PAX Livestream was it running on Standard PS4 or PS4 Pro

Seriously?

Whilst waiting for a game release that does have an announced release timetable (although broad) you are now arguing about who controls the company because that will/might/may have a bearing on when the game gets released?

On a discussion forum, whilst discussing the upcoming release of the game to a new platform, we were discussing when it would be released. The FAQ, released some months ago, included two bits of information - price - £39.99 and release date - Q2 2017.

Since then, there was very little concrete information to manage the expectations of a number of people who were looking forward to the PS4 console release. We have also had two subsequent PS4 console launches beyond the original launch model - the PS4Slim and the PS4Pro

At PAX, we finally got to see a bit of PS4 gameplay.

We now know that HOTAS will be supported (previously not confirmed on the FAQ) and the game will be launched before 2.4

What was flagged about the coverage was:
a) It was not clear if the footage shown on a standard PS4(base or slim) or PS4Pro?
- The 'Q2 2017' launch date was verbally replaced by 'this year'

Hence the discussion as the implications.

- Would you prefer an imminent launch, with potentially a few bugs
or
- Would you prefer a deferred launch, with bugs removed.

I think that it is a legitimate discussion point, on a discussion forum, and I would guess that different people have different preferences.
It would be naïve to not think that it is a question that hasn't come up within Frontier.

from what i have watched of interviews, youtube vids, and live streams frontier dosnt want to release a game with bugs and try their best to eliminate them. they admit some slip by accidentally and they work hard to get them patched up asap. Though I want to play ED as soon as possible on ps4 (like some of you I stalk the forums & streams waiting for news.) I respect frontier for trying to release the game only when they believe its ironed out and ready. I wish more company's took this approach to often in these past few year are we a sold sub-pare product by AAA company and have to wait for a fix or half measure. I know the ps4 release will have its bugs when it releases and our job will be to report them to frontier, but if we look at the history of ED and the people who work to make the dream happen they want to give use the best product they can as soon as they can. so keep faith CMDR's we will fly among the stars soon.

My thinking is still that it will be released once they have finalized the Beta of the current version - so we just wait and see how many iterations that takes.

I noticed in one of obsidian ant's latest YouTube vids on the pax showing of ps4 elite, that he said we didn't know if running on Pro or not.
The use of the new controller during the stream is either a big clue, or one big red herring. Naughty boy Ed :)

Not 100% as the PS4 Slim has the DS4 v2 also. :) (Maybe they broke their controller and bought a new one?) :)

I had it "unofficially" from a guy who claimed to be at PAX (Not FDev) who saw the Frontier stand that it was a PS4 OG. I don't know how true this is. I hope it is, but without official confirmation we just do not know.

If it was an PS4 OG its even more weird that they were using a DS4 v2.

Unfortunately, all PS4 controllers are compatible with all versions of PS4 so the fact that it was a new controller doesn't confirm anything.

I would guess that we would have been seeing the footage on a DevKit box, or possibly a PS4Pro. There is very little likelihood that it would be a original PS4 or PS4slim. There is no reason to downgrade to the slightly less powerful console and then not make a point of Elite running on all models.

There is still time to optimise the code so a viable E: D on a base PS4 is not to be ruled out for launch but I would expect early code demonstration to use the most powerful box available.

Didn't Ubisoft get into trouble a couple of years ago about the footage shown of WatchDogs1 claiming to be PS4 but was actually a PC emulation of what should be possible?

Yes, this also happened with The Division. Also it was probably a PS4 Devkit like Snowymonk said. Sony sometimes gives the kits out for free to Indie Developers which is what FDev is...

I don't really agree with that, IMO there is more reason for FDev to use a standard PS4 as that's what most PS4 owners have. I am not sure how many Pro's are out there, but its nowhere near 50m. Why run on a system not representative for most owners and potentially disappoint others? This is what does worry me, as if I get Elite and it runs like a dog compared to what they showed I wont be happy. :)

I do worry though. My first thought was it was definitely PS4 Pro hardware but when Sandy seemed a bit vague on what the PS4 Pro would add I am not so sure.

Plus this unofficial source who swore to me it was a standard console, maybe we will never know. I just hope the copy I get runs as well as they showed (without the SRV crash).

Stormy, you missed my point.
Developers will initially code on a really big, powerful box to get the base code working. They will then look at how the code runs and optimise it to get it into the various budget envelopes within the console (GPU, CPU, Screen resolution, Refresh rate etc). The DevKit will allow FDev more leeway in terms of code optimisation, PS4Pro would be the next milestone as it is more powerful than the final console variant, the original PS4 & PS4Slim.

As it was only one PS4 demonstration, there was no confirmation of how far down this optimisation the game was.
A smart marketing session would add the model of the PS4 used to the list of things that Ed was not to mention if it was DevKit to avoid any risk of negative publicity, and add it to the list of 'must mentions' if it was standard PS4 or PS4slim as it would only be positive news.
PS4Pro is in the middle ground at the moment as it is a good bit of kit but as you have said, does not have the same market penetration as the standard model.
I would therefore guess that it was DevKit, but only by the fact that with everything that they did reveal, the model used was not one of them.

Yeh, totally with you mate. They did call it a "PS4 build" also which made me nervous but if it wasn't ready to be shown on a PS4 then I don't think it should have been shown personally. If this ends up not being representative that will be a massive PR negative blow. Maybe this is why it was not really widely publicised at all outside of FDev to the wider PS media community.

To counter that the person who was my unofficial source did however claim no press had been given a demo and it was absolutely was running on a PS4 OG. They were adamant. I tended to believe them (After I figured out who they worked for and what their role probably was at PAX. I am making assumptions of course never a good thing :)). They could have course just been pulling my leg. At the time I quizzed them, are you sure its running on a PS4? They were adamant it was and it wasn't Slim or Pro but OG. I don't believe the Devkit even looks like a PS4 so if correct that rules out DevKit.

However, if it was running on a PS4 OG I'd have thought that FDev would be shouting it from the rooftops. So I am sceptical.

Your story is also totally plausible. I hope mine is the correct one. LOL

You are correct that PS4 Dev Kits look nothing like the Retail Kits.

It was a PS4 Build running on a PS4 Test Kit, which is as close hardware wise as you can get to a Retail PS4 and still run games which are in development.

Wow, thanks for the input. As Snowymonk says, really good news.

Cheers Gary. Give Ed a little slap for using the new controller for me ;)

Not that I care whether was Pro or not, I'm still buying it just for VR... Gary?... Where's he gone?
