For those looking to go oculus rift VR for ED, now is a good time!.

From what I gather this is a permanent price decrease.

Yup, but some are lagging behind.

This is basically the newegg of scandinavia.

That price equates to $332.

I bought mine from the oculus store directly for basically a third.

That is up to you of course but i think cv1 with touch and 3 cameras now is great value if you have the pc to run it. Some if the bundled software is top drawer.

Rift wont be getting an update for 12 months, vives improvements are all pay extra for and the lg steamvr headset is not out till much later in the year and even then it is only a tiny improvement over the vive.

I have had quality vr now since middle of 2014 and would not contemplate being without it. Different strokes i guess

Thanks. It has gone to £99 on Amazon now. I'll order it for next weekend.

I still think that its worth holding out and seeing what this year brings, I think there are cheaper and improved models on the horizon. MS will be releasing a new unit for the new xbox and Win 10 that is both VR & AR. 4k units are not far off.

You won't see 4k for a couple of years at least. To run that we will need to see things like foveated rendering, render forward and eye tracking implemented in hardware and in games. As far as MS goes, we have all seen how well they do when it comes to hardware and even if their hmd works out well, I doubt it will run games like ED better than Rift or Vive.

Both titles need something in the software catalog department, rift with touch is catching up, but only catching up..

how can rift onlybe catching up software wise?

all stuff which runs on the vive runs on the rift. AFAIK there is only 1 exception, and even that works via a simple hack (google earth VR)

now a few titles need a slight patch to make touch play nice instead of the touch wands - depending on what the wands "do", but they still all essentially work afaik.

oculus / facebook are actually funding / part funding a lot of software themselves. There are plenty of reasons to dislike oculus/facebook imo, but supporting good quality software for their product is not one of them.

oh and robo recall works super well on the vive as well. after demoing mine, a mate of mine bought it right away on his vive.

I'm very very pleased with my Rift. Very. If you are wavering like I was, just do it and damn the consequences. I did and dont regret it one iota.

I'm thinking of getting the Touch now that the price has come down... But was wondering what it's like.
What are peoples opinions of it ? Does it add much to the Rift experience ? Anyone have any game recommendations that really show it off ?

99 quid, total no brainer - tho to be honest i would strongly suggest a 3rd sensor and go proper full room meaning £150

robo recall really shows it off and is free. best motion controlled vr game out there

doom 3 BFG with its full room vr fan made mod is also right up there.... this costs 3-5 quid if you shop around (the vr mod is free)

if you want to splash a little more cash arizona sunshine is also very good.

the thrill of the fight, eleven table tennis and space pirate trainer are all also worth a look and the right side of £10

thrill of the fight is good for a bit of personal fitness too

there is heaps of totally free stuff too, both on the oculus store, but also on steam (on steam The Lab is probably the best quality freebie on steam and is up there with the stuff on the oculus store - generally you have to be careful on steam, there is a lot of gash)

And I just succumbed.

Ordered a set of touch controllers...

Robot recall does look fun...

I'm one of these people who has the Oculus + Touch but to be honest really struggles to do anything other than play Elite.

That said, I spent the weekend playing Robo Recall and Oh. My. God. It's insanely good fun. [squeeeee] I very nearly didn't play Elite today (obviously I did but man, I gave the idea of just mindlessly ripping a few more robots apart several minutes serious consideration first - it's THAT good).

Trailer for those who aren't aware of this game ...

I didn't expect that much of the Touch to be honest but where it's used well it's a revelation, the buttons seem touch sensitive so when your forefinger is resting on the fire button the ingame hand shows that finger at rest, but move it away from the button the finger points forward, same with the thumb rest. You can make a fist, grabbing things feels natural and on Steam is a free Star Wars demo where the Falcon comes into land by you and swinging a light sabre... well, it awakened my inner child :)

I only don't see the need to teleport if some games use other methods like hand grappling. I just wonder why there's no use of walking via the touch joystick. I'm not gonna get any of this daft teleport stuff. Also it should be possible for games to introduce real surround video by now then create life-like objects within them to interact with. I think they need me huh!

I despise teleporting more than most, but apparently something like 9 out 10 start barfing or collapsing with normal stick movement.
Sure you can build tolerance fairly easy, but most normal people (I consider myself a tad weird) aren't willing to spend a few dozen hours easing into something. When the first impressions are akin to when Neo learned what the matrix was.

As far as I'm concerned, locomotion is THE hurdle that's needed to surmount before VR can be truly mainstream.

And sadly I think we need a nerve gear kind of device to really get there.

It's not difficult to write one, I created one for the Vive touch pad in Unity but a lot of people do struggle with the movement once they don't have that ship around them to fool their brain into being OK still being physically stationary. Once you get out of the ship though it does feel wrong turning when you're body isn't actually moving. It can make people sick as TorTorden says, although given how much time I spent spinning wildly on the floor (in VR) whilst creating the script I don't think it affects me that badly.

It'll be interesting to see how Frontier cope with this.

I just got my rift + touch on Sunday and im over the moon with it, the tracking even with just 2 sensors has far surpassed my expectations in my play area with a room scale setup, elite is mind blowing! Enjoy when you get it!

Touch arrived today, about 6 hours after the tracking details.

I do prefer them to the vive wands but it's a slight.
The tracking in view of the cameras are fine, but as soon as you turn around...
Well that's when I miss the lighthouse tracking system.

And seriously why is the camera cable only six feet long ?

I might be a little spoiled having both, but honestly camera tracking is a sub optimal solution when the lighthouses exist.

That said it's all in all brilliant and well worth the new price.
And if you have a rift a no brainer really.

Now lunch and then, more robo recall

how many cameras do you have... whilst full room does work with just 2 (if you set them up correctly similar to the light house units) 3 is where you need to be to get almost perfect tracking imo.

i have extended my cables - my hmd by 2 m and my cameras by 5m.

Only the two, and couldn't be to get a third, not when I have a Vive in a larger area with none of these problems.

The vive tracking area is superior to the rift however with the current prices a 4 camera rift setup is still cheaper than the vive. So unless you have a really big room (bigger than say 4.5m x 4.5m) they should track similarly with 3/4 cameras.
