FOVE Unboxing & Somewhat Curtailed Review

Comment from FOVE Support:

Yes, as stated in the tech requirements on our website, we unfortunately don't support Windows 7 yet.

We are working on a beta for Windows 7, and we might be announcing it to a small group on our community at support.getfove.com. If you keep an eye on the forums, you'll hear when we launch the beta.

The initial tech specs did say "Windows" and changed at some point to Win 8.1 or 10. The blowback from Win7 users was enough to get them to run a special Beta for Win7. This change was noted in one of their update emails, but I never saw it.

[HJ]-RedRaven - The cables are lighter than the Vive, about eight feet long and tied with Velcro straps every 12-15". While lighter than the Vive cables, I wouldn't call them flimsy. I would say they were adequate for the task.

Got a friend with a Win10 box?

Hi commander. I believe win 7 vs win 10 is a whole other discussion. A review and test of the FOVE with ED is much more important than not having your favorite OS. I would install DOS 4.0 if I had to. That is me though...

So, my solution to you,
1. is to download the windows 10 iso file from somewhere. I believe MS are hosting them directly.
2. Partition your harddrive if you dont want to install Win 10 on your main OS drive.
3. Make a bootable USB drive with the Installation media windows tool.
4. Install win 10 in on the new portion of the drive.
5. Select "later" when asked for license key.
5b. If you dont want to pay, sign up for insider previews, the slow ring. This gives you a beta version of windows for "free" (you give them data and test out unfinished software).
6. Test out the FOVE and share your important findings with us fellow commanders! o7

Windows 10 is still free for people with valid Win7. I was hesitant to go ahead with Win10 upgrade at first but I'm so glad I did. It was quick(well not the downloading part) and flawless with 0 issues. All my software and games and hotas setup and VR all worked perfectly. As bonus I now no longer need to use my keyboard, which was a pain in the --- to have lying on my couch(my gaming Vr PC is in the living room). I simply use the on-screen keyboard now.

Do you mean the touch keyboard? is it working in VR? on what headset? :O

Well the on-screen touch keyboard (which works by mouse pointing) works in VR, but you cannot see it in your headset if that's what you are asking. I was able to do away an actual phisical keyboard becuase of that. Also, for in-game text chatting I now use voice attack and dictation.
But maybe, just maybe you maybe able to actuaslly see the on-screen keyboard in your hmd using the new V window some people are talking about, but not sure. If that worked that would be the best setup for sure but for now I am happy with my setup.
Maybe you should start another thread on this subject becuase this thread is suppose to be about the FOVE hmd.

My friends tend to be techies and few of them use W10 at home.

Understand your reasons. Data collection for marketing is all the thing nowadays. I used to be a techie too. Network server builds, primarily Win (I was in hardware distribution/sales for an Oz Intel distributor). Linux never got decent traction in games/GPU drivers etc so I never made the switch. Mac UI's bore me. Then I got old, and I can't be faffing about with it all any more. I still build my own PCs, water cooled etc. Win 7 worked. Win 10 works. I'm social media and marketing hardened, and so my internet footprint is quite low. Anyway, I digress. Apologies.

Personally I'm amazed - yet there is no review newer than November 2016 - you have a Fove unit - there must be others out there now. I thought there'd be several reputable sites with reviews published. Maybe my googling is lacking?
I'm with @paulkemp - I couldn't hold onto hardware like that and not give it a go. Partition, install Win10, Fove, review!
Hopefully Fove will issue the Win7-compatible goodness soon. Win7 still makes up nearly half of all (reporting in) PCs out there.

There's a lot more reasons than the ones you quoted. However, experience (on other forums) has taught me that the MS fanboys are no different than any others. Facts don't interest them. They own Win 10 so it has to be the best OS in the world by default and anything you say is disregarded automatically.

Check out this article: http://winaero.com/blog/stop-windows-10-spying-on-you-using-just-windows-firewall/

By no means is this everything, but it does list most of the MS sites (and their partner servers) where your info goes. It's a good starting point, but it goes much deeper.

To get a FOVE this early you had to back the Kickstarter. They are for general sale now, but the project was delayed a year and they probably didn't have spare units for press reviews. As a small company their resources are very limited and I'd bet the ones going out the door now are to generate needed income. Not a bad thing, certainly. However, I doubt you'll see proper main stream press review for a while for the FOVE.

Cant you install a dummy windows 10 installation while you wait for for the official win 7 drivers? Use a virtual machine, vmwarte lets you use their software for free. Just to test it out. You can block the machines internet access, and copy from your win 7 files if you want.

Really curious here too about the FOVE (not many people have one yet), esp. eye tracking and I reckon it's the next big VR step - maybe along with integrated AR.
I'm guessing it has to be written specifically in game, to get the benefits of rendering savings, or does the FOVE do it automatically? It's really hard to google that question and get any meaningful data back.

seems to me if you went ahead and spent money on a VR headset - the latest in tech, you should also consider the latest in OS :/ makes sense yeh? I installed windows 10 on release day and never regretted it, not one problem and everything runs as good if not better. Bite the bullet, upgrade and get your VR working.

Shadragon on the subject of constant "Windows 10" de-railments to both FOVE and linux port threads ...

LOL. Thanks, I needed that. Commenting isn't an issue. Spending hours putting together a comprehensive post with multiple sources only to have people say "That' isn't true!" without actually reading the material is why I restrain myself. I'm sure their privacy will be safeguarded by the effective combo of a selfless Microsoft and the Trump administration.

On the actual thread subject: I got an email this morning asking me if I wanted to participate in the FOVE Win 7 Alpha, which I immediately signed up for. I'm also on the path to virtualize my Win 7 install and place it on a new Linux based PC I'm going to put together. Still waiting on the majority of companies to get their AM4 Mobo stats out so I can make up my mind which way to go hardware wise. The MSI X370 XPower Gaming Titanium is the best out right now, but there are few competitor boards and ASUS is my usual go to manufacturer for mobo's. ASUS had an event yesterday outlining their new boards, but info is light and there are no independent reviews out yet.

Personnally I don't give a crap about data collection, as long as I'm able to play my game in VR!

What will you do when you have no choice on that matter, stop using PC's altogether??

Tell you what, how much are you willing to sell your FOVE to me and I'll take over for you?

Good that you got the win 7 beta FOVE sign up and are soon done virtualizing your win 7 box on linux...

Untill then, can you install win 10 on a VM wo network drivers (no data collection) and faux hardware and test out what the FOVE does? ;)

I was thinking of setting up a dual boot on my system so i could use W10 when/if needed until i read that it shows adds in your start menu and fullscreen adds during idle..no way in hell im using that OS..adds are an absolute deal breaker..nothing good comes from add services.

I have been running win 10 for months, and have yet to see an add.

Granted I haven't ever opened the windows store or made a windows store account.
