Is this game gonna be like EVE at all?

So I have been playing EVE for around 5 months now and its a good game and all but im kinda of a casual player and EVE is a bit too much like real life to the point where it feels like a job.

I dont know if this question has been asked, but will this game be like EVE, where you can attack anyone anywhere and so on and once you lose it its pretty much gone for ever. I mean im fine with the whole if you lose it, its gone thing, but my main concern is, is to earn a decent amount of in game cash do i have to wait like 3 months to get good at something, or can i just make the cash and buy a good trade ship and be done with it, no waiting 3 months for skills and stuff, no delayed time in order to get the ship, except for the time to get the cash.

Also on the subject of how people can attack you everywhere in EVE, is there gonna be places and routes in Elite that are very safe where theres little to no chance of people being able to shoot you. I know that this question may not be able to be answered yet, but i was just curious. Again, im a casual player, so if someone can attack me for no reason in all of space then thats a problem for me.

As much as I think EVE is a good game, it just is not for casual players, requires no small amount of patience, and is very frustrating. Thank you guys ahead of time.

PS: If you dont have the answers to these questions then that's completely fine.

There will be many options for you to avoid being attacked by other players. ED is also aiming for much harsher penalties for those actions. You can be in the "all group" can be attack at any time but again harsh penalties for those that do, full system of how this works is unknown. Or you can select to be in smaller groups were only your friends or "corp" members can see you. Also ships will have full insurance so you don't lose it unless you can't pay.

Yes there will be areas that are patrolled much like high-sec in EVE online. While people can still attack you the chance of it happening will be very low.

You don't need to wait for skills in E: D, you have to learn them yourself. And once you've got the cash, you can buy any ship you see available at a shipyard.

You can be shot at everywhere, but there will be consequences for the shooter. Some areas will be quite safe, and some areas will be really dangerous. Opting out of multiplayer will protect you from other players, but NPCs are always much more numerous and can behave irrationally too.

i mean i expect some areas like that, but the fact that the penalty will be harsher if i do get attacked in those places makes up for it.

Casual Play is definitely supported, as long as you just think along the lines of 'The more you put in, the more you'll get out' but there should always be stuff to do. Elite Dangerous is not a Play By Spreadsheet.

Trade and Combat is still being balanced, and just now in PB2 you can get a decent ship and equipment fairly quickly. How long .. well that's a piece of string isn't it. It will depend on how good you are and how much time you can spare to play. Hard to say how long, but at current prices (which will no doubt change) a half decent player who plays a couple of hours every couple of days, could be flying a shiny new ship within a week. Longer of course for the more expensive ones.

Combat balancing is ongoing. There will be safe-ish systems and not so safe. In safe systems expect Police or military response and fines / bounties. Similar in idea to EVEs system (at least the last time I played EVE anyway) but different in application. There are no skills or levels etc, as in EVE. You become good at something simply by being good yourself. The only sort of levelly thing are the Ratings you can get in Combat, Trade, Exploration etc and reputation you earn (or lose) through gameplay - but this is down to you as a player not any time factor as such.

EDIT: Look at my sig, and click on the link to the Design Discussion Archive. A treasure trove of information, but there is a lot to read through so sit down with a cuppa and absorb all that Elitey Goodness.

I sure do hope not!

Though I've played EVE since 2006, and still play it today, I am finding that CCP (the devs for EVE Online) have a clear propensity to favor the PvP over the PvE.

Don't get me wrong: I love the PvP and have been in factional warfare since 2008, but the game as a whole provides no real safe area for the PvEer.
+ You have constant scamming from Jita to Amarr,
+ Can flipping is a common occurrence,
+ and Hulkageddon is so popular, it's almost become a sport.

Those vikings (CCP is located in Iceland) love conflict, and there really is no haven from griefers who are too cowardly to go into Null-Sec, and find harassing carebears a morbid form of entertainment.

I seriously hope both Frontier with Elite: Dangerous and Chris Roberts with [REDACTED] will provide a greater balance. Sure, give the PvPers their fun, but keep them from misbehaving with folk who don't want such hassles.

ADDENDUM:
I know... I know... ED has already come out and said that they will not allow player run universes like Freelancer, Minecraft or [REDACTED]. But it sure would be a wonderful idea if they changed their mind! Our gaming community runs both Minecraft and Freelancer servers, and have a firm hand on griefing.

Yes it will be like EVE in some ways. It's a computer game where you fly a spaceship - inevitably there will be similarities. It will also be very different in many ways. Many aspects of the two games are similar, but the fundamental gameplay is different, and so are many of the design choices.

There are no skills. It doesn't have RPG style character progression. You control your ship directly so it's down to you.

There will be places where you're very unlikely to get attacked. This will be both in secure systems (there will be many) which are policed, and systems beyond the Frontier where you won't run in to anyone. Unlike EVE, the number of systems is so big that players will only ever occupy a tiny fraction of them.

That said, there will also be places where you could get attacked for no reason. You can choose to avoid those systems, or you can just not play in the all-group. Unlike EVE, in this game you can choose to go single player, or limit the other players in your universe to a certain group.

Dying is likely to be fairly harsh compared to many games, but not so bad as you fear. You don't lose skills, you can have ship insurance and get back in space right away.

This won't be an easy game, but it will be casual friendly in the sense that you can progress at your pace, there will always be plenty to do, and you don't have to compete directly with people who are playing more than you (unless you want to).

Whilst PvP will be an option, DBOBE has gone on record to say he is aiming more for co-op game play.

As far as skills go - well, there are no "skills" you need to grind up.

You will train your reflexes and flying skills, and you will learn how to read and play the markets.

And that is about it.

Yeah, same here i love the pvp, but for the PVE, EVE is not definitely not that best at it.

So thats why im thinking ED in future

There's your ship, there's the galaxy... off you go!

Dead on.

You get your ship (and fly it unlike Eve, which is more like spreadsheets in space most of the time) and what you do and where you go to make a living is up to you.

Your not fixed into any career path, you can be mining one moment, then trading, then bounty hunting, then pirating, then exploring, then doing missions, and once bored you can go salvaging, or smuggling, stealing, murdering, mercenary work...and so on. Whatever you want to do, go and do it. You can do it all alone or hook up with friends.

Some ships of course will be better at certain roles than others, but as you accumulate wealth (credits) you will be able to upgrade/customise your ships and buy new ones.

You can attack anyone anywhere, theoretically, but doing so in high security systems is likley to be very bad for you. Attacking other players near stations for example will see you die in very short order, either the station will kill you or a police force will be on to you within a few seconds. They don't do arrests, they simply blow you up, as well as being punished in financial terms, reputation etc etc.

In low security areas however, especially Anarchy systems, pretty much anything goes. Bear that in mind when you choose your next destination.

In short killing players in "safe" systems while possible, will be very unlikely. Space is a Dangerous place though, never forget that. :D

I just want some places where i can leave my computer for like a hour and have a very low chance of coming back and finding myself dead

Do not forget exploration and its own quirks.

You can always choose to play multiplayer in a 'solo' group, where you will not see any other players, and only NPCs may attack you.

As I just said in another thread... the focus is different. Ultimately EVE has become about Empire Building. Elite Dangerous is trying hard to keep the focus on the solitary pilot or a small group of pilots in a big universe.
