Shock Horror! I've Been Playing the Game As Intended!

So, it suddenly dawned on me today, that I believe I'm playing the game exactly how FD wanted...

•I don't grind the same mission 473 times a day.
•I won't repeatedly fly backwards and forwards 100ly with my 10 rare goods to give to an engineer.
•I don't stare at my military or combat rank after each mission or kill to see if it moved.
•I don't suicide myself to clear a bounty.
•I don't spend my entire session trying to find 1 material.

... Am I doing it wrong?

The only thing I do seem to do, is log out and in to see if non-mining missions pop up, Otherwise I move on.

Other hand that, I seem to do whatever takes my fancy at the time.
Some missions are fun to do a few times over, data scanning and whatnot. But I won't spend all day doing them just one type.
That engineer will get his goodies the next time out near where they sell them, I'm not making 2 more dedicated trips for them. The other engineers wanting things will get them when I stumble across them, and I'm nearby to hand them in. (I have lots of half unlocked engineers!)
I've got a 50,000cr bounty because of PowerPlay murdering, so bounty hunters are suiciding themselves off me all the time. It's funny/annoying but I'm going to keep it.
I'm slowly working towards my Elite combat rank, and the rank for a Corvette. But I'm in no rush, I don't even really need a Corvette.
I did run out of Sulphur earlier, so I landed to see what I could find. Then carried on with my previous task.

I used to grind things quite a bit.
Combat, Missions, Hyperspace, Materials, etc.

But the game, for me, feels so much better when I just play it, rather than try to beat it.

I'm not saying it's wrong to do any of those things. Each to their own. :)
I'm just saying I've found my groove in ED, and I'm happier than ever!

Fly safe all!

Well... you're also only into PP to grind merits for 4 weeks, so you can get the pack-hounds, then drop it. I'm pretty sure that's not how FD had intended for PP to be played. ;)
Not saying there's anything wrong with that, as I'm doing the same.

Lol well until FD fix PowerPlay, I'm gonna milk that one. :p

To be honest, getting 750 merits on week 3 isn't going to be a "grind". I did 300 in 20 minutes, and it was quite fun to murder random people for a change. Lol
So basically an hour's work should cover it. Then I can get back to doing whatever I feel like. :D

I would stay in PowerPlay if it offered any other benefits. But it doesn't.

You only need to get merits in the forth week and 750 is not particularly grindy

Ninja'd
but seeing as I'm editing..
id be really impressed is you clean saved and got rid of your assets before playing the game as intended [yesnod]

Heh, to be honest, I don't think many of my assets were even from grind.
I did do a fair few to Robigo runs back in the day, back when they were fun and difficult. But probably 100m worth maximum. (I have 750m in assets).
Most of my money came from bounty hunting and CGs though.
I love good CGs. I do then in Open(internet allowing), so it's even more fun.

Most of the grind I attempted to do was for Military Rank.
But considering I hate all Imperial ships (bar iCutter cos I've never flown it, and the iEagle cos its fun), and I only recently bothered to try the FGS, which was also fun, I've hardly gained anything. Lol

I still primarily just fly my Python. Lol

I'm with ya on that.

I think it depends on what faction you play for too. Some have the benefit of having those military CZ's where you can farm merits easy-peasy.
Unfortunately Ailsing doesn't have those. I tried the "pirate supplies" option, but once I found out it was nerfed to just one metit per container, i ditched that. I've decided it's best to just wait until week 3 and dump several mil into fast-tracking, make a few delivery runs, and be done with this mess.

I was walking past the grounds of an asylum once, and heard from behind the fence people chanting: "Six! Six! Six! Six!"
Curious, I tried to peer over the fence, but it was too high, but I found a hole in the fence and peered through, when someone poked me in the eye, and the inmates began chanting: "Seven! Seven! Seven! Seven!"

I've been doing largely the same thing, and enjoying myself terribly.
I have taken little side trips to do things like Spend a Day in a CZ, The Hunt for Red October Ale (aka looking for materials), and I've taken a trip or two in a Suicidewinder because I'd rather contribute to a Community Goal than miss out because someone either got in my way, or it took a half a milisecond for that Wanted ship status to update that said ship was, in fact, Wanted - or because a doomed Anaconda deployed a Clean fighter even as the rest of the ship was going up in flames (bugs are not my fault and I won't 'pay the price' because of them).

But I greatly enjoy my experiences overall.

Glad you've found your own trail to blaze, Commander. I play in a similar way for 2 years now and I'm having a blast :) Never felt the game is a grind, never really got bored, just got an Anaconda and started to mod it best to my (humble) abilities. I may actually go and finally visit Sol!

I only started about a month ago, and decided from day one that I would absolutely not hard grind credits. So, I pick up circular trading runs, and just enjoy the views. Somedays, I make decent money, other days not so much. ("OH lordy please help us!! donate half of all your money to our Famine/Outbreak relief funds!!!")

I am absolutely not a combat pilot either, so I fly in Mobius PG (XBox EU Version). If I get Interdicted, I NEVER submit. ALWAYS evade! (it invariably is much easier these days).

I RP on Powerplay (this is what FDev hope you will do with it currently. Strong imagination required!), and tell myself that I am helping the blue-haired one regain her rightful position of Empress and remove that cruel aunt of hers.

After a month of playing I have an A-rated Type-6 with an ADS, and about 7M in the bank.

I never grind.....period.
Back in the days when I still played WoT I did nothing else but grind....ugh.

In ED I do only those things that I like, one day it's bounty hunting, another mission running or searching materials for the engineers.
Or I leave the bubble in my Asp and go exploring untill I want to go back.
ED is awesome when you make it so, grinding is not fun to me at all.
Why get the most expensive ship as fast as possible?
Once you have it you don't know how to have fun with it.
I always have fun in ED and it took me two years to get the Anaconda, in those two years I learned how to have fun in that Anaconda and what I want to use it for.
Why the rush? it's not like ED is time limited.

Fly save and have fun o7

I absolutely, totally, 100% agree with the OP! IMHO, solely focusing on a single goal in the whole time is the very reason for many of the threads started by disgruntled, disappointed, and annoyed players, the reason why people claim the game is too grindy.

I play exactly the same way the OP has described it, and think that's the reason why I still enjoy the game very much, even after playing for over two years since the premium beta.

I've read quite a few threads this week, and I can say with authority that if you're having fun - you're doing it wrong.

I think the problem is your point-of-view. Imagine you go into a supermarket, and buy a new type of biscuits...
- You might think, I like this biscuit (or I don't like this biscuit?).
- what you should think is "I wanted a hobnob, and this ISN'T A [censored] HOBNOB!!!!!".

The trick is to start with the preconception that *you* are smarter than everyone else, that your idea of the biscuit is correct, and everyone else is a '14-year old', a 'casual biscuit eater' or 'someone that shoves biscuits into consoles'.
Finally, realise that the real problem is that the lazy biscuit makers don't understand how to make HobNobs!!!! or the lead biscuit maker is a filthy foreigner that likes those biscuits with the fancy sugar on the top!!!

Alternatively, you can just enjoy the game. Some people are weird like that.
