I'm somewhat amazed when I select the Mission Board to find the richest and most powerful factions in some rich and powerful solar systems with their little tin cups out, begging for donations.

Alms for the poor. Right. It's laughable. They're a lot richer than I am. When I get my own solar system, I'll start begging, too. In the meantime...

I've read that donating will raise your standing with the receiving local faction, but I have some questions:
1. Do donations to the local factions improve your reputation with the galactic faction(s) they are aligned with?
2. Does the size of a donation matter? If so, what effect does a sizable donation have compared to a small donation?
3. Does the frequency of donations matter?
4. Does not donating at all matter?
5. Have I failed to ask an important question about donations? If so, please enlighten me.

1. Yes. It's just like any other mission as far as that goes.
2. Larger donations give you more naval rank gain (with severe diminishing returns). I presume they also give you more reputation gain, but it is only a presumption.
3. Only in the sense that you're completing more or fewer missions.
4. Nope. Just like declining any other mission. Unless you accept the donation mission and then don't donate, which would be like failing or abandoning any other mission.

Donation missions are actually really useful when you come to a new system and want to start making friends with the locals. A couple of small donations are basically free and let you go straight to cordial for better regular missions.

For the sake of believability I tend to think of them less as donations to the faction and more as "donations" to the faction leaders.

I run with this too, politicians asking for money from people to help their cause.

Last night I took on 3 donation collections.
Then, as I was settling on the pad, the so and so's told me to take 2 of them elsewhere. I abandoned those 2.

I have found that when you abandon any mission for any reason, it hurts your reputation with the faction that you accepted it from.
