Considering moving to Windows 10 from Windows 7 - better for ED?

Only advantage I can see is DX12 support but does ED actually use DX12 features to improve game performance or is it still DX11?

Any other benefits to ED I should know about?

There's no significant advantage to Win10 over Win7 in terms of DX11 performance. There's a new feature releasing soon which will enable you to put Win10 into some kind of "game mode," but details on that are somewhat thin on the ground, and I doubt it will offer significant performance improvements on a high-end machine.

The only thing you definitely need windows 10 for is DX12, which E:D doesn't use.

Other than that, Win10 boots a lot quicker than 7 on an SSD.

Is it any better for VR? I prefer Windows 7 because I know how to work everything, but if 10 has some built-in witchcraft that would make ED work even better in VR then I could be persuaded to upgrade. My IT buddy told me to stay away from 10 because reasons.

It has built-in witchcraft alright.
Your IT buddy gives good advice.

I also still use an iPhone 4S with iOS 7.1, and my TV is only 1080P, not 4K. So yeah, apparently I'm old-school. If it ain't broke don't upgrade.

I think his IT buddy doesn't know what he is talking about. There is no reason to stay with 7 but plenty of reasons to go to 10. Better security, better compatibility, less people slowing progress down, new features, etc.

He knows me well enough to know that I'd probably hate some key aspect of it. Besides, Microsoft spent months trying to push Windows 10 on me, and I don't respond to that kind of advertising.

Every company tries to push updates. Ever got asked by Adobe if you'd like to update your reader? These updates are essential for a product, I've seen so many outdated computers and the related problems, it always hurts me when people want to live in the past ;)

The auto update functions are actually the best thing that could happen to users. If you don't know how to disable them you aren't supposed to decide about it, at least not if your machine is connected to the internet ;)

ED is DX11 and all other things being equal, I cannot tell the difference in ED (or much of anything else) between Windows 7 and Windows 10.

The simple fact that Windows 10 is no longer free and has even the barest of learning curves would more than trump it's marginal advances in most areas for a great many people. If you actively don't like some of the changes and don't need DX12, there is really very little reason to move to 10.

What kind of lunatic would use Adobe's (PDF) reader long enough for it to want to update?

It hurts me when people throw away perfectly good technology every time the next shiny bauble comes along.

I have relatives that get a new smartphone every few months, whereas I've had mine for 5 years and it still works perfectly. I see no reason to upgrade unless stuff flat-out stops working on Windows 7. Besides, my gaming computer is only 1.5 years old, as are the three TITAN X cards inside it. Could I replace them with TITAN X Pascals? Sure, but why?

Nothing wrong with using Windows 7 if you don't want the forced updates of Windows 10 even though you have them turned off.

Windows10 is fine for me though despite the woes of the anniversary edition it does seem more intuitive in some areas and uses much less resources than Windows 7. If you want to use the latest wizardry with dx11/12 then go for Win10, otherwise Win7 will do the job.

Well the TXP is considerably faster than the previous Titan X. Windows 10, functionality wise, isn't that much different from Windows 7...unless you need DX12.

I didn't notice any difference in the two.

Admittedly, I'm using old hardware, and a standard HDD. Lol

Boot time is generally quicker, but other than that. It's all good.

I still use windows 7 also. Still works fine. No need to upgrade at this time. If you feel you want to try something new, by all means do it. But don't do it just to " keep up with the Jones's ". The industry is set up to always make something new. It is not necessary to always chase new tech.
