1000th ELW

Awesome stuff CMDR +1

Only 977 till I catch you up, so please don't find any more for a while [where is it]

What's the secret to finding ELWs? I'm very much a noob explorer and I'm 20KLy into my first trip to Sag A and I haven't found a single ELW. I keep seeing planets that look similar on the system map but when I get there they are always water worlds or metal rich. Lost count of neutron stars and black holes I've found.

I'm going to break down and write a guide on finding them once I have finished my little survey mission in the ZUNOU sector. However, the short answer, know an ELW on sight, and verify with the bird sounds they make before bothering to even go scan. The time spent in SC going to scan what turns out to be a WW or HMC, could have been used more effectively jumping to another 2 (or 20 depending on distance in SC) systems. VOLUME...the more systems you visit, the better your odds. If you only visit 20-30 systems a day..even visiting prime candidate systems...you can expect only 1 ELW every other day. They come in groups...if you find one...odds are more in your favor to search the surrounding area to find several more. When traveling...filter for only F class stars...Although A8's and A9's have a higher rate of ELWs...you have too many "junk" A class stars that will bring your hit rate down...

Thanks, good tips, repped. I have been travelling via selecting scoopable KGB-FOAM route filter and didn't realise I should improve the stats by selecting only F stars. Completely agree about wasted time chasing WWs, but they often look so like ELWs on system map with clouds and poles etc.

The one thing I don't get is the sounds. How do you hear the sound a planet makes? The only guess I could make was hovering my mouse over each planet in the system map, but they all sounded the same to me whether icy, rocky or ww... a sort of faint whooshing.

On the main menu, under options/sound....In the "music" category, I have everything off, except for stellar cartography music. In the system map, when you clik on the suspected ELW, and leave your cursor over the planet icon..after just a few seconds, you should hear what sounds like birds singing...water worlds have a distinctive water gurgling sound...

*edit* Also...if you are near the core and don't mind manually plotting each jump, I would choose A8, A9, and F0-F4's to maximize hit rate...filtered routes in the core take forever still, and you may actually save a bit of time doing it manually anyhow.

Here is a screenshot of my 3rd one for today. The ELW is the first planet, and the second is a real close looking WW. You can make out the greenish land masses fairly well. This also depends on what type of star it orbits, the land masses can have varying hues from red-ish through to greens...and when they have an A class star...they seem almost golden colored...well to me anyhow...
