Conflicting CMDR names?

All,

I was wondering how the game handles conflicts in usernames, for example if on the PC someone has used a CMDR name which matches a GT on Xbox how does the game handle it? I am wondering from the point of view of the PS4 because I can imagine there might be conflicts all over the place?

Cheers.

If I remember correctly, all of us on PS4 will be stuck with our PSN name (I'm not too happy with it, but I guess it's a consequence of Sony's policy to never let you change your PSN ID...). So yes, I suppose that there will be some current PSN name that coincides with someone's in-game Commander name on PC or XBOX...but considering that the three sets of players will never interact, that could be no problem. It's like if two people call themselves with the same name in different games. The difficulty will only arise on meta-game websites and forums, but there one could just go with "stormyukPC" or "stormyukPS".

But then again, people who are playing now on both PC and XBOX will know more.

Yeh I am curious how it works for things like discoveries. I know there is no cross platform play, so no problem there.

I think that discoveries are the same for everyone?

Exactly, so how does the game handle such a conflict of name?

Ahh right, I didn't realise that I thought it was all one universe. Interesting. Good find.

Well yeah it's tricky. Stuff like, say, a new station WILL be synced across the 3 systems, but other (like this) will not. My guess is, anythig that has something to do with an individual commander's name will not be synced, precisely because of the complications we discussed.

This discussion is from XB1 Preview program times, essentially beta. All these data were, naturally, erased when universes were merged at "full" XB1 game start. I am pretty sure they have common database now, but I can check. I have both PC and XB1 version and my commander name is the same on both. I don't see what problems are here, I suppose all "first discovered by" refer to discoverer as a text.

XB1 discovery database definitely inherited PC commanders discoveries.

I thought that was how it worked.

So I guess my original question remains, how are conflicting GT and PC CMDRs and PS4 PSN ids (in the future) resolved when it comes to "first discovered by"? My question would be if a PSN id has the same CMDR name as someone already in the PC universe how would it differentiate between first discovered? Or basically doesn't it? It might just not be distinguished. If you have the same name on 2 or 3 platforms its not an issue of course. I guess I am just wondering when different commanders have the same name.

When you create a Steam, Xbox or PSN username the platforms give you a long unique user ID#. IE account number.
If you were the first to discovery something, code in the game would look at your unique user ID's meta data (which includes username/server/platform/avatar..etc) and then display the username as the person who discovered it, aka you.

Its up the user interface on how much of this meta data it wants to show you. For example, the text could easily say "This planet discovered by Stormyuk on PS4 at 3303 Feb 22. or "This planet discovered by <meta data1> on <meta data2> at <yeardate>. It just chooses to show you less.

Perfect sense. Thanks and repped. :)

First of all, the Galaxy is shared, if a Xbox CMDR, or PC CMDR, discovered a system, this system will also be discovered on PS4 by the same CMDR.

I believe, (And im not 100% of this) that in the future, every CMDR will have a platform specific icon next to their name.

This is also what I understand was being considered. I think with just xbox and pc it hasnt been issue but with potentially millions more users on ps4 it might be needed.

I also would love to see the date (in 330* terms of course) on the 'discovered by' page info. As dox said, that data has to be there, why not use it?

Yeah that blows. Not being a programmer or coder I have no idea why that is but surely it isn't too hard a concept to have an in-game name that is separate to your PSN id but still registers your trophies against your PSNID? I know its a minor quibble but it would be cool to have different CMDR names to your PSN ID - even just for Role play purposes.

Its actually not hard at all as far as the "coding" is concerned. The reason that users cannot change their PSNID/Xbox Gamertags on consoles is simply to prevent players from grieving and trolling each other in a multiplayer environment in which the user is paying a service fee for. aka PS Plus & Xbox Live. Steam is a free service so their TOS is a little more loose on usernames displayed in games and have a different policy on player abuse. They usually leave that up to the developer to allow/disallow the feature.

Final Fantasy XIV MMO allows you to play with a character name that is not your PSN ID on playstation, don't see this has to be any different.

I think its all a bit moot. Its has been confirmed from the Official FAQ that ED will be using PSN id as commander name.

Just saying, as people are claiming that gamer names can never be changed on PSN in games, when in fact they can.
