Docking Etiquette?

So, I'm lifting off, inside a coriolis station in my T9, when I get a ranty DM suggesting (amongst other things) that I need to "look where I'm going".
Next thing I know, I'm being shot at from behind, I just about had time to target him and see that it was a Cobra and then the station's laser blew him to bits.
*shrugs*

The way I see it, I realise that pilots can't see behind them (without using the debug camera) so it's always up to the person who can see the other ship to take avoiding action.
I'm sure we've all been cut-up by both NPCs and CMDRs but, as long as you can see them, you just slow down or turn to avoid a collision.
No big deal.

And, let's face it; if you're flying a Cobra and you can't avoid a T9, you have bigger problems than accidental collisions.

Am I wrong to have such a cavalier attitude toward station safety?
Does everybody else use the debug camera to check there's nobody around before they lift off?
Should FDev start fitting ships with a rear-view camera?

I tend to undock and lift off a few metres until the scanner kicks in, then I can identify if there's a ship behind me. If there is, and it's a hollow contact, I'll wait for the CMDR to go past. It won't take them long. If it's an NPC, I'll probably just go anyway, as they're too slow. I fly a 'conda so I'm not going to explode if an NPC bounces off me at <100.

Edit : and always aligned to the green lights

I'd say that indeed the responsibility is up to the person who can see the other ship. I do normally try to be careful though when lifting off vertically as you might be moving in someone's blind spot if you are taking off too quick.

That said - npc Beluga pilots are idiots that apparently get their pilots license free with a pack of biscuits. These guys think nothing of throwing their ship around just as you are about to pass through the mailslot...

I never check my surrounding, never looking back, just retract the landing gear and boost out......
Something blocking my way.....A8 prismatics take care of it :x

Last time i did it, i've noticed the careless station defense system achieving a triple kill lol

Exactly! I have no rearview mirror, my landing gear is up before dead-end-job docking guy/girl tells me released! Boost the 2nd wheels are up, im either small enough to avoid stuff or big enough to not need to! The PVP hate crew always say "Why should i be ganked if i dont want to be, i dont want them to interfere with my game!" So i dont want people to interfere with my launch and out in 6 second sequence :).

Well, that's the only dodgy situation.

Thing is, though, if you can't see them and they can't see you, neither of you are in a position to complain about the other.
In that situation, it's just "one of those things".

I'm sure we're all well aware that there are times when we have the "right of way" but still have to take action to avoid a collision.
Doesn't seem like the sort of thing that should provoke rage-suicide when it happens.

Kinda scary to think that such a person might be driving a real car, on real roads, someday.
Probably the sort of person who'd rather have a crash and insist it wasn't their fault instead of avoiding the crash altogether.

There should really be a kind of tractor beam situation where all control is taken from you. While the whole docking thing is entertaining in itself, it would be a serious security hazard in real life...

I like the ones in small ships who try to zoom into the slot at full throttle whilst I'm moving out in my Cutter, although they make a real mess of the windscreen.
