I hate the Asp. It's a pain to dock, it's a bit ugly and everyone else seems to like it. Anyone agree with me?

I would agree that (most) everyone else seems to like it.... 
I've just finished the "5,000LY from start" requirement to unlock Professor Palin - managed it in about 9 hours and got a fair few first discovered systems as well.

It's the easiest ship in the game to dock, at least partly due to being able to see down...

You may think it's ugly, but that's a point of view... you're entitled to that but I'd disagree.
Basically, if you can't dock an AspX, then you're doing it wrong.
Hmm, dare I say it? yes i do, I don't like it either, I have never flown one but I still don't like it, I know I will hate it! A sort of predictive hate relationship
What do I fly instead? Why my trusty Lakon Type 6 of course.

Type 6 is similar in many ways, as is the keelback.
Asp is a tad faster, and better armed/armoured.
If you like the T6, then there's no reason not to love the AspX. After all, from the inside, they look pretty much the same.

If the Asp X didn't have that utterly daft engine noise, I'd probably have liked the ship.
Unfortunately, I don't think FDEV will ever change the farting noise it makes.

Like I said upthread though, looks are a point of view. I quite like it, though it did take a while to get used to it.
But it's the ship that got me to exploration Elite, and now I'd never be without one. Fitter with passenger cabins, and armed with a pair of class 2 beams and 4 seeker missile racks. Also painted pink. It jumps in excess of 42LY (depending on the exact loadout).
It's a bit like a cold sore. Once you have one, then you'll never be completely rid of them.
The Conda is the perfect exploration ship. Can be fitted with all the mod cons/equipment, properly shielded/weaponized for that "Enterprise/I'm a peaceful explorer but I can pack a punch" feel, with a decent Engineered thruster modification she's rather nippy and manoeuvrable, and still have an awesome jump range to boot.
But if you don't yet have the funds for a Conda, and can stand farting throughout the galaxy, then yeah the Asp Ex is the next best thing. The DBE is really great if you're on a tight budget, and even the Cobra Mk.III makes for a decent exploration ship.
I do love my ExploraCutter though, because if you're going to go out exploring, go out there in comfort, style, and Bask! Plus, the Cutter is an alien chick-magnet.
Not flown a keelback, but my partner swears by them.
Basically a hyperdrive for a SLF.
All the fun, none of the cost.
