Can we turn off seeing Commander Ship Names..?

Will we be able to filter seeing Commander Ship Names..?

With so much talk, and furore, about ship naming and the name plates that provide Commanders a way to display that currently favoured name for them; i'v yet to read, or hear, anything about Commanders being able to 'turn off' the ability to see, player created, ship names altogether.

While most players will no doubt be creative, witty, and sensible about their ship naming, there will be those who bend and twist that naming filter to the extent of it's limit, creating puerile rubbish, and playground innuendo.

My issue here is not 1 of immersion, or name policing.. different tropes for different folks! it is simply that, as a grown man of (n)Years, with children, i'm not really overjoyed at the idea of seeing the infantile creations of some, jumping up on my screen, while i am playing the game.

i think adding a Commander to an ignore list, over a ship name, is really pretty overkill.. i'd much rather we have an option to just turn them all off.. in the same way we can turn of orbital lines.

has this already been covered though, and if so what has been said?

and if this hasn't yet been covered, is it worth doing so?

regards

I am a spin bowler.

The Profanity Filter will be my wicket.

or something - actually I'm as bad at ball sports as I am at PvP.
But I do have an infraction for masked swearing for the name of my clipper.

I'd have no problem with this, if that's what you want, but given the ty puerility of some of the npc names that presumably the devs are responsible for... well I think you may be stressing over nothing very much.

I'd like an "ignore" function for CMDRs.

You still get instanced with them, but you don't see any communication or ship names, etc.
If we ever got custom decals or paintjobs, etc, it can hide those too.

So there might be some ship names that you don't want to see? How do you cope in real life? People wearing T-shirts with all sorts of slogans and profanity, graffiti on walls, lyrics in songs you hear on the radio/stream, TV shows with content you don't like? Do you walk around looking at the ground in case you see something that you don't want to? :D

I think you've just got to ignore them and accept that some 'iffy' names will get through.

While most players will no doubt be mature, there will be those that take offense at another man/woman's humour.

Damn, man.

So old and you still haven't grown a skin.

I don't think it's about growing a skin, I swear like a trooper in real life. The plus side I see to all of this, you will be easily able to tell the kind of cmdr you are dealing with in open from the ship name, has worked for me with Cmdr names in open.

Nothing wrong with the Op asking for an option to disable/filter displayed ship names, I would guess the devs are concerned with ship naming being abused, there are so many ways to get around any filters.

Lol, as if the ship names of npc are all so mature. Elite lore simply has a lot of 'young immature punk racers'.

You dont like a name? Well, your ship came with hardpoints for a reason...

I don't think I've seen an NPC ship name that could be considered offensive. As an old school Sim racer, I can think of plenty of team names that are blatantly racist/homophobic or just down right horrible, all done in a way that bypasses the filter.

we don't pay to interact with the world, we are a part of it, and even while engaging the outside, we are still able to choose exactly where, when and with whom we interact. once we are at home though, we live by our standards, choose what we surround ourselves with, and what games we play.

this is a game that we purchase and choose to play. for the past 2 years, naming has been a pipe dream, so this is just something i had not really considered until now.

i think it is a great addition to the game for those who want to name their ships, and add extra personal depth their game. but if people have the 'option' to purchase something that increases the value of their game, but could easily devalue the game environment.. with unwanted graffiti (thanks for the analogy) for others, what is wrong with asking for an option to filter it out and carry on 'as is'?

Then you report them. Just include their ship type and name in the message.

This is a family game, so there's no reason to put up with childish idiocy. Wish we had George Carlin's rubber stickem dart guns in game.

I hadn't really thought too much about being annoyed by ship names but I have thought about more clutter in the UI that I could do without.

Now I am confused? You are talking about disabling the free hudname, or the purchased ship plate?

But Flak, think of the children!!!

LOL!

Furore about not being able to see ship names....

and now

Furore about seeing ship names!

The adage about "pleasing all of the people some of the time" appears to have been broken - replace with "you can never please Elite Dangerous fans at any time!"

Damn, man.

So old and you still haven't grown a skin.

i'm Glaswegian and ex military.. and as with many things, there are appropriate places for certain behaviours and attitudes.. example, any man swearing or being lewd in the lounge bar at my old local, would be thrown out and barred, the bar itself though was men only and we could swear, be loud.. and fight within reason.

so this has nothing to do with the thickness of my skin, or any kind of sensitivity to swearing, it has everything to do with being a grown up, who enjoys playing this game free of nonsense you see in many others. while there is a time and a place for certain attitudes and behaviours, and no time for others, i have very little desire, to spend my free time, playing this game, if the environment within, becomes littered with what i perceive to be, immature, crude or unsavoury signage and labelling.

It's not a furore, just a simple request from the OP. Personally I wanted ship names in game so I could keep a track of my fleet, couldn't care less what anybody else names their ship - Be it the HMS Queen Mary, ship Mc'Shipface, Drunk Mc Sht/Faced or the SS Amon Göth... I would welcome the option to hide other ship names being displayed on the hud, it doesn't stop me from naming my ship.
