Engineers To unlock engineers you have to engage in combat?

Wasn't sure whether to post this in the newcomers forum or here, but here we are.

I have recently upgraded to Horizons mainly for the planetary landings, but I was intrigued by engineers. I have an invite from the first one, but to get his attention I need to supply X number of combat bonds. Thing is, I am OK at combat, I made a couple of million Cr bounty hunting for seed money in order to buy a trader. I traded for a while in order to fit out an explorer, I am currently fitting out my explorer and soon I will disappear into the wilderness. I was hoping that I may come across engineers that could do good stuff to my FSD, sensors, scanners etc, but it seems that the first guy wants combat stuff in order to mod my weapons, and all the others are locked until I do this. Is this correct?

Don't get me wrong, this is not a "Frontier got it wrong blah blah blah" post, I am merely wondering if this engineer part of the game is forever closed to me unless I get back in to pew pew?

Hibachi.

Unfortunately it is not as simple as it first seems.

It appears that the concept of the Engineers (I hate them, but have to use them to improve my ship) is to take you out of your comfort zone and into other arenas of the game.

You like exploring mostly? .... the game requires you to find some materials that are more quickly found by shooting down ships ...

You like shooting ships, not exploration? .... the game requires you to do a heap load of stuff and explore at least 5000 lyrs if you want to uprate your ship's thrusters to the max (Engineer Palin) ....

and so it goes on .....

but check out this site http://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers to see what each engineer requires and what they can do.

In time, you should see invites from several of them and their location will be marked in purple on the galaxy map.

I kind of disagree with that. For some mods it may be true, but most of them follow your way of playing the game.
Take Felicity Farseer, for example. You get the invitation for reaching the exploration rank of Scout, then you go to Maia to buy the Meta-Alloy, or you can find it during your exploration of Pleiades or other nebuale.
Once you've unlocked Felicity, she does all sorts of mods aimed at explorers - FSD upgrades, thrusters, powerplants... The materials needed for those upgrades are found on planets, in USS during the time in supercruise and via mining. All of them save one have multiple ways to obtain them. Felicity is an explorer for the explorers through and through. You don't have to do combat at all.

If you need to upgrade your weapons, then yes, some of the mats are gained during combat. But even then there are alternative ways to get them, like mission rewards and also most of the mods are done by more than one engineer, so you always have a choice.
Engineers do force you out of your comfort zone, so to speak, but only if you want to unlock all of them. But "Playing the game your way" will unlock engineers that are appropriate and helpful for your chosen playstyle, BY your chosen playstyle.

Once again the forum has not let me down. I tried to set off "into the wild" in my trusty T6 bathtub, but here I am, many hours later, back in the bubble. That however is a story for a different thread.

But, during my travels (maybe 900ly or so) I have now received two invites from engineers who don't require combat credentials, so I guess that answers my question :)

As usual, the many and wise ladies and gentlemen of the forum provided excellent answers, and as usual Hibachi lit the blue touch paper of impatience before waiting for those answers. I am now in my hangar trying to knock the dents out of my T6 whilst simultaneously licking my wounds!

There is always tomorrow!

That sounds like a story. :D

this should help you, paired with the already suggested inara.cz

PUsh one Engi to something like level 3,5 usually get´s you the next invite.
Be aware, some engis require silly and long grinds, some not. Some you might not need for
what you want to do, but you might need them to unlock the next one that you might need.
A bit of planning required there if you don´t want to do the whole grind.

If you want a good exploration vessel it is actually fine to just do the FSD, because you will
not need guns, or strong shields or boosters or and of that fancy stuff. Rolling Lightweight mod
on some of the stuff like life support can increase range slightly, but is not required, and can
be a long grind to get all to perfection.

I had obtained so much exploration data from a journey from Jaques I went straight to Farseer and unlocked her that way ... I have never seen a Meta Alloy, so yes, I took an exploration route direct for an exploration purpose. But you still have to shoot ships to get some of the materials (can't remember what these are now). It was sad shooting innocent T-9s. I haven't slept for weeks.

what sucks is that this is again a kind of "solo player experience" because we cannot sahre exploration data or the materials with other players.

Perhaps, but maybe this is why we head off into the unknown. We don't want to be bound by others or be beholden to them, we just want to be far enough away that we can't hear their CONSTANT BICKERING. Or maybe that's just me...

To unlock engineers you have to love grind. To use their services, you have to love grind.

This isn't a game, it's an unpaid job.
