VR and trading...a request to FD

Hi there,
I really enjoy playing E:D in VR. Exploring is great (when you get used to the new galaxy map handling ;)) and fighting...it makes me stunning when I do my firts dogfight with my occulus. But now, I want to go back to my roots beeing a merchant.
I had to figure out, that all the great 3rd Party tools/overlays actually doesn't work with VR. What is pretty reasonable, when I think about it, because they are overlays...I can understand and I really appreciate why FD has provided an API for 3rd party tools and give the community the oppurtunity to develop the stuff they Need.

BUT

than FD has to provide a method to implement these 3 rd party tools into the game that it can be used for VR gaming!!

AND

if FD don't want or can't open their game in that way for thess 3rd party tools, why does FD doesn't create it's own realy usefull trading computer? One that could be used to set upmulti system routes? An virtual in game keyboard for the galaxy map and chat?

cheers

It isn't a frontier thing, its most likely the fact that hmd's are not recognized as displays.
So any overlay would need to be injected into the runtime drivers directly.

Not impossible , but performance costly and likely to cause problems.

And even if it does work, you quickly realize we just don't have the resolution to easily read and use web sites from inside vr. There is a few such window injectors out for steamvr and one for rift, but mileage may vary.

Personally I find elite to now be utterly unplayable outside of vr, talk about a first world problem, so if i do trade, i simply find an A-B-A route.
Bookmark each station and just repeat between them until I see profits dropping.

Also its a bit fun, being just old enough to remember what having to actually memorize phone numbers etc was like. To fully embrace the fact that I am JUST playing the game and not multitasking a million things at the same time.

Then again I haven't really been too focused on money making the last year, I already had all the three big ships and just hovering about 3 bil in assets ;)

I also do the A-B-A and CG, what is pretty much the same thing ;)...but I grind my Cutter and want to start trading again across the human bubble...this is a different story...
But thanks for the hint with the bookmarks...it is so easy that I even don't think about it [big grin]

Cheers

Also, just mentioning.

I rename my bookmarks often to something like : "2.1 buy silver " and "2.2 buy slaves".
Cause I sometimes need a reminder...

FD doesn't implement tools like this because;

a) Good trading tools would expose the relative simplicity of the commodities 'simulation'.
b) Elite has always focused on obfuscation of the pilot CMDR as a mechanism to increase workload in the game (to overcome the apparent simplicity) ie not logging prices per station, per system, very simplified market screens etc
c) Good tools would make the trading game too easy without complex modelling of real-life market variables adding uncertainty and risk to what would become otherwise dead-certain massive profits once CMDRs reached a reasonable starting point / seed capital.

In a realistic ED universe, you'd be able to buy trade data, set up long term contracts (that would generate missions for you to fulfil), make short-term gains based on local variation, tip-offs and trends revealed by decent graphing, natural and political events etc.

ED's market system isn't complex... at least not compared to the real world (and we're just one planet, not thousands of planetary-scale economies).

how about you try the following tool:

OpenVR Desktop Display Portal

its a free open source utility used to inject any windowed application into your virtual work. It works really well with the apps I have tried so far on my Vive and will work with your trading apps too
