I think you can still name your ship for free and others will see it in the contacts list etc. ? It just won't be printed on the side of the ship

The main point of printing the name on the side of your ship is so you can see the name printed on the side of your ship. The vanity of this vanity plate is beyond ironic. Players are upset because they may have to pay for wasting the coder's time, just so they can read the name of their "make believe" ship... on the side of their own "make believe" ships.
Truth be told 98% of the commanders will never see the name plate on the side of your ship because 99% of the time no one will ever be close enough to read your vanity plate. You will have to stage a name plate reading party in your "Private Group" so someone that doesn't really care what you named your ship, but wants you to see what they named their ship, can see your ships name on the side of your "make believe" ship.
Most commanders, that only care about their ships name, will see your "make believe" ship's name in contacts or the HUD.
TLDR: Vanity plates cost extra because you are vain.

I hope to be wrong, but on this crappy tiny notebook, the stickers don't even seem to be actually applied on the hull. I dunno, something's off. No thanks.

I was sort of hoping for actual nose art, like on airplanes. Would look cool in screenshots

I suggest you take your crystal ball back for a refund as clearly it's not working, you have no idea how much money I have spent or not in ED or WT for that matter so hurry go dig out that receipt!
If you took a minute to understand my post rather than go on the offensive, like a good little enabler, in your defense of poor poor FD you might see that some of us would like to support ED through some decent purchases. However they need to actually make something worth buying and so far what's in there is not worth it as it's so very very basic.

Its only for the plate. Your ship name shows in in-game on menus etc. for free I believe.

Well I am fine with them doing this.
But I think they are overpriced.
But what annoys me a touch is that when you look at the early skins, they were actually good :
Prices went up, quality went down.

You see, those should be the premium skins available in the store, with basic skins available for free or even some locked behind achievements (more gameplay woohoo) like in many other games.
Thing is that we dont really get it afaik. I dont mind cosmetics in the store at a, but the idea that other people cant receive your name unless you buy a vanity plate isworrying. It really is the equivalent of not seeing cmdr names unless he/she bought a dogtag...
