Why I don't want to live in Colonia

I just spent a couple of weeks around Colonia and while it's a fine place to visit, I don't want to live there as my negatives outweigh the positives. Here's how I see it:

Positives
Outfitting is good for mining and most systems will have pristine reserves
It is close to many undiscovered systems so being the first to explore some isn't hard
The RES' near Jaques are very close by and at Jaques you can cash in inter-system bounties

Neutral
There is no extra benefit in mining compared to doing it in the bubble

Negatives
Buying ships and modules there is incredibly limited
A lot of systems around Colonia have outposts so you need a medium sized ship to do most trading
The different kinds of Res Extraction Sites are limited
The cost of transferring ships is very high and most of the time not worth it
No powerplay systems (could be seen as a positive)
No engineers (also could be seen as a positive)

There are probably other things but this is what I came up with off the top of my head. I was considering moving there but now that I've visited I don't think I will for now.

Positive

The view, The sky box is amazing. I expect it gets to be normal after a while but I was there for about 5 days and every time I logged in it was what had the largest impact.

The Commanders, I think it is a friendlier more tight community, that may change in the next while but I have still seen posts with commanders commenting on it.

They have since reduced the cost of transfers by about half since I was there and to ship my Python was over 300M if I remember, so You can probably still figure out shipping is going to be way more than the cost of the ship.

A couple more larger space ports with more ship selection and I could easily be talked into locating there.

Maybe Frontier should kickstart Colonia a little with more stations in nearby systems. Also expansion to remote colonies requires support from systems in the bubble to ship supplies and equipment. That's an opportunity for multi-million credit cargo missions to and from Colonia. Now we're talkin'...

Yep, just better ship and module selection would make it more of a draw card. Although it would be great if Colonia offered more that the bubble doesn't... like much greater concentrations of rare materials, for example.

Agree. There should be something to make it worth visiting. Currently there is nothing.
For example a special engineer or special module sold only here - or at least a special station with unique interior.
A big unique alien crash side would also be nice.

FD should have let Colonia be and develop on it's own. Then only those who actually want to be there instead of being lured there would make up the inhabitants.

Hoping Colonia's development is very player driven, so we may see

-GC for improving station (all then nice modules)

- Continuing CG for groups (that's a given) that may be able to grow there system into a multi station system (all the big pads)

- An important area later in the game, as more of the galaxy is opens up (all the locked areas on the far side of the galaxy)

At the moment, with the lack of services, and high ship transfer cost, only the most dedicated are out there... This give them a chance to stamp there names all over the local area, before it become more attractive.

I my slef have had to make the 22K trip a few time becuse there are not the facilities at Colonia (bathroom brakes are long). Such as getting an a 6a power plant for my T9, as i had shipped it over with a 5a :(

i now want a good interdiction, so will be making the trip back to the bubble again, just for that... Not seeing it as an issue, but an advantage for people willing to do it (all them stories)

Realy feels like i'm toughing it out, out at Colonia.

Personally, I'm disappointed in the lack of NPC factions in the new bubble. Each system had one "Colonia ~" cooperative faction (which were adopted by the BGS players of the CCN), and one native anarchic faction. Even that was too few. Now, with the Colonia Expansion Appeals in full swing, the new systems outnumber the old, but they all came just with player minor factions. So, basically the new bubble is a crowded place where player factions have a hard time not stepping on each others toes (assuming they don't want to), and next to no NPC minor factions to act as buffers.
I was hoping for 2.3 to expand the NPCs in the sector, but that turned out to not be the case. But at least the tech will be there now to have new stations / megaships show up without having to do a client patch, so there is the possibility that FD will use player activity (CG-s) to make this happen, as opposed to having them just poof into existence during a major patch.

Yes, I know the new bubble isn't the same as the old bubble, but in this aspect I'd rather it was.

Mind you, it's still an interesting place to visit and spend some time at, and a very useful base of operations for exploring the Core and beyond, but the lack of infrastructure does make it difficult to settle there permanently.

I agree 100%...but...well I still call jacques my home, even though I refer to it as jacques and not colonia. Maybe in a few years, if Im still here, I can get my own little station and call it bob marley station. That means working with the bgs...the very thing I came out here to avoid...hindsight is a wonderful thing.

In reality, its a way more convenient parking lot fer a couple of ships and thats it...convenience. It does the job well enough ^

Maybe one of the upcoming deep space asteroid bases would fit the ticket better then? There's a list of their locations here, although I only know that Station X near the Crab nebula only has two NPC factions. With no neighbouring systems around, working the BGS would be quite pointless.

Hmm, the frontier doesn't offer the services of civilization? Who'd have guessed? :p

I've been out to Colonia, and I came back, too. I'm not a hardy enough explorer to make it out there, I guess. I missed the bubble.

But man...the sky! The views!

I'll be back.

Last time I was there I wanted to buy a 32T fuel tank. Not possible. Not even a 16T on offer. In the end I purchased two T6s, stripped out their 16T tanks, fitted them to my ship & sold the T6s. I'm sure it makes sense to someone :D

+1 for thinking outside the box

If you put a core module in storage, the game will automatically replace it with the default module for that slot. Whether the station has them or not. So you may have been able to save yourself the 10% hit on the second T6
If your ship originally came with a 32T tank, you could have saved yourself the 10% on the first T6 too.

If would be good if there were missions to transport ship modules/components and parts of ships so they could be manufactured out there. At least get a steady stream of ships transporting good and components that are required for life out there.

Didn't think of that! Mind you if I had I might still have thought it a bit too close to an exploit and credits haven't been an issue for me for a very long time.
