A Final Plea to Frontier for Longer Hairstyles

Whatever anyone may think of the thread topic, the guy from the talky on the intertubes last night said he would pass the request from the OP on to the guys and gals who bash the keyboards and make the game come out on our screens.

This happened, and the intertube guy came back and said long flowing hair was out of the question because technical reasons, but updos, ponytails and buns that necessitate long hair being present is something the keyboard bashers would like to incorporate.

I get the feeling this will be satisfactory for the OP.

You can role-play getting captured by the Thargoids who cut your hair for some weird experiments. You're so outraged that you decided to shoot every Thargoid ship on sight, sparking the war between the two species.

I'd suggest posting some pics of hair styles wanted. How long are we talking here??
Already done that:

Not really since in real life there would actually not really be a huge amount of bulk for shoulder length hair to be stuffed up inside a helmet's skull cap. Thus there would not need to be two models made in game, just the longer hair one. The helmet look would not be any different to any other character for the aforementioned real life reason.

And model design-wise, sure it would a bit of extra work to get a longer hair model to not clip and look good but it wouldn't require massive amounts of works for say something the length of this:

It's doable, especially just to add one initial version like the example above.

Ok, here's one for the naysayers saying that shoulder length hair and space helmets don't mix:

Exhibit A: Commander Lewis from the film The Martian

And now Commander Lewis wearing a skull cap as part of her helmet:

Notice how through the wonders of grooming and science she is perfectly able to wear a skull tight cap and helmet without dying in the name of fashion :)

Really? This is our new controversy?

I demand instant hair!
Not really a controversy. The OP wanted to post her thoughts across to FD and most people are of the opinion, "sure, why not."

A couple people have just felt the unecesary need to stick around vocalising a sense of butt hurt via osmosis of differing opinions and thus have made a drama out of it. As per usual on these forums you can't post an opinion without someone making a faux drama out of it for the purposes of boredom/attention seeking/trolling/lack of a real life social life/smurfs/aliens/bananas <insert whichever applies>

And that's a terrible mistake, right there!
The guys want a bob too! :D

What about a longer beard?
Just a little? :)

My beard goes down to almost my navel.... [yesnod]

Really!? Wow.

It could be that he just has a very very high navel.

Thanks for your response Ed. Like Jynessa Loraeyn, I'd heard that hair-raising story about the Final Fanasy movie. Keeping the hair short to keep the realism of the microgravity in the game is completely understandable.

And thanks to the OP as well... just look at the length of this thread!

Sir, you can mock me all you want, but Sir, I will not tolerate you talking bad about my Ed "Neo the Anomaly" Lewis! Take it back!

Disclaimer: I've not read every page, so my opinion may be void.

This is a Holo-Me depiction of your character. Zero-G is irrelevant. Helmets are irrelevant. Therefore any argument made about hair in helmets is null and void.

Can we have the real, technical reason why we can't have long hair now please?
Do you need it spelled out for you? I already pretty much explained it in my first post in this thread. I'm a programmer by trade myself and have dabbled in computer graphics back in school. It would take a single staff member 6-12 months of development time full time on nothing but hair to do this properly. Not to mention some time from the animator team. At around 60-90 grand a year, which is a modest salary for a programmer even capable of doing this, this is a 50-100 thousand fmdollar feature. They would have to dynamically model the movement of the hair, implement hit boxes for the face model to ensure the hair doesn't go straight through your face, make sure the hair responds to g forces from the ship moving, make sure it clips with the chair, clips with the shoulders and neck, add a completely new mechanism
For the hair getting sucked into the helmet when deploying helmet, test the hell out of the whole thing....yep, thinking now I think one year is more realistic than 6 months. All for a feature that 95% of the player base won't even use. Of course they Could take shortcuts and create static hair that doesn't move, and add some static animations for the hair moving out of the way when helmet deploys. Yes. Much less effort but than you'd have another thread on this bird from OP complaining and saying FD are "lazy" cause they didn't do long hair properly.

I was just trying placate the hardcore immersion people. I've been doing it since the 2.3 announcement dropped. :D

The main barrier I think you have is animating the hair. It looks like all the current models are static (I'm checking the stream), but the head can move dynamically. I'm not sure if FDev would be satisfied with clipping issues if there is no framework for animating hair, either to simulate gravity or acceleration changes.

It has nothing to do with immersion, it has EVERYTHING to do with model clipping. By "placating" you mean deriving your social currency from trolling the forums and straw-manning people.

We're still in Beta! If you can get a consensus of players, you may still get your wish. In the stream, it was repeatedly said that things can change.

I don't think a player consensus has anything to do with this.
It seems to me that even people who would never choose long hair for their avatars (like me) will have no objections at all against there being long hair options in the game.

I think the problem is simply that FD feels that it is too much of a hassle and I can see why that would be the case.

Still, at least we've found something new to argue about.

*SIGH*
Not really. Everybody agrees that commander creator is fantastic and for a change we all love the devs all of a sudden :)

This is a simple request thread. God knows why certain individuals decided to hijack it just to have some kind of arguement for the sake of having an argument. But that's these forums for you.
