Self Sufficiency in the Galaxy

I'm having to consider going back to Colonia for repairs after I lost 40% of my hull executing a fancy flip over and around some fumaroles.
Needless to say, I fudged it up and slapped the deck hard, despite having shields up.

Having to return to a station for hull repairs is a royal PITA.
Now, I've heard there is a possibility of hull repair limpets in the future, but why not just add hull repairs to the AFMU? It doesn't need another mechanic/consumable where one already exists.

Also, what do our CMDRs eat and drink out in the black?
If I can keep my ship out of stars and not pancake on planets, wouldn't I eventually starve to death?
Having to scour the planets for protein slime ingredients would add some survival vibes to the experience.

Side thrusters are a lot weaker than the regular propulsion thrusters, keep it in mind for next time.

As for the rest, don't ask too many questions about logic. ;)

There are no supply mechanics in the game, and some commanders have been out for over a year. IIRC hull repair limpets were listed as a "maybe, but probably not" idea, but like you noted, if Frontier decides to do them, they shouldn't be hard to implement.

Our CMDRs only eat hydrogen fuel. You see, as the upcoming 2.3 update illustrates, the thing sitting in the cockpit chair is just a hologram. We Commanders are the ships.

Water and Air can be continuously recycled. It's just a matter of energy which we appear to have plenty of.
The ships are all big enough to carry years worth of food for one person without impacting cargo or weight significantly.

Waste could theoretically be recycled back into food using energy. It's all Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen.
The ships aren't big enough for a full self sufficient biosphere so in the absence of replicator technology, recycled food would probably be some kind of synthetic protein and carbohydrate sludge.

I prefer to think there are high density food packs stored on board in the same place all of that iron and germanium is stored.

That escape pod surely is cramped, isn't it? No wonder there's no room for my AI pilot ...

60% is still fancy. :)

I covered 100kly after a crash that left me with 21% hull only. Take care and you'll be just fine. The thing is, that at low hull %, minor incidents such as drop-outs at stars have limited effect on the hull for some reason.
In any case, a careful 60% hull commander with a lesson learned has a much bigger chance of returning in one piece than a 100% hull commander that risks more. :)

I know I'm being ultra-careful by heading back but it was quite a knock after going from Colonia to SagA and halfway back again and still having 98% hull before my rush of cockiness.
You're right about the lesson learned though. No more Fancy Dan, rash, red-rated manoeuvres until I've docked.

I have the equivalent of a Michelin-Starred galley on my Type-6 and enough fresh food (freezers) for another two years and after that...well it's freeze-dried all the way back home.

Eating very well

I always assumed our ships would carry a nourishment synthesis system with them, much like matter synthesis but using water and proteins to 3D-print foodstuff. After all, you also get a commodity called food cartridges and I think for a single pilot these would not take up much space.

And the hologram stuff... What exactly are you talking about?

Well in my lightweight AspX i used to store gut-packings and mystery meat, dry aged for years but i have met Xcondas with cattle farms and fish ponds on board.

Edit: ... and wineyards.

Not you but there. Don't know what it's supposed to mean.
It's a conspiracy theory / joke. Mostly about how our bodies are glued to the chair, require no food nor drink, and now the whole physical appearance can be changed instantly. The Commander is the ship, not the being in the cockpit chair.
