News Ship naming – transmission intercepted.

<sigh>

I love the idea of naming a ship - it's one great way to personalise your own little floating palace within the Elite Universe.

However

I've spent too many dogfights with poorly named commanders such as 'CMDR 1337skillzorpwn' that I'm pretty sure I'm going to be even more curmudgeonly when I encounter 'HMS BoatyMcBoatface' in the void.

Say, Frontier... any chance you could allow me to toggle Stupid Ship Names™ with something more immersive... something like the ship registrations you had in all other Elite games in the series? Because, well... immersion!

If you aren't familiar with what I am barking on about, please read this, this or even this!

Thanks!

PS. My apologies to 'CMDR 1337skillzorpwn' if you do indeed exist. I'm sorry. No, I really AM sorry ;)

Great news! Even if it wasn't exactly a secret :)

Is there any word on whether the nameplates will have a dedicated slot rather than occupying a decal slot? I'm hoping that we won't have to sacrifice two of our three decals to have the name on both sides of the ship. Not to mention that many ships have decal locations which would be less than ideal spots for the ship's name to be displayed.

I propose that the inevitable wordfilter changes any instance of 'Boaty McBoatface' to read 'Sir David Attenborough' instead :D

Naming your ship should have been in the game from the start. Everyone likes to name the craft you spend most of your time in. It`s a form of endearment and superstition (you sort of bond with it for luck) that`s been going with Man and his craft for centuries. In fact, it was bad fortune to not name your ship... And it is still practised today in reality.

Anyone ever seen a ship with no name? Thought not.

Really? Really?

This is why we can't have nice things.

Yeah, god. Something something, nickle and dime, something something. <I'm aghast that I'm expected to pay for something I enjoy when I do this other activity that I enjoy but don't have to pay>

The world isn't fair. #CryEmoji, #ToCoolForSchool, #ClassOf2017.

It's a cosmetic thing, you don't need it to play the game, it's just something you can do to make you ships more custom made.

Don't want to pay, don't buy it, $1 - $2 for a name plate is actually not the end of the world.

This.

It's not like anyone else is going to see your nameplate other than YOU or your multicrew buddies anyway (unless you take lots of screenies or videos). It's NOT an important game feature, therefore being a paid-for cosmetic is okay with me.

Have some rep for BoatyMcBoatface. I forget what country voted for that. Wasn't it the Brits?

I don't see how name tags would be any different than decals, they can even use the same color pallette as the decals, though multi-colored paint jobs may be an issue.

I think people are just getting confused between the difference between naming your ship and stenciling it on the hull.

Also, good job turning an info thread into a micro transactions complaint thread. Are the delays seriously getting to people that much?

Will death messages by CMDRs (or NPCs with named ships) be like:
"Your ship has been destroyed by [NPC/CMDR NAME] in the ship [SHIP NAME]"

Or something similiar?

Oh joy, ship naming, that'll bring out the best in the players. We'll have every fictional starship name repeated over and over by those with no imagination, random swear words and letter/number combinations from the juvenile branch and a tiny percentage of ships with actual half decent names.

FD should make a ship name permanent to that ship even when sold and decrease the ships value for every other ship with the same name. Also probably dish out a weekly prize for really GOOD names.

In case you haven't seen names on actual personal craft named by actual human beings...

Yep, copycat names IRL too.

Not sure what the fuss is all about, ship naming is neither here nor there for me, so I can name my ship, sure I was doing that back in 04 when I started playing Eve.

As for paying to have it on my hull...well that makes sense but really...saying that I have paid for nice looking weapon colours, ship skins, a body kit for my python, but hey it makes screen shots look a bit more interesting.

Ship naming isn't really that bigger deal tbh, I really hope this isn't the thing that was hinted at that was going to blow our minds.
