Gunner = Arcade Action Cam for the 12 yr olds?

But the multicrew aspect is pretty trash.

I wouldn't say "trash", but the way it's currently implemented makes it very situational and somewhat limited in the grand scheme of things. I'm hoping further improvements made down the line will help flesh it out more and make it what it should be.

Simple. Those 160 ton A-rated sensors on my Vette are actually highly advanced holographic imaging units that recreate the space around my ship in a virtual reality environment.

Lol game design via democracy

Let me put it this way, I paid for development just like you and I find everything about this Cool and Good so I guess that evens out!
Hell, I not only payed for this game but for the Lifetime pass as well and I'm more than fine with these additions.[big grin]

I'm also a BETA TESTER for this funny non-sense. This will be the verdict... 1 cheap thrill of getting into the Gunner Seat first before the other player gets there. Then that's all there is to it. God-mode crap!

You said you weren't going to use it, so that doesn't affect you in any way.

I like the new gunner cam, looks like great fun!
I would like the option to man the turrets from their own camera's.
The millennium falcon moment was what i expected.

If my PC in 2017 can render something that doesn't even exist, my ship in 3303 can render something it can see from cameras and scanners, so there's no need for silly fake-holographic-thermal effects or whatever you're imagining.

And why are you so hung up on having a picture of a screen inside your monitor? Do you have no power of imagination? Just pretend your actual monitor, with the third-person view on it, is the screen inside your ship. Problem solved, everything is immersive you can stop worrying and enjoy the fun gameplay Frontier have been working on!

Sure, you can render things from cameras and scanners, but could you pick up visual information like what our eyes see from the thermal cameras that our sensors use?

The picture of the screen inside the monitor is important, both from the point of view of being able to interact with our fellow crew (you know, just like how FD want us to be able to with all the holo-me stuff), as well as for VR users. All the current game HUD is physically projected into 3D space, not just plastered onto a screen. From a VR point of view, the entirety of Elite is first person without any weird disembodiments or visualisations, which this new feature will completely throw out of the window. Keeping the ship interior in the background will also help keep VR users "grounded" and so help reduce motionsickness.

As a good example for how the whole turret view should look (and likely was intended to before they decided to simplify it to rush out the patch), you have to look no further than the official concept art for multicrew. (Shamelessly cross-posting from the 2.3 VS thread as Junky Juke brought the image to my attention)

See the giant holographic bubble around the turret operator?

How can it be the Galaxy Map if they do not get to Navigate? It must be the area of camera positions. I'm soooooooooo looking forward to laughing off my chair using this before it gets an UPDATE to be replaced. FD nerf all things (eventually)

Isn't that just the galaxy map?

It's quite hard to make out on the image so it might be, but either way both the galaxy map and the exterior turret view would basically require the same technology and implementation because of how they both require the full 360 degree view and don't have much to do with the real view from the cockpit.

At the end of the day you have to ask the question.
Is it fun?

I was never all that interested in multicrew, but during and after the livestream my views have changed dramatically.
It looks like a ton of fun. :D

ED gets crapped on a lot about the grind and being dull and lifeless, here we have something that looks and feels genuinely fun and enjoyable.

Kneejerk reactions over a single mode notwithstanding.
Isn't that what games are all about?

So you are going to use it then? You said you wouldn't.

Let me give you an example: In a movie, you expect when a person leaves the screen on the right side that it would appear after the cut on the left side. That`s a learned logic of how films work in general. If that doesn´t happen you might not really be able to put a finger on it, but it nudges on the back of your brain, and you might feel slightly irritated. Of course, editors use that in certain cases to make a movie more dramatic.

I think the same thing is happening in ED when certain rules are being ignored or put aside in favor of "fun-gameplay". Some (a lot?) players, get that uneasy feeling when the logic of the gameworld is compromised with certain (mostly new) additions which breaks ingame rules and therefore their fun is spoiled to some extent (some other compromises to gameplay have been accepted and are learned like instatransfer after death, etc.)

The solution would be for FD to find a compromise, where you still can have fun, but it won´t give you that nudge in the back of your brain.
In regard to the gunner view, it wouldnt hurt the fun, when you have a more holographic (however this is implemented - there were some nice ideas already mentioned in the thread) style of view, where you actually see a difference to the "normal/real" view of the universe. That would IMHO restore the immersion (still not solving the cmdr hologram transfers across the galaxy, but thats another story).

Someone else is having fun in this consentual PVP game, I demand their fun be removed. This one thing takes me out of the fantasy, but the fact I'm flying my ship by hand totally doesn't because

Its hard to fully judge without having a hands on. I wasn't super impressed with the turret approach, thought it would be more like millenim falcon, but depends. I have to say i sense the influence of consoles in some of this. Just stating a sentiment. I suppose they can add roles of features later on.

I loved the commander creator and new avatars (holome is a pants name though), . its cool to see people in the cockpit but I think thats a novelty that will quickly wear off. Multicrew could be fun I suppose, its not that appealing to me but perhaps it is to others. Opens up more ways to play and share experiences.

One of the things about ED is that its always been a much better experience to play it than watch it, will probably make for some cool vids and streams. I quite like the mentoring concept.

I do wonder what direction Frontier is headed next.
