Rare photos of Frontier's HUD design team.

Was digging through the Beta files and I found these while editing my HUD!

Things are starting to make sense now.

Ok Ok I do have to use this opportunity to once again beg for customizable HUDs on behalf of Console players. I don't understand how they do it. I really don't. PC players we already have that luxury to some degree, 30 seconds in the files and you are good to go for another year. This has been one of the first complaints ever made against this game and here we are years later. I am serious when I ask this. How hard can it be? It seems to me they just need to isolate the elements such as NPC faces from being affected by the changes. I don't see the roadblocks. I really don't.

I don't play on console, and am one of those weirdos that actually likes the orange HUD.

That being said, I agree that custom HUD colors should be implemented.
I'll use the latest Sandy response: "yes, it's something we'd like to do but no eta's, no guarantees, limited resources, etc." :p

They had to pick a colour. At least the orange is realistic and different from what most games do.

I mean, I eventually changed my HUD colour as well. But if I were a console player or Frontier broke custom colours in an update I wouldn't enjoy the game any less.

Customizable HUDs? Hmmm. Can it be monetised? That's the question...

Well.... yup. I mean, let's face it, this is what's going to happen.

Also I like the standard oragen hud, never changed it. Would do if the game properly supported it, the hacky method changes other colours I dont want to change.

I'm sure someone versed in programming/game development could explain why changing the HUD is so tough? It seems like an insanely easy win for FD.

I mean 'sorry guys, no HUD colour changes but here are some new ships and you can now land on airless moons because that was MUCH easier to do'.

Surely the Xmas temp could fire this out in a day? Please explain it to a prole like me, honest question.

I would pay for new HUD colours (on Xbox so I don't have the Purple NPC option).

It's to do with how frontier have designed the whole HUD and menu initially, they are all linked the same RGB. So if you changhe your HUD colours it then becomes more difficult to ID enemies compared to freinds on your scanners and the faces of mission givers become jaundiced or beetroot looking. Frontier would have to reprogram the whole thing pretty much from scratch. Something that isn't on their priority list considering the bug list they have got to work through.

I understand how people would want this but I prefer the orange myself. I changed it once and tried out several schemes. I came back to orange as the warming glow out in the cold black feels homely to me.

I like the orange also but I am certainly not against a "customizable HUD" option - if the scanner wouldn't be borked.
Might be cool to have a blue variation for explorer ships.

Well, orange is the (default) BMW instrument panel lighting, and there went a lot of thought into the ED instrument panel overall (that doesn't necessarily mean that I agree with all of it, and I'm using a white HUD scheme myself), so I wouldn't consider the ED HUD to be so bad as to need rework/replacement.

Taking the 20th century automotive analogy a little bit further, though: what I'd like to see would be different HUDs (and HUD colours) for the different ship manufacturers. The main instruments/indicators should still be there, of course, but maybe with a different placement and definitely different colours. So maybe the fed coffins could have a switch to convert from white (daytime ops) to deep red (nighttime ops), Imperials would have pastel clours and so on...

Yes I'd agree with that. The imperial ships need a blue one I think as the orange seems to jar against the usual blue highlighing.

I would also like to see different styles of display as I can't believe every ship manufacturer would have the same interface. Car instruments are the same functionally but look wildly different from one manufacturer to the next.

I've been using a light blue one for a while. The 'interstellar' preset in EDFX. It was a welcome change and it doesn't interfere with the pictures of avatars. The radar does show different colors for enemies but that's something one can get used to when using another color for a while.
