Worried about 3.0 season/expansion

Sandy made it clear space legs are not coming any time soon. Unlikely they are even working on it now, except possibly for some concepts. I don't expect space legs in season 3, 4, and probably not 5. Its a back-burner thing they would like to consider eventually, but it is a major game-within-a-game change that is probably beyond their capabilities.

Sandy's statements were the clearest I've heard from FD on this, and it certainly dashed my hopes.

I think this is spot on it being beyond their capabilities atm. I think this will be the case with atmospheric worlds as well going by their attempts to introduce geysers on airless worlds.....that was one thing I was really looking forward to and it turned out to be a bit of a damp squib. So if its not space legs or atmospheric worlds for season 3 then I can't really think of anything decent they could add......Gas giants maybe? Who knows? I'm not sure how it could be just Aliens......I mean how could you explain away the fact that people without the expansion wouldn't be able to interact with them?

As it stands (pun not intended), space legs would be pointless. Getting out of your ship would allow you to walk around planet surfaces - and then what? There's nothing you'd be able to do on foot that you can't already do in the SRV.

I don`t really care, after all planet landing was quite pointless too, it still lack a LOT. So just bring space legs, and worry about content later, it is not like that it be a first time when FD doing so.

Look how many people complained about planetary landings, though. Frontier probably want to avoid huge backlash again.

Anyone able to link to the time stamp where Sandy talks about this? Is very much like to hear what he had to say...

Agree in principle.....but how long do we wait for content? Till season 4 or 5? We are still waiting for content for planetary landings, Wings and Powerplay. This seems to be a common thread with FD.....add something and then totally forget about developing any content for it. Its like....we've done that now lets move on to the next gimmick.

Yeah I really want space legs to be part of season 3. People argue it's a massive task, but I just want to walk on a planet, have a basic gun or exploration tool and I'm good. Add a basic framework for space legs at least.

The major feature Star Citizen has over Elite Dangerous is the freedom to walk around and be fully immersed in your character. I like ED's multicrew, but not being stuck in a chair. Multicrew makes me want to get out of my seat even more than before.

They should not delay space legs till 2018. I will play Star Citizen for the sole reason of having space legs if it doesn't come to ED in 2017.

Same, Frontier needs to realize that many people want SPACE LEGS sooner (season 3) rather than later. If we don't get it, we will go somewhere else for space legs.

1) dont speak for others
2) it'll come when its ready. Its daft to demand them to release something they dont have...

In my opinion, there are more chances to get some content, when we have features already in place (even limited at the moment).

This.... and that's why that other game is taking so long.

Well, if that is true, players will slowly migrate to other games as they will offer it, that is just how it will be. I still believe we will see it in a very near future give or take 12 month.

I'm worried about the future as well. The biggest worry for me is that, from what Sandy was saying, it seemed like they are not currently planning to expand mult-crew at all. He answered the question by saying "Well...lets just see how multicrew does first." Not a great answer imho. :/

I am still of the view that they'll release thin atmosphere (less than 0.5 atmospheres) planets before we see proper atmospheric landings. As for Space Legs, I still say we'll see this added incrementally as well. With movement about the ship being the most obvious "next step". After all, previous videos have had the devs telling us that our whole ships are already modeled, and exist within the game. With full body avatars as of 2.3, it wouldn't take too much more for them to give us the ability for our avatars to leave their chairs & even leave the cockpits.

Also, as loathe as I am to agree with ShimEnki (who I have disagreed with on many occasions, about a good many things ;) ), I'd have no objection to them spending a season added no *new* content, but merely focusing on adding more depth to-and connectivity between-existing game content. Exploration, Engineers, Power Play, Multi-crew, Missions, Military Careers-all could benefit from a full season of adding extra layers of depth and inter-relatedness.

This response from so other players I've talked to really has surprised me over the last year. I suppose it's a matter of perspective, but IMO the 2.0 launch with planet landings was the most fantastic part of season 2 thus far. I did a CMDR reset and used my SRV to earn up from a Sidewinder doing surface salvage missions and loved every minute. I still carry an SRV in my daily runabout Cobra, my exploration Keelback, and my Beluga for scanning surface tourist beacons.

And yet several times I hear another player say something like "I've never touched those SRVs or even landed on a planet. Nothing to do down there, no money, waste of time." when I bring up the subject. Or hear a few say that they didn't buy Horizons because they don't care about planets. It just blows me away to think such a massive and massively impressive aspect of the Elite universe could be so meaningless for these players. But again, I re-began my career down there. So maybe that gameplay is just something far closer to me, in part due to that.

yeah, it looks like they are hitting the development wall with 200 M/h

That also explains the kind of bolt on expansions we have seen lately. However on the other hand a long way out in the future could be 12 month away, we simply don't know.
Star Citizen is also far far way from even hitting Beta so it could be that a 3rd game could raise and take the lead at some point.

Hellion are in Alpha but moving on rapidly, the problem is that if players start to move for whatever reason, they will not buy items in the store, they will not be playing the game and will concentrate on the game they are playing now. If whatever they are playing is good, they will stay there and that will take away playtime from the competition.

In the end it's all a business, and PSX/XBONE can't save the revenue endlessly. It will only buy you time for a moment.

The Horizons season isn't entirely about SRVs either. So space legs will have a lot of other stuff too.

Star Citizen was designed from the beginning so that players can seamlessly walk inside and out of their ships. In ED the game will be adapted to accommodate it. They could modify the SRV tech by replacing SRVs with animated player models and we'd have space legs on planets.

Star Citizen also doesn't have a fully functional galaxy and you have to pay real money for your ships.

Although Season 2 has been significantly longer than Season 1 (by about 4 months, so far) the sheer amount of extra stuff we have gotten this season, compared to the season 1, has made the wait very much worth it. Engineers, major & ongoing Mission System overhauls (including, but not limited to, better branching missions and now chained missions, as well as missions you can increasingly get away from the mission board), passenger contracts, ship-launched fighters, NPC crew (albeit currently limited to the SLF), Planetary Landings, Avatar Creation, Multi-Crew.....and those are just the ones that come most easily to my mind. I think people do too easily forget what has been achieved this season-maybe because nobody can remember just how "bare-bones" Season 1 really was ;).

I call it "managing expectations", to be honest. Remember how, in January 2016, they gave us what turned out to be a wildly optimistic appraisal of the release dates for the season 2 updates? Then remember the massive outburst from the community when those release dates weren't even close to being met? I don't blame them for not wanting to repeat that experience-hence why they're trying to keep any "promises" extremely low key.

At the end of the day, though, that is merely my theory-as only FDev themselves know what they can and cannot achieve in the space of the next 6-12 months.
