another cd/dvd at great expense and the players get the upgrades at 1/3 or less of the cost for a new release. Even less if the game has poor sales but you like it! They still do it looking for those who never bought the game e.g. "Call of Duty - Infinite Warfare" being seriously pushed this Christmas. The good news is if a game is not to your liking then don't purchase the DLC! I just bought "Watch Dogs 2" without the DLC to see if I like it. Welcome to gaming 2016! :)

I hope that there will be early access!
Especially in light what Microsoft has started to do, switching to the PS4 edition makes perfect sense to me. The fact that the PS4 does have a specific flight stick is just added bonus. I never regret getting the XB1 edition (the only reason I bought an XB1 in the first place), having it on both systems is just top.

The unfortunate thing with PlayStation is that pretty much every time we see the digital vs physical releases the digital version is way, way more expensive. With ED pretty much guaranteed to be going to be digital only (although would Sony help make a physical release if Frontier wanted?).

Anyway assuming its digital only does this mean we will pay XB1 prices or will it be pumped higher? I guess I will be buying it no matter what and I would too pre-order today if I could. :)

I will be looking to find lots of you guys to play with as I am not sure many of my PS4 friends are even remotely interested. This forum seems really quiet unfortunately. I was reading with interest some of the comments on the Dev 2.3 notes and people almost lambasting the forthcoming PS4 release for the reason the game is being "dumbed" down (In those posters opinion of course with respect to multicrew). I really hope it doesn't get dumbed down just to appeal more. I have been constantly watching youtube streams of XB1 and PC gamers playing ED as this has to be my all time most anticipated games on the PS4 for me.

Frontier is publishing their own games, i think the prices will be on par with XboxOne and PC.

Personally i can't wait to welcome our PS4 brethren to the Galaxy of Elite Dangerous.

I can list a couple of reasons straight away which would make me think that ED will not go physical copy.

1) There are many examples of PSN only released games in the same genre (persistent MMO) which don't have a physical counterpart so it is not as if ED will be breaking any unwritten publishing rule.
2) A PS4 user will require an internet connection to run the game so running a disk offline is a non starter
3) ED doesn't come on disks for PC / MAC or Xbox
4) The cost of publishing disks, stock control, warehousing, distribution are all money sinks designed to get the game 'out there' and generate sales. I don't see ED needing to do too much of that. A PSN entry and (if required) an advert or two will reach a much larger audience these days.

The sooner that they give dates the better. Only having a low quality laptop at home, I get my gaming fix from PS4 and have been looking on enviously for some time now.

See Arne's post above. Frontier games are self-published now, and independent of need, Frontier wouldn't want the hassle of dealing with physical stock. It's the same reason why several SKUs of the books aren't available.

There's very little to be gained from physical distribution here. The only somewhat decent reason would be that Sony absolutely suck at networking and somehow manage to run all the PSN downloads at around 10% of the connection you put a PS on. (Like, seriously, when I was on 1.4MB/s, the PS4 would download at 150–200kB/s, now I'm on 20MB/s and it rarely exceeds 2…)

Totally agree, don't think its getting a physical release for all the reasons and the fact Frontier publish their own things as DustyArne pointed out. The point I was making is I hope we don't get penalised price wise. Hopefully not. Anyway, i'd love to see some pre-order goodies even if its just some nice paint jobs. :)

I keep checking for a preorder on PSN; one day soon it will be there.

Was there any sort of alpha/beta access with the XBox version? I have a slight hope that between preorder and owning the PC version, we might be able to get in a bit early :)

There was a "Preview Program" in June 2015, so 3-4 months before the actual October launch: https://www.frontier.co.uk/investor_relations/reports/news/?artid=505&pageNum=4&blk=275

I believe it was just 1 hour, and only the tutorial missions (from comments I recall, and this video).
Also it was essentially a discount on the main game. After that some people seem to say they got 100,000cr and a free Eagle, while others didn't. So not sure if what there was exactly, if any, bonus on that side.

Given Sony doesn't have a paid-for preview program, the best we may get is a beta, which is more a network stress test, a couple of months out?

Yeh, that would be nice. I guess it could be some of the tutorials. I guess it depends if they think the content they can release will encourage people to purchase. I am going to pre-order regardless so anything will be a bonus for me! :)

I didn't actually realise the price was already announced. £39.99 from newsletter #154. I want it. :)

The xbox gane preview program (gpp), did have a free one hour trial. I think it was the full game though, not just the tutorials. I may be wrong, it was a long time ago now! The one hour trial might even still be a thing on xbox, but someone who doesnt yet have it would have to confirm that.

The discounted price for the game while it was in gpp, was 5 quid cheaper than it was on full release, and anyone buying in the gpp period got the full release at no extra cost. We also got to start the game with 100,000 cr, rather than the standard 1000 cr you now get. The free eagle (freagle as it was known) wasn't part of the xbox gpp, but it was a preorder bonus on pc.

Looking forward to starting a new commander on ps4 and would be very nice if there were some preorder bonuses to start it off with.
