New Ships concept

Hey Frontier,

Don't know if gamers already suggested this, but will do it anyway. It would be awesome if we could see some new ships in the game, but really special ones...These ships would be tributes to some of the greatest Sci-Fi movies and tv shows.

Battlestar Galactica - Massive ship which could be used for war (perfect with the multicrew update) since they could use more than one fighter bay. Or even miniaturize the ship with massive hull features and endurance for battle..

The Nostromo - Passenger or fighter

Millenium falcon - no brainer there[smile]

The Avalon - New movie "passengers" would be perfect for travelling distances 100+LY

Creating fighter ships similar to some of these shows and movies would be great...

Thank you for creating this game guys...wish u guys the best.:D:D

In a word RIGHTS.

All of these ships have a copyright and it would cost FD (then ultimately us) a lot of money to buy the rights to incorporate those ships into this game. On top of that, I don't think Elite would be quite the same if we had those ships in it, it would make the game very much like every voxel type space game on the market that has workshop blueprints for so many well known sci-fi ships.

Now if we could pressure FD into releasing an offline single player version of ED, we could use mods to put in any ships we wanted to design ourselves for it. The ability to mod without restriction would make a single player offline version of the game really attractive to a lot of people. Bethesda has made a fortune out of Skyrim by allowing no restriction modding, released in 2011 and still going strong in 2017 with even a 64 bit conversion released for the game. FD would do well to learn from their example since Elite, EF and EFE were cult games but I don't think ED will ever achieve cult status while it remains an online game.

Yeah right about that....one thing that it's missing would be modding without restrictions. but they could also include some mods without needing those frontier points.

Sorry but IMO it would ruin the game! Go to Pizza Hut and expect a Big Mac. did I go to pizza hut for?! Already hate naming stations for deceased actors. Scientists ok they are historical and won't be forgotten, actors...no with all due respects.

Not going to happen. FD has their very own kind of ship design and it's quite important to them. There's this whole thing about having ships that can realistically do atmospherical flight and have a balanced center of gravity with the thrusters, etc so that the thrusters push the ship in a way that makes sense physically speaking.

Don't get me wrong though, I love to see new ships. Actually I think there's some space huh "economically speaking" in-between the heavy fighters and the more costly ships such as the corvettes or fer de lance for more ships with costs of about twenty millions or something like that.

That really depends. Scientists often remain unknown except for the really famous ones. You know who invented the light bulb and radio but who invented catseyes for the roads or even street lamps?

Same goes with actors. Leonard Nimoy (RIP) will always be known as Spock. If I recall, he did once say in a chat show, he was proud of the fact that so many people who asked for his autograph only knew him as Spock and didn't know his real name at all because it meant he really did bring the character to life. I'm actually quite glad FD decided to name a station after him.

As for the additional ships, I would love to see many more ships added to the game, there are certainly gaps that need filling. But I'd rather they were unique to Elite.
At the same time, a big time goal is needed in the form of a capital class ship that costs a mint to buy and the rebuy alone costs as much as a Cutter, somewhere to park a couple of your ships and store some cargo transferred from them and maybe resupply things like limpets, fuel and ammo etc for long term mining ops outside the bubble and such. This kind of goal gives us something really useful to aim for, something this game is lacking right now.

For me, I'd just like to see the return of the old ships (for nostalgia purposes) from previous games, plus a kind of second hand ship market, where you can buy used or damaged ships at various equipment levels and variable reliability.

Honestly it would be completely unrealistic if capital ships could be insured. like.. who would even insure that? Nobody would.

On another hand, I can imagine a lot of players would hate the idea of a total loss on a ship like that. But I can imagine that a comprise could be reached where it would be much harder than regular ships to destroy and, even after being rendered impossible to fight back, it could still manage to retreat and repair in reasonable circumstances.

Having thought again about it,... I agree to this point ...

Same here - more like ships form the past games, personally I think they should have been done much before new ships.

Interesting idea, a good money sink for those billionaires who don't know what to do with all that money.
