Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: Swoop 'n' Scoop (7th - 9th February) midweek madness

That's it, enough attempts for today!
5 insurance claims (6 total), partially as a way to get back to the start line faster in case of ridiculously annoying piloting errors :D
Thoughts: crashed into surface, forgot recording, bad OC, too fast for OC, too shallow for OC, overshot base/crash site in OC, slow run, no cargo canisters, got stuck while scooping, long OC drop, crashed too fast for OC, bad OC, forgot recording, slow run, forgot to come back into game in time after jumping to OC, crash, ...
All in all around 20 attempts with only three of them being faster than my previous record...
Still a lot of fun and one run finally was sub-5mins. It's joker time! :p

Race analysis to follow tomorrow or so (If I don't spend the whole day with preparing for that beloved upcoming math exam :().
Videos of my runs should be uploading now.
I'm thrilled for the results :)

Well first race of the year is over!!

I had a nightmare few runs tonight so sadly my dreadful recon run turned out to be my best attempt :(

Thanks to furrycat for organising and for finding such a fine course.
As always great to see so many racers (and quite a few unsuspecting spectators :))

Even learned a new skill - needs a lot of practice before the next Swoop 'n' Scoop.

Waiting for the final results in anticipation ...

Oh god, cookiehole, someone I greatly admire and respect (congrats on the sub-5 run) is gonna turn out to be at least half my age!

The final standings and cookiehole managed to regain the lead by a few seconds and played the joker card just to make sure:

Regular racers Markzxr59, Cheetah, Polar Bruski and <-LightSpeed-> also managed to submit runs, as did becoming-regular MrDragonRaaar. Unfortunately as you all found out this course isn't one where you just pitch up and challenge the leaders without putting in a few practice attempts first, so with limited time to devote to racing most of the new entrants found the going tough.

The distance stats for this race are skewed due to the race-o-matic being set up to handle system-to-system races and thus treating the distances between each waypoint as zero. Nonetheless we can draw some conclusions.

Practice makes perfect! Winner cookiehole submitted the most entries, with runner-up Aken B. and third place Samwell Drakhyr also improving during the event.

The most popular ships were the Imperial Courier and Viper Mk III.

Most people favoured starting at Forward Horizons.

However, opposite route was faster on average.

Interest in the race improved as time went on, people completed their practice runs and submitted official entries.

Thanks for racing, everyone!

Thanks for a great race furrycat! Fun, educational and interesting statistics as usual!

I considered playing the joker, but Dirigentes Stella really lived up to her name. I wouldn't have gained many seconds.

P.s Sorry about the paint

<general awesomeness and copious graph porn>

Phwoooar! Check out those graphs!

Thanks to furrycat for hosting the first race of 3303 and what a brilliant race it was too. With Buckyball Racing now in its third glorious year, the fact that we're still getting brand new race concepts and opportunities to learn new ways of pushing the envelope is just wonderful.

To the winners (and especially those bold enough to go for the joker), well done. And as for cookiehole, I figured I'd just save myself some trouble this year and have made a special re-useable rubber stamp ...

Can I just say ... you now have the best avatar on the forum!

Thanks to furrycat :) Clever little race idea.

I really struggled with that damn cargo scooping lol. But a handful of times it just worked and I managed a reasonable time.

Nice seeing you all out there.

Thanks for hosting another great race, furrycat. Even though I had the slowest time by far, I still feel that I've learned something. Too bad the race didn't continue through the weekend.

Congratulations to Cookiehole for winning yet again (not unexpectedly :)).

See? He's younger than many of us, because of this he has far better reflexes, he's more focused, he's not better than us, if we still were the same age as him we'd have showed him how it's done. Or probably not. :p
I think I'll shamelessly steal your stamp:

And congrats for furrycat for making the first race of the year into a very fine one! Ground-scooping is a thing I didn't even imagine I could have added to my racer resume. ;)

And now if someone is interested in watching how a great time is done, here's my run for you to....have something to watch while cookiehole prepares to show how a great time is done. :D

congrats to cookiehole on a stunning time and furrycat for a brilliant race. special shout to Drak for a cracking return performance.

as ever a seemingly simple proposition, fly from here - pick up this - fly to there, is actually loaded with piloting subtleties. really glad i made the effort to get back for it.

i'm of to scroll through Alec's Assets thread in anticipation of Tunnel Vision.

fly fast!

Bah! Beaten to 4th place by a whisker :D

The plucky little 'Winder did good though, and the race concept was lots of fun! I'm not sure it was envisaged that SRVs would end up not being used, but I knew it was possible with a small ship to scoop them from the ground. Not sure what the various bystanders thought about a Chrome Sidey unexpectedly smashing into the ground in front of them, or swooping in to nab the canister they were going for in their SRV, and then running away... But I'm sure it brought some excitement to their day :D

Well done everyone, and Congrats to Cookiehole (again) o7

I'm not sure it was envisaged that SRVs would end up not being used

The concept was that they wouldn't be. When I pitched up in the Catvette to test the course and found that I couldn't target them I was forced to add the SRV stuff. I'm glad most people ended up running the race the way it was intended.

Did anyone else get lucky with the cargo spawned mid-air and just hover there? I had several runs with no cargo spawned as well.

It didn't happen on my best run. The one time it did happen to me on a decent run, I thought I'd scooped it and was back in SC before I realised I hadn't lol.

Congratulations to cookiehole o7
Sorry I didn't get back from the Conflux in time for this (still a little way out but hope to return tonight). Well done to furrycat for a great idea and turning it into a successful event!

Congrats to cookiehole!!

Congrats also to Aken and Drakhyr on a great podium. Soooo close!!

I thought sub-6 min run would win it but it took a sub-5!!

I've learned that in Midweek Madness you just don't have the time to mess about :)
I spent too long convinced I could bump and scoop fast enough in the Asp.
With the medium pads at the front at Forward Horizons I thought it would save vital time.

I had the mid-air/no cargo spawning a few times as well. Especially on the last day.
When I was practice scooping there were a few times that I scooped and got the "Cargo Acquired" message but it wasn't in cargo hold.

I suspect Frontier didn't expect a crashed ship to be abused in such a manner :)
