The Extrasolar Planets Thread

I did run a few searches on various related terms to see if I could find anything already in existence for this, but drew blanks - mods, if you feel that this should be closed/merged feel free!

I thought it worthwhile to have one place where we could all post new information and news related to planets/other planetary objects found in other star systems - in the real world. I know DBOBE has already stated that the final galaxy in E: D will be modified to reflect new information, but it'd be worthwhile for the community to have somewhere that we can easily look for places to go explore.

Posting the info with a source would of course be useful!

So without further ado, a couple of bits I've spotted:

Super-Earth relatively close to Sol:

A team led by Australian astronomers has discovered a huge planet relatively close to Earth that resides in the so-called Goldilocks zone, where conditions are right for liquid water to exist on the surface.

GJ 832 c has a mass about five times that of Earth and orbits a red dwarf star every 16 days. The newly discovered planet is about five times closer to its star than the Earth is to the Sun, but the dim red dwarf has solar output 20 times lower than in this solar system, so the amount of energy the planet receives is about the same.

"It's very close, right in our solar backyard as it were," Professor Chris Tinney from the University of New South Wales' Exoplanetary Science research group told The Register. "But it is in the habitable zone."

Red supergiant replaced its core with a neutron star
A type of object first predicted 40 years ago has been found.

In the mid-1970s, theoretical astrophysicist Kip Thorne, working with collaborator Anna Zytkow, postulated the existence of a bizarre form of star. Now known as Thorne-Zytkow objects (TZOs), these bodies were the product of the merger of two separate stars: one a giant star, the second a neutron star. They were able to calculate several likely properties of these stars, making predictions for what they might look like. But in the intervening years, none have been discovered.

Anna Zytkow, however, did not give up the search. And now, 40 years later, she may have spotted one. She and three collaborators (Phil Massey, Nidia Morrell, and Emily Levesque) have reported what may be the first observational evidence that TZOs exist.

An interesting and very different stellar body, I can definitely picture one of these in game - possibly even as an explorer mission or a cash bonus for finding one?

Diamond Planets

I would love to be able to visit the theorised "Diamond Planets" in game.

Like PSR_J1719-1438_b

Planets theroectially comprosed of pure carbon in various states. I can only imagine how the FD artists would envisage such a planet in game. The views would be spectacular :)

This is a site maintained by Nasa's Jet Propulsion labratory. Has a nice searchable interface and everything.

I like the spinning young gas giant, β Pictoris b!

Earth, at the equator, spins about 1,675 kph/1,040 mph, or 465 m/s.

This one spins about 100,000 kph/62,137 mph, or 1157 m/s!

Why in such a hurry? :p

Earth used to spin a lot faster in it's younger days, about 4 times as fast as now. That's almost 2000 m/s at the equator. And we would still be spinning that fast now if it wasn't for the moon and tidal forces.

Yup, the days are indeed getting longer... :( ;)

Space, the fascinating frontier. :D
